I was expecting to be able to use this for circuits with my Panavise. While it certainly does work that way, I found it somewhat cumbersome to tighten the boards, and they did not seem as sturdily held as I'd like. Kind of flimsy and sometimes the boards would slip out. I didn't want to tighten them to kingdom come to make sure the boards stayed. Also it seems to loosen easily as well. I'm not very pleased with this.

I bought this head with a standard base and the parts-tray sub-base. All together it was less than 50 bucks. They work perfectly and are incredibly well-built. I cannot think of a way to improve it.

In the restoration of a highly-modeled, 19th century German Jasperware wall plaque, I faced the following challenge: A wing of one of the two cherubs depicted had broken off and was lost, and had to be replaced. The wing would be visible on all sides, and the three remaining wings could not be used as a direct model. The wing would be only 7/8" long, 1/2" wide, gently curved and never more than 1/8" thick, with approximately 25 highly-detailed feathers carved into each side.

A hard carving wax proved to be a suitable medium for a model that could later be cast, and miniature tools where ground to shape. The level of detail required that the carving be done under magnification, in this case a stereo microscope at about 8X. Holding the work piece so that there was good access and so that it could be repositioned as necessary was the final obstacle. The PanaVise 203 Pv Jr. head, coupled with a 300 series base, looked to be suitable, but I had concerns about how well it would work.

The 203 head was perfect for the job. The jaws do flex under load, but the carving wax blank was held firmly, and the flexibility of positioning options invaluable.

The 203 head is sturdy and DEFINATELY NOT FLIMSY! I use this on my soldering station work center (324) about 90% of the time. I can't praise it enough. It makes a great 3rd hand for soldering and prototyping small circuit boards (and breadboards).

My only gripe is that you have to buy the PV Jr. Speed Control separately (model 239). The speed control is a much better tightening mechanism than what comes with the 203 and really speeds up opening and closing the jaws.

The old saying "you get what you pay for" comes to mind when describing Panavise products. They may cost a little more than what one might expect to pay for the cheap-made-in-China crap foisted upon the average consumer but they come with a lifetime warranty and are definately high quality tools.

I'm just mad that I didn't find out about Panavise sooner. All my other 3rd hand tools are going in the garbage!

I was a little worried about the type of plastic used on the jaws, and the quality/design of the ball & socket. However, after receiving this, I was blown away. There are sleeve bearings everywhere and the plastic is NOT cheap, it's some kind of rigid composite totally appropriate for this application (i.e. it's a small-stuff "holder" not a "crusher"). There are little friction-fingers inside the ball-socket, and the ball is powder-coated steel. The out-of-the-box action was fairly smooth, though I did add a bit of dry graphite lube to the moving parts and threads. Totally worth the premium price, you really are getting what you pay for.

Have a small connector you want to solder, or a small circuit board? This little guy is just the one to securely hold onto it so that you can get the job done. Forget about those cheep "third hand" gizmos. I have one, they always wind up slipping. The alligator clips that hold the parts are hollow on the inside and collapse when the screw is torqued down. They're just cheap products that don't need to hold much. Then cannot hold something as small as an XLR audio connector, but the PanaVise
203 Jr. does just fine. Don't waste your time on the cheap stuff. You'll wind up getting a Pana Vice anyway.

I use this for all sorts of things. Most of all, I use it for soldering my electronic circuit boards, which is what it was designed for. However, I do not use the base that was designed for it. I use a Noga magnetic base (Google it) after turning down the it’s stem with a lathe. I have even used it as a medical device to hold a PICC line for IV infusions. I had a severe infection that required two weeks of IV infusions. I could not reach the PICC line (Google it) with my left arm and used this as a holding device. It saved my life.

I bought the PanaVise 350 Multi-Purpose Work Center and the PanaVise 203 Pv Jr. Vise Head With 5/8 Inch Shaft For 300 Series Bases - and together they are a fabulous platform for small electrical hobby construction work. They have completely simplified and improved my circuit board stuffing and soldering activities. I highly recommend them if you do small to medium size circuit board work !!
