As someone else said, this is not designed to replace surge protectors for your electronics or computers so don't stop using those if you get this. It's really meant to protect your motor driven appliances, like the fridge, freezer, furnace, etc. However, it certainly doesn't hurt to have the extra protection for the electronics too.

3.0 out of 5 stars Be cautious about using this product INSTEAD OF surge protectors on sensitive electronic equipment
I have recently reviewed several manufacturer's online sites for this kind of device, and believe every site said to use this kind of device to protect the motors in your house--AND also to use individual surge protectors on your sensitive electronic equipment such as computers and sound systems.

Installing this is a piece of cake if you know a little bit about electricity. You do need a 1/2" conduit locknut to secure this to your panel, you also need 1 30A double pole circuit breaker. I thought it would come with a locknut but it wasn't a big deal to pick one up along with the breaker. The hardest part of the install for me was just finding a good place to mount it. Once you figure that out turn the main breaker off, install the 30A double pole breaker & Panamax, and make connections. It's straightforward and the instructions that come with it are good.

Every house should have one of these!

5.0 out of 5 stars Panamax is the best!, February 9, 2009
This review is from: Panamax GPP8005 Max¨ Service Entrance Protector (Electronics)
I've had this installed in my condo in Miami Beach for 5 years. It's survived several hurricanes, countless thunderstorms (in a 36 story building, you get hit constantly). I've never had any damages to any of my appliances, ceiling fans, etc. Computers and stereo equipment of course get additional surge protection suited for their sensitive nature (Panamax of course). I'm so happy I'm about to buy 3 more for the new house I'm building which has 3 panels. Panamax consistently backs their products with outstanding warranties. I've seen one outlet of a 6 output power bar literally fry and smoke and chunks of metal flew out (due to a serious problem on the connected equipment) yet no damage to very expensive and delicate equipment connected to the other outlets on the same power bar. I can't think of any recommendation higher than that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to install, could have better specs, December 28, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Panamax GPP8005 Max¨ Service Entrance Protector (Electronics)
I ordered this service entrance surge suppressor in August for $73. Very easy to install on a breaker box- less than 5 minutes and the only tools needed were a screwdriver and pliers. A flashlight held by a helpful assistant is a good idea.

Reason for less-than-5 star rating is the 2700 joule specification for energy dissipation. That's low, considering that one can buy a Belkin outlet strip for $23 that has a 3960 joule rating. It's also not clear that Panamax's warranty will fully apply to this device when purchased through Amazon, as Panamax only warrants products bought through approved Internet vendors and it's not clear that Amazon has this status.

Interesting the price has risen from $73 to $120 in less than 6 months.

5.0 out of 5 stars So far so good, August 24, 2008

I bought this device just after the capacitor to my A/C fan motor blew up, in hope to prevent unprotected devices in our home like the appliances (and A/C), as it's difficult to get surge protectors for every device. I have individual ones for all my PC's and TV's, but having this device for the whole house provides a little extra added peace of mind!

Device arrived just in time for my electrician to install it and no problems so far...seems to be doing it's job.

This has been up and running on my service entrance for over three years with no problem. The best time to install would be during a service entrance install during new contruction or ungrades to power service. This is because they recommend wiring this directly to incoming power right off the pole. If you do that, it might be a good idea to have a pair of insulated wire cutters along with elecrtician's gloves handy as there is a audible alarm that will sound if the unit has been compromised. You would have to cut the wires (10 GAGE) to silence this and that could happen at any time. I have mine wired through a dedicated double pole breaker and there have been no problems so far. It is difficult to say whether this has protected anything so far as the only way of knowing it did not do its job would be damage to something in the house. This has not happened and we have had some nasty thunderstorms with power outages and no fried computers, etc. This is good insurance for expensive equipment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Panamax whole house surge protector, March 1, 2011

I had this installed in a house I bought 2.5 years ago. I had it professionally installed. It gives me good peace of mind with all the electronics I have in my house (computers and home theater, etc.). I still use power strips with surge protectors built in, but not everywhere. But I know I am protected. I would buy again if I needed one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Doing the job; no complaints, August 22, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Panamax GPP8005 Max¨ Service Entrance Protector (Electronics)
I bought this product to protect built-in devices which cannot be protected by individual surge suppressors. These include a gas oven (with electronic controls), and a dishwasher.
I still use good individual surge protectors for computer and home entertainment equipment.
Since installation, I have had no incidents. The unit is always showing the two green LED's, and the 30A 2-pole circuit breaker has never tripped.

I did the installation myself, and wired it directly to the SE panel. This is the best installation, since the wiring is as short as possible. Installation was easy, but you have to know what you are doing to work inside the SE panel.

I recommend this product, but have an electrician do the install unless you are comfortable working with electricity, and understand how these devices work.
