Any one own or use a Panasonic AG-HMC40 AVCCAM HD Camcorder? I'm looking into buying one to film my documentary film. The big question is if I will need to buy the additional XLR adapter AG-MYA30G or not. There is a mini mic plug. If I buy a higher end shotgun mic that uses the mini plug, will this be good enough? The shotgun mics have a battery so no need for phantom power. I also I want to use a wired lavalier mic which also has a batttery. Will the sound quality be as good or do I really need to get the XLR adapter?
You dont need the XLR adapter. You can always buy one later. I just bought one for $77.00. I advise recording your sound to a SEPARATE digital recorder, then synching it up in post later. Dont depend on the camera to record your sound. For quick interviews, use a wired lapel to camera. Shotgun on top of camera is OK for a general recording. Another option is a XLR to miniplug adapter for about $12.00, then use any decent XLR microphone. If you are doing the important documentary, I would surely record separate sound. Then synch in post Several options there for you. Good luck
