5.0 out of 5 stars Chuleta! My favorite of the three ..., November 11, 2011

This review is from: Panama 2: Latin Sounds Cumbia Tropical, 1967-77 (Audio CD)
Here's why: Quintessential Panama. Most of the music on this CD reflects more of the indigenous culture and how it blended into the popular music. Indeed, main compiler Roberto Gyemant spent quite some time in Panama's Interior, searching for old vinyl records for this set. This is the kind of music a visitor to panama would hear second hand - on the street, so to speak. It could be coming out of car radios passing by, or even in a taxi ride, or far away from the cities. One could be hiking in the Interior or just walking around the outskirts of Isla Taboga. Someone is partyin' somewhere! I have to admit, for myself it's an acquired taste. I lived in Panama for two years and it took a while for this stuff to sink in. Now when I get homesick for one of my favorite places in the world, I can listen to this one and it takes me right back. Chuleta ... I love this stuff!

That's my vote for Volume 2. Go to Volume 1 if you are new to Latin sounds and want to hear music that is closer to American rock, R&B, soul etc. If you end up loving that stuff, you can dig deeper and come back to this one.

Volume 3 has more Caribbean influences in it. Pick that one if you wanna "put de lime in de coconut and drink it all up", and drink a little more.
