The General Work-holding Tool for Larger Objects

The PanaVise 396 wide opening head work-holding tool is made up of two PanaVise components: the 366 wide opening vise head and the 300 standard base. The 366 vise head is 11" (279.4 mm) in length and opens up to 6" (152.4 mm) with neoprene pads attached (6-1/4" (158.8 mm) with pads off). The body of the head above the stem has a black oxide coating to reduce glare from overhead work lights. The included 1-7/8" neoprene jaw pads are reversible and removable. One side of the pads contains multiple grooves designed for flat surfaces, while the other has a wide 'V' groove to hold round objects. The PanaVise 300 standard base includes a 3-3/4" (95.2 mm) tall stand with a 4-5/16" (109.5 mm) footprint, and weighs 1.4 lb. (0.6 kg). To secure the entire unit to a work bench or an optional base mount, the 396 features a bolt circle at the bottom edge of the base, which is countersunk for three 1/4" flathead screws.

Tilt, Turn and Rotate Functionality

The PanaVise PanaVise 396 wide opening head work-holding tool utilizes PanaVise single-knob "split-ball" functionality at the point of contact between its base and vise head attachment. Once an item is secured within the head, the split-ball system allows maneuvering along three separate planes. The mobility range of the model 396's split-ball system is a 90-degree tilt to the side, along with either an angled rotation, or a level turn range of 360 degrees. This mobility range allows a user to rearrange a work item into any position, eliminating the need to adjust the overall position of the work station.

Additional Head Options

Although the PanaVise 396 work-holding tool is primarily intended for use with the included 366 wide opening vise head attachment, it is also compatible with a range of other vise head accessories. Its base works with all PanaVise 300 series vise heads, as well as the PV Jr. model 203 head, or any other tool with a 5/8" diameter shaft.

I'm using the clamp to hold a variety of different optics for testing in a lab environment. Crank action is very smooth and allows for a fine touch. The reversable neoprene pads which were included are also useful for handling a variety of shapes.

The base works very well but arrived with scratches, possibly someone elses return, which is typical of the stuff often I recieve from Amazon (grrrr)

The 396 head works well but takes forever to make large changes to jaw opening width, it needs a release device so it can be quickly adjusted.

Works well, soldering dose not melt it. Its heavy enough, as it is, in most cases. I have one of these at work, and this one, I got for my self at home...

I'm an electrical engineer and I work on, and repair electronics parts almost everyday. This is literally one the best purchases I have ever made. I threw my alligator clip helping hand in the trash a day later. I really wanted the one with the self centering head, but I bought this one because it came with a base and was almost the same price. It does get a little off balance occasionally if the head is all the way open. No problem though, I cut a piece of quarter inch steel and matched it to the bolt pattern on the bottom. The best part about this is it's modular. I will buying more heads and accessories for it very soon.

I love this thing. I don't buy many things that I don't research to death and this was no different. I researched it an felt pretty comfortable buying it. I use the Amazon reviews and other reviews I find not only online but in my traditional print journals as well. I wasn't wrong.

I received this in a well-sized box appropriate for re-purposing with the following wrapped separately inside: 1) the base; 2) the arm with mount; and 3) the rubber feet.

It was obvious how it went together and the mount slides into the base upon opening with a 3/8" nut driver. The rubber feet push on over the steel arms. The clamping action is by screw and the fine screw threads make for a lot of turning to go from full open to full close- but on the flip side, it allows very precise holding.

I also purchased the 308 weighted base for this and it fits perfectly ensuring that the vise doesn't move. The base has rubber feet too, which just really doubles down on the holding power.

This is a really good piece of bench/work desk equipment and I cannot recommend it highly enough for just about any kind of small work. I use it in electronics for my hobbies and work. Building Christmas light controllers and such is much more fun with the proper equipment!

Highly Recommended 5 Stars

This is a decent device which occasionally comes in handy. But when you receive it and look at what you get for the money, it is disappointing. I realize that it us USA made and am happy to pay a premium for that, but not double what it should cost. It is definitely NOT made of expensive metals at all. It includes no mounting screws for attaching to a bench top. And the lack of a quick - adjustment feature means you'll be spinning the tiny adjustment knob forever when switching between large and small objects.

This is a very handy tool for working on small items. I have used one like it for years with the smaller vice head. It swivels to almost any position for ease of access and clamps into place solidly. The wide opening head allows for working on bulkier objects. This is well worht the money spent.

Love the ability to turn and swivel it in any direction.
Holds securely, and it protects any object you want from scratches and unwanted bends as happens on metal jaw vises.
Also a lot more portable than a regular metal vise.
Looks sturdy enough.
