Book Description

March 15, 2000
"Panama Now" is a yearbook in content but published every few years. It is also related to the coffee-table genre. However you care to consider the book, it is, as its sub-title describes it, a portrait of the Panamanian nation.

This edition reflects the "state of the nation" at the beginning of the new millenium and details the important changes which are taking place in these challenging times. The book is now in its fourth edition and has become a standard reference work, a top seller at bookstores and news stands throughout the Republic and sought-after by investors, scholars and travellers; not to mention Panamanians who want to keep at hand concise information about all aspects of the Republic's affairs or send a copy to associates, friends or family abroad. The book is also published in a Spanish language edition called "Panama Hoy".

The chapters in the book are the work of Panamanian journalists, foreign correspondents and experts in various fields. Talented photographers, national and foreign, have contributed their work for the outstanding sections of pictures and many companies and institutions have submitted "profiles" which add another dimension in showing the strenght of Panama's economy and social structure. It all adds up to an attractive book which reflects the exciting times in which we live.

Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

In the hundred years that Panama has been a nation, there has almost never been a dull moment. It was pretty lively, too, in the days of the conquistadors and the pirates... but that's another story.

The construction of the canal, the commerce the waterway attracted, the struggle by Panamanians to regain their rightful heritage and finally the day when the Panama Canal passed to Panama's control, created an exciting era.

The new era promises to be just as exciting and challenging. Restricted formerly by U.S. tenure fo the five-mile-wide strip of land on either side of the canal, Panama has now begun to exploit this land and the facilities and infrastructure which the U.S. left behind.

Although the economy will suffer from the absence of the business generated by U.S. military bases, development of the canal area is progressing at such a pace that the loss will be in the short term. The development of the ports and a rail freight system is one example.

Panama has never been such a land of opportunity. This book reports the transition and highlights the opportunities and challenges in many different fields — in tourism, transport, industry, high technology, to name a few. It also reflects the beauty, traditions and culture of the country; the lasting values of the country provinces and their capitals and the vibrant progress of cosmopolitan Panama City and the new Panamanian canal area.
