4.0 out of 5 stars Great for your body, not so great for your face, May 2, 2010

This review is from: PanOxyl Bar 5% (Health and Beauty)
Studies have shown that benzoyl peroxide at the lowest concentration (2.5%) is just as effective as 5 and 10%, and the lower concentration of 2.5% is less drying. However, while there are a few good facial cleansers at low percentages (Neutrogena Clear Pore for example) of benzoyl peroxide, there are no bar soaps at the low concentration for your chest and back acne. Panoxyl 5% is a great solution, but you have to use it sparingly in the winter and dry seasons. In the summer, I use it daily, but am careful to only use it on my back and chest and nowhere else. I've only given it 4 stars because it's pretty drying (the tradeoff). I couldn't live without this stuff in the summer; use it faithfully and you'll thrilled with the results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Panoxyl 5% Works Great!, May 3, 2008
The dermatologist recommended Panoxyl 5% when my teenage son went to see her a year ago, and it works great for him. She also wrote a prescription face medicine too, but my son doesn't need to use it because using the Panoxyl every day works wonders. Panoxyl is drying, so that's why ordering the 5% is much better than the Panoxyl 10% that's sold in the stores. Even when you use Panoxyl you can still use a light moisturizer if the dryness bothers you.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only thing that worked!!!!, August 26, 2010

ceej (southern USA) - See all my reviews
I usually don't review products and I usually don't believe raving reviews, thinking that they are planted by the manufacturer. I can assure you I'm a lowly adult acne sufferer in the Southeastern US. After months and months of going to a dermatologist, paying a $40 specialist co-pay each time, and bringing home numerous samples and prescriptions of retinoid after retinoid, I was at my wit's end. I was still breaking out and my skin was raw from the uber drying and stinging creams and gels. The last straw was when my dermatologist suggested I try a testosterone pill. I was told that I absolutely could not get pregnant while on this medication due to the risks. I imagined smooth skin, but all sorts of adverse side effects including a full moustache and beard. And that's when I frantically started searching the net and came across a recommendation to try to the PanOxyl 5% bar. I went to my local Walgreen's, paid the $7 and the rest is history. Within 2 weeks my skin was completely clear. I don't use it every day now that my skin is clear because it is a little drying. Because my skin is oily it isn't overly drying, but I use it every few days for maintenance. This product is a god send, for me at least. I would HIGHLY recommend it and if it doesn't work - at least you're not out a co-pay and the cost of a prescription.

1.0 out of 5 stars Formula Changed Sometime in the Fall/Winter 2009, June 29, 2010
By
K. McGee (Beautiful Idaho, United States) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)

If you see a rave review of this soap on here that's prior to the winter of 2009, then they are talking about the old salicylic acid version of the soap and NOT the new formulation.

I never really had acne in highschool but when I got college aged, I began breaking out on my face, chest and back. I went to a prominent dermatologist and this is one of the things he recommended I use. I'm in my 40's now and until recently I used this soap every day in the shower. I hadn't had any real break outs for years and years.

A bar of this soap generally lasted me a couple of months and I'd stocked up with several bars so hadn't bought any for approximately six months. When I ran out and went to buy more, I noticed the box was different but didn't think too much of it. Within a few days of using the soap in the new box, I knew something was very wrong. My face felt hot and itchy. It looked almost sunburned and the texture was sort of rough, like nothing I'd ever had before. I still happened to have one of the boxes of the old version of the soap and noticed the formulation was a 5% salicylic acid. I compared it to the new box and noted it's now made with a 5% benzoyl peroxide solution!

I called the company and was told that they had bought the Steiffel lab company in the fall of 2009 and would no longer be making the salicylic acid version of the soap.

I did some research and found that Clinique makes a similar .5% salicylic acid version so I bought two bars of it. I don't like it quite as much as my old standby but it's still very good and my face is back to normal. Unfortunately, it costs almost twice as much per bar but it's still less expensive than many other treatments out there, it's simple to use and it works so I feel it's a worthy investment.

I also found that Aveeno has a bar using salicylic acid called "Clear Complexion Cleansing Bar". It was very inexpensive and I noticed it's available in lots of different stores where I live. I bought a bar of it but haven't tried it yet. I'll try to remember to review it as soon as I have used it for a couple of weeks or so.

My advice: SKIP this new formulation of Panoxyl bar soap! It's harsh, smelly, and doesn't control breakouts. Honestly, this benzoyl peroxide version is the absolute worst thing I've ever used on my face. I didn't even want to leave the house for a few days after using this only about 3 times.

5.0 out of 5 stars It Works, June 8, 2008
By
This review is from: PanOxyl Bar 5% - 12 pack (Health and Beauty)
This product is fabulous but it is not designed for everyone. It's an over-the-counter item but be careful in using it as it can be very drying if your skin is not oily. Do your research or talk to a dermatologist before using this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great for my daughter - whole body, December 20, 2007
My daughter suffers from some type of dermatitis (sorry, can't find the correct name now). It is worst on her upper arms, but she also has it on her back, a little on the chest, a little on the stomach area, and her thighs. The skin looks all pimply with either black dots or red "pimples", for lack of a better word. The doctor prescribed bathing the affected areas with this soap using a loofah followed by a 12% Ammonium Lactate Cream and it works great!! Within a couple of days you can see the skin beginning to clear up. Using this every day, her skin is back to "normal" in less than two weeks.
