This was the best and most complete cruise book that I have ever purchased. It talks in detail about the history, birds, animals and destinations for Panama cruises.

I bought this to prepare for a Panama Canal Cruise. If you want detailed historical info, read PANAMA FEVER, available at Amazon. However, this guide to the cruise and ports gives an excellent concise history of the French and American efforts to build the canal and make the book that much more valuable.

Book is well written and is an excellent read for anyone cruising the Panama Canal. Includes a very nice removable map with ports in Florida and California.

We took a Panama Canal cruise recently and used this guide throughout our three week cruise and found it very useful. The history of the canal in this book is especially riveting when you learn of the sacrifice of so many people who perished while building the canal. The background on the engineering challenges gives a good picture of why it took so long for a canal to be built. There are over 70 pages on the history, construction and operation of the canal which, along with the numerous maps of the canal (including a huge pullout map) and dozens of archival photos, really takes you back to the time of this engineering marvel. The book also had all the ports, at least on our itinerary, we visited before and after the canal segment. Great book!

Anne Vipond has taken us to Alaska, Hawaii and through the Panama Canal with her guides. Her books are well written with regional history, cruise tips, and great information on ports. Frankly, we have not found other tour guides nearly as valuable. She will again be in our suitcase when we cruise the Mediterranean in the fall of 2010.

I second all the positive reviews this book has received. The book title says it all, "complete guide..". The pages are interspersed with photos, maps, and numerous port details.

We are planning a Panama Canal Cruise in fall of '09. This updated book seems to have all the bases covered including booking a cruise, port of calls, excursions,ship activities, what to and not to take, weather, maps, hints and tips and of course a great history of the canal. A large detailed map of the canal is also included. We would highly recommemend this book to be bought BEFORE going on a Panama Canal Cruise.

This guide covered the ports of call and also gave a good historical summary of how the canal was built. Good advice for shopping, excursions, etc.

We are planning a spring cruise through Panama and thought this book helped us greatly. The layout coincides almost exactly with our itineary from Florida through the canal. The history is quite fascinating, I didn't realize the scope of the effort between France and the United States to complete the project. Color images and maps are excellent and text includes cruise stuff such as shore excursions. Very helpful

I just returned from a Panama Canal cruise and took this book along, using it every step of the way. At each port I consulted this guide for quick information on history and highlights. Also contains in-depth history on the building of the canal and everything you want to know about it. Also, good map/schematic of the canal itself in pullout format. Highly recommended.
