5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value, Seems to be doing the job, June 20, 2008

As someone else said, this is not designed to replace surge protectors for your electronics or computers so don't stop using those if you get this. It's really meant to protect your motor driven appliances, like the fridge, freezer, furnace, etc. However, it certainly doesn't hurt to have the extra protection for the electronics too.

Installing this is a piece of cake if you know a little bit about electricity. You do need a 1/2" conduit locknut to secure this to your panel, you also need 1 30A double pole circuit breaker. I thought it would come with a locknut but it wasn't a big deal to pick one up along with the breaker. The hardest part of the install for me was just finding a good place to mount it. Once you figure that out turn the main breaker off, install the 30A double pole breaker & Panamax, and make connections. It's straightforward and the instructions that come with it are good.

Every house should have one of these!

5.0 out of 5 stars Panamax is the best!, February 9, 2009
This review is from: Panamax GPP8005 Max¨ Service Entrance Protector (Electronics)
I've had this installed in my condo in Miami Beach for 5 years. It's survived several hurricanes, countless thunderstorms (in a 36 story building, you get hit constantly). I've never had any damages to any of my appliances, ceiling fans, etc. Computers and stereo equipment of course get additional surge protection suited for their sensitive nature (Panamax of course). I'm so happy I'm about to buy 3 more for the new house I'm building which has 3 panels. Panamax consistently backs their products with outstanding warranties. I've seen one outlet of a 6 output power bar literally fry and smoke and chunks of metal flew out (due to a serious problem on the connected equipment) yet no damage to very expensive and delicate equipment connected to the other outlets on the same power bar. I can't think of any recommendation higher than that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to install, could have better specs, December 28, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Panamax GPP8005 Max¨ Service Entrance Protector (Electronics)
I ordered this service entrance surge suppressor in August for $73. Very easy to install on a breaker box- less than 5 minutes and the only tools needed were a screwdriver and pliers. A flashlight held by a helpful assistant is a good idea.

Reason for less-than-5 star rating is the 2700 joule specification for energy dissipation. That's low, considering that one can buy a Belkin outlet strip for $23 that has a 3960 joule rating. It's also not clear that Panamax's warranty will fully apply to this device when purchased through Amazon, as Panamax only warrants products bought through approved Internet vendors and it's not clear that Amazon has this status.

Interesting the price has risen from $73 to $120 in less than 6 months.
