Although this product is Chinese made it does enjoy a higher level of quality than most non-industrial drill press vises on the market. The quality is evident in the vise's cast components and its design.

In particular the vise uses a machined round bar to guide the moveable vise-jaw, and thus keep it aligned with good precision. While this design is good for keeping the moveable jaw from "caming" when clamping parts, one should avoid heavy clamping pressures when the part is located eccentric to the guide bar "long" axis. In short, the twisting load, or eccentric moment, acting on the moveable jaw has the potential to over load the guide bar if "abusive" tightening of the vise is applied. For this reason (in my judgment) Palmgren provides a somewhat short sliding bar tee handle length -- in order to protect the vise from hand tightening over loads. In other terms, this is not a vise you should ever tighten with a cheater bar.

Notwithstanding the above comment, the acme screw and guide bar provided with the vise are rugged, and thus with sensible shop use the product should give many years of good service.

Other minor issues with the vise are that the hardened (removeable) jaws are not both cut with vertical and horizontal vee grooves. Also since the hardened jaws are of lesser thickness the depth of the vee grooves provided (only in the fixed jaw) are of near unuseable depth. This is not a big issue since adequately sized hardened prismatic jaws (used loose) can be purchased from any number of machine tool sources (Grizzly for example).

Lastly the finish of the vise's machined surfaces is adequate at a 125 Ra (my judgment) as compared to a milling vise with a 63 Ra or better machined finish. Granted, these applictions are different -- I'm just pointing out what to expect if you purchase this item.

Overall the vise has good quality and value -- definitely a strong 4 of 5 stars.

I was drilling a hole in a 3x5 plastic (Bud-type) project box. I was in a hurry and tried to push too big a drill bit through too small a pilot hole. The drill bit grabbed and ripped the box out of my hand and then into space. Fortunately, it missed my face and flew out of the garage and half way across the driveway. After that experience, I thought I had better do my drilling with something other than my (gloved) hand holding the work piece. My collection of C-clamps was really not the answer and so I shopped for a vise clamp.

I looked at various manufacturers and various price ranges. This vise from Palmgren will cost more than the 'low cost' alternatives--but is it built to last! It is heavy with twice the throat depth of the average vise clamp. The screw drive is augmented with a guide shaft for better precision and stability.

After procuring the Palmgren vise, I resumed work on my project and was able to drill the requisite holes in a (new) plastic box with ease and safety.

Very impressed. Very pleased.

Safety first fellow handymen!!! :)

I purchased this vise on the basis of positive reviews on Amazon. The vise is heavily made but the fit of important parts was poor. In particular the main screw wobbled so badly in its tapped fitting that it "cogged" catching as I ran it in using one finger so that it was necessary to stop and recenter it in order to continue. Also the moving jaw was loose on its guide bar so that it was possible to have a gap of almost 1/8 inch on one end when the other end touched the fixed jaw. I returned it and ordered the Wilton 11744 for almost the same price. It was much better in these respects and felt like a machine tool by comparison.

This vise is quality. It is well worth the price. Very heavy and the jaws are essentially dead-square. The parallelism of the base to the vise table is spot on (checked with a digital angle gauge). From now on I'm only buying Palmgren vises.

I have used Palmgren vices at work and was skeptical of the price since most are USA made industrial quality and sell for a lot more. Although it is an import, the quality is very good. All machined surfaces are ground flat and the jaws match perfectly when closed. This is a great vice for my home workshop. You can't go wrong on the price.

The drill press vise was very good quality, well machined, and heavy! Fit my drill press perfectly. The four slots along either side of the vise make for easy adjustments to fit the slots in the drill press table. The worm gear movement is smooth and uniform when mounting an item to be drilled. Very pleased with the purchase.
