Good rice cooker if you know the trick,

I bought this rice cooker 2 months ago.(after having a problem with my old nonstick rice cooker) The reason I chose this one because I don't like Taflon nonstick surface. It'd come off no matter how you took good care of it. So far, I'm very pleased with it.
I'm an Asain who eat rice everyday. I cooked as little as 2 cup or as much as 5 cup (full capacity). I never had any experience about rice stick in the bottom of the pot. However, you have to know the trick. Every time you cook rice, you have to let it stand in the pot for at least 10 to 15 minutes (after the cook button change to warm button) before taking rice out of the pot, as a result, rice will never stick. And for this price ($26.99), it's very worth my money for having perfect rice in every meal. Clean up is very easy, just soak the inner pot for several minutes before cleaning.

Good Little Rice Cooker,

Size is perfect for 2 to 4 people, and cooks rice very nicely. And its true what another reviewer said - let the rice rest for 10 mins after cooking and it wont stick. I prefer to unplug it and not have the warm feature. I have cooked white and brown with this rice cooker and have obtained good results. Just be sure to adjust amount of water depending on the type of rice you are cooking.
Cleaning is easy. Couple of ergonomic things I dont like: the handles are really dinky, and the cooking pot has a very shallow lip (unlike my old 20-year National which this replaced). Also power cord is permanently attached which can be awkward for storing. All in all, price is right!

Its cheap... You want to cook rice... it will cook rice... how complicated can that get?
But dont expect perfection... The rice sticks to the bottom especially if you leave it in there for too long after its cooked. But its not the hardest thing in the world to clean it... just leave some warm water in the vessel for a while and the rice that was stuck to the bottom comes right off... The bottom line is that it does the job... and thats what I was looking for.

Great cooker for those who want to eat rice without Teflon bits !!!!,

Several reviewers have commented saying they don't like it because it does not have non stick surface but has only aluminum pot. This cooker is for those who want to eat rice without TEFLON bits peeled off and mixed with rice. Those Teflon bits are toxins and can hurt one's body in the long run. Yes, it is harder to clean than non-stick surface but healthier.

I searched high and low for an inexpensive rice cooker that did not use any nonstick coating (the fluorocarbons shed by the nonstick is supposed to pass through the human body, but studies show trace amounts lingering for decades). This is the only one I found. I works like a charm, cooks quickly, and cleans up easily (if you soak it for about an hour before washing). Wish Panasonic or someone else would make a larger capacity in the same material.

Rest assured that the low price of this rice cooker does not mean that you'll get low quality rice. Just the opposite actually. My first rice cooker was a fancy (expensive) fuzzy logic version, and I returned it because it made awful rice. This rice cooker makes perfect rice of every variety. With brown and whole grain (or any rice that requires cooking longer than 20 minutes per bag instructions), you need to add a bit more water - approx. 1/8-1/4 cup depending on type of rice.

Nice cooker,

Had to update my rice cooker as my other panasonic of over 20 years gave out. This cooker is the updated version very easy to use, works just as well. The only draw back is no steaming tray was included but my old one works in this unit and the cord is attached to the machine unlike the older versions making it a little more difficult for storage. Other than the new design the cooker is great value for the price and works nicely.

I purchased this as a replacement for a 5+ year old (and smaller) Panasonic rice cooker that fell on the floor a few too many times (the on/off switch/lever eventually broke.)
Like the other one, this one cooks rice perfectly, is easy to clean, and remarkably easy to cook rice. Add rice, add water, press the one button it has...a while later, out comes perfect rice. Having not owned any other makes or models (other than the other Panasonic), I can't say this is better than the competition - but it does speak volumes for Panasonic that I have no need or desire to look elsewhere for a great rice cooker. Highly recommended, and would buy again.

I've been using this for a couple of months now to make brown and white rice and I've been very happy with it. It's a good size for 2-4 people. It makes perfect rice if you follow the guide in the booklet that comes with it. I thoroughly rinse the rice (more on that in the next paragraph), then soak it for 30mins before cooking, then when it's done cooking I let it stand for 15 minutes. Cooking usually takes 30 minutes to an hour depending on the type and amount of rice. The rice cooker switches to "warming" mode once it's finished cooking.
I would suggest you rinse your rice before cooking it, although there seems to be a debate over whether you should or not. Most rice sold in the USA is coated with extra vitamins by the producer. So, rinsing will remove the vitamins but will also remove a lot of the extra starch, making for a cleaner, lighter rice once cooked. To rinse, I put the rice in the pot, cover it with water, swirl the rice around throughly, then tilt the pot to drain the water. Repeat several times until the water stops getting cloudy as you swirl. With brown rice especially the water gets extremely cloudy. Others will tell you not to rinse rice before cooking to preserve the nutrition, so it's something you have to decide for yourself. Back to the review... I wanted a rice cooker without a non-stick coating because I'm paranoid and would rather not risk the health effects of Teflon. It takes a little extra work to clean this pot but as long as you soak it then it's not a big deal. This cooker is definitely worth the money - it's simple, works well and doesn't cost a lot. You also get the ability to steam food with it. The only bad thing about it is once it enters the warming cycle, the only way to turn it off is to unplug it. But that's really a non-issue for me and if you can live with that then you'll have a good little rice cooker.

Rice cooker overboils the water and leaves countertops messy,
By
This review is from: Panasonic Automatic Rice Cooker 5-Cup (uncooked), White, SR-G10G (Kitchen)
As an Asian male college student, I live off cheap and (sometimes) healthy food which includes a twice-thrice daily portion of rice. Using the panasonic SR-G10G, I often get messy countertops and sticky residue over the rim of the rice cooker. As a student, I don't have time to clean the pot 3 times daily to use it. Compared to other automatic rice cookers Panasonic SR-TMB10 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker/Warmer, Silver, this flop top rice cooker requires a large time commitment to clean up. Although it is cheap, I'd rather spend the extra $40-60 and get something both easier to clean up and slightly more aesthetically pleasing.
As for the sticky rice on the bottom, it often leaves a hard crusty, tough to clean rice shell if you DO NOT clean it right after you're done eating. If you're like me, you won't have time to clean it up EVERY TIME you're done eating. In this case, this rice cooker is CLEARLY not for you. Sometimes I have to run to work or class with a very tight schedule and I can't clean up the mess this cooker leaves behind. Also, the cook times are unbearably long (around 20-30 minutes) compared to a 10-15 minute automatic cooker. Again, if you're running around all day like me, those 10-15 extra minutes saved from NOT using this rice cooker can really give you a boost of energy for your day. Bottom line: I WOULD NOT recommend this product to a friend and save your $20 and invest it in a more practical rice cooker. I ended up throwing this rice cooker in the trash and buying an automatic one for around $80-100. |
