A hard carving wax proved to be a suitable medium for a model that could later be cast, and miniature tools where ground to shape. The level of detail required that the carving be done under magnification, in this case a stereo microscope at about 8X. Holding the work piece so that there was good access and so that it could be repositioned as necessary was the final obstacle. The PanaVise 203 Pv Jr. head, coupled with a 300 series base, looked to be suitable, but I had concerns about how well it would work.
The 203 head was perfect for the job. The jaws do flex under load, but the carving wax blank was held firmly, and the flexibility of positioning options invaluable.
My only gripe is that you have to buy the PV Jr. Speed Control separately (model 239). The speed control is a much better tightening mechanism than what comes with the 203 and really speeds up opening and closing the jaws.
The old saying "you get what you pay for" comes to mind when describing Panavise products. They may cost a little more than what one might expect to pay for the cheap-made-in-China crap foisted upon the average consumer but they come with a lifetime warranty and are definately high quality tools.
I'm just mad that I didn't find out about Panavise sooner. All my other 3rd hand tools are going in the garbage!
I think the temptation of low production costs will lure PanaVise to move more production to China. PanaVise is not the quality manufacturer they used to be.
203 Jr. does just fine. Don't waste your time on the cheap stuff. You'll wind up getting a Pana Vice anyway.
I ordered one separately after reading the reviews and discovered that I didn't need to. Now I have a spare. :-)
Also - if you work on small boards, this product may be better that the larger PanaVise 315 Circuit Board Holder as you can easily flip the board over to switch between component insertion (from the top) and soldering (on the bottom).

This works great for small electronic work. It can hold PCBs from tablets, which have SMD components on which I work. The macro-micro adjustment on the threading is very useful. Read morePublished 21 months ago by Kaushik Basu
