Product Description

Panasonic and Leica Camera have launched development of a Leica D large-diameter telephoto zoom lens designed specifically for digital SLR camera. The Leica D Vario-Elmarit 14-150mm/ F3.5-5.6 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S., lens offers an exceptionally long zoom range of 14-150mm (35mm equivalent: 28-300mm) and complies with the four thirds system to assure wide compatibility with other camera models. The lens provides a considerably longer telephoto range than the previously released Leica D Vario-Elmarit 14-50mm/ F2.8-3.5 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S. lens, yet is just as compact and lightweight. This impressive downsizing is the result of incorporating four aspherical lenses in the unit. The aspherical lenses also improve optical performance by minimizing distortion, even at the 28mm wide end.The Leica D Vario-Elmarit lens incorporates Panasonic's Mega O.I.S. optical image stabilizer, which makes it easy to shoot super-telephoto shots without using a tripod. When the lens is mounted on the Lumix DMC-L1, Panasonic's first digital SLR camera, or the Vario-Elmarit 3, you can use the aperture ring provided and enjoy easy, intuitive shooting. This combination of an extended 28-300mm shooting range, Mega O.I.S. optical image stabilizer, and an aperture ring for intuitive control makes the Leica D Vario-Elmarit 14-150mm/F3.5-5.6 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S. lens perfect for capturing clear, beautiful, expressive images when shooting a wide variety of subjects and in a host of conditions.

Panasonic L-RS014150 14-150mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS Four Thirds Lens for Panasonic Digital SLM Cameras

The First LEICA D Lens with Zoom Range to 300mm
Mega OIS Icon

This powerful, large-diameter 10.7x telephoto LEICA D VARIO-ELMAR 14-150mm/ F3.5-5.6 ASPH./ MEGA O.I.S. camera lens offers an exceptionally long zoom range of 14-150mm (35mm equivalent: 28-300mm) and complies with the Four Thirds System to assure wide compatibility with other camera models. The new four thirds camera lens is the first LEICA D lens to incorporate Extra Silent (XS) technology, which assures quick, quiet, accurate auto focusing control from minimum focus distance of 50 cm even at full zoom to the entire zoom range.

A Compact, Reliable and Light Weight Camera Lens
LEICA D

The L-RS014150 camera lens contains 15 elements in 11 groups (4 Aspherical lenses and 1 ED lens) for a superb optical performance. Seven aperture blades give the aperture a rounded shape that, when shooting at larger aperture, produces an attractive smoothness in out-of-focus areas. This lightweight lens system offers exceptional zoom power yet is as compact as a standard zoom lens.

Minimized Distortion

The L-RS014150 interchangeable lens features MEGA O.I.S (optical image stabilizer); Panasonic's advanced hand-shake correction technology which makes it easy to shoot super-telephoto shots without using a tripod. The new lens system uses multi-coated lens elements that reduce ghosts and flare to an absolute minimum. It delivers high resolution from edge to edge along with low distortion and improved optical performance by minimizing distortion, even at the 28mm wide end.

Bought this lens as it was the fastest 4/3 system zoom lens at the time (April 2010). Extremely satisfied with it! Kudos to Panasonic management for choosing to partner with the best expertise around.

Performance:
- Zoom & Aperture: Great zoom versatility, but having experienced the very fast 20mm/1.7 pancake lens (with my gf1), it makes me miss a larger aperture once in a while. But then, in day time walking around, it gives me great freedom to zoom into favorite compositions. Actually wider than the 20mm prime for landscape shots. The maximum aperture runs up automatically from 3.5 (at 14mm=28mm equiv) to 5.6 (at 150mm=300mm equiv) easily noticeable when in Aperture mode.
- Stunningly sharp: Living 7 blocks away from the Chrysler building, when playing with some zoom shots, I discovered I could distinguish individual bricks and slabs on the facade when zooming in all the way. Again STUNNING sharpness.
- The image stabilizer called MEGA OIS does its job, but I try to stay away from low light & shutter speed situations with this lens. It will still be useful to practice steady hand shots, especially since this lens is very heavy. In my case I'll be buying a x-pod to increase versatility at slow shutter speeds. Generally wise to try and lean against anything solid and to use a viewfinder so that you can press the heavy camera-lens combination against your face for minimal stability.
- Out of focus areas look nice, although it is more difficult to use DOF as a creative element with this lens. Haven't experimented enough with the DOF program setting of the camera.

Usage:
- Very silent: Neither the focus nor the MEGA OIS makes notice-able noise so this lens is superb for video recordings as well.

Had to return it. Great lens in many respects but couldn't get used to the zoom slip--it doesn't just creep it slips fast. It would tend to stay put at the short zoom extreme even when pointed down but if set in the middle zoom range, it would not hold position unless you held onto the zoom ring, which can often be very awkward to do when trying to manipulate the camera or the focus ring.
