Velocity-scan modulation improves the definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. The CT-27SL13's motion-adaptive three-line comb filter further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped t-shirt).
The set's horizontal and vertical edge correction sharpens the edges of pictured objects, working in conjunction with the dynamic sharpness control and velocity modulated scan to produce clean, crisp images and reduce video noise. An onboard wideband video amplifier expands the video signal frequency response to more than 10 MHz, granting a horizontal resolution of 700 lines (maximum).
Through channel labeling, you can assign an ID of one to four characters (such as KIRO or WNET) to up to 30 different channels. This feature comes in handy when cable systems assign different channel numbers to familiar network stations. Channel banner captures information transmitted with each program and places it onscreen in a semi-transparent banner. This information includes TV station identification and the V-Chip rating for the current program.
The set gives you stereo audio (with five watts per channel) from broadcast programming via Multi-channel Television Sound (MTS), which permits broadcasters to encode stereo audio within the video portion of TV programming signals. SAP (second audio program, with dbx noise reduction) often offers an additional language track, and BBE High-Definition Sound improves speech intelligibility and restores the dynamic range of compressed musical passages.
A component-video input grants optimum connection with a compatible DVD player, while standard composite- and S-video inputs accommodate all DVD players. You can choose between two sets of rear AV inputs and a set of front AV inputs for extra convenience, as when hooking up a camcorder or gaming console. A rear audio (switchable fixed-/variable-level) output lets you hook the set up with an integrated amplifier or surround receiver. The set also features a trilingual onscreen display (English, Spanish, French), closed-caption display, V-Chip parental control, a sleep timer, auto-off, and a universal remote control.

This review is from: Panasonic CT-27SL13 27" Pure Flat TV (Silver) (Electronics)
I am really happy with this TV. The picture is clear and the colors are very full. The different settings you can choose from, depending on the lighting in the room, are great. Menu navigation is easy. The remote is perfect. The sound from the speakers are a great. Very full sound. I always thought Sony made the best TV's, but after having this in my apartment for 2 weeks, my mind has changed.

Being on a bit of a budget, we couldnt really afford more than $400 for a tv, our first choice was a 31 inch sanyo set on sale at walmart, some people giving it a decent review, having watched an evening of it, we decided the picture was really sub-par. Forinstance on well lit areas such as outdoor scenes, everything but the light areas were so dark you couldnt see them, a major problem when it came to faces and other areas where detail really mattered. So we did a bit of research and found 3 tvs of a 27in flat screen, and similar spec.Ie comb filters, etc We decided on the panasonic, and wow am I impressed!! I have a degree in electronic servicing I have never had a NORMAL tv connected to my PC that I can actually read the text on clearly!! the picture is sharp, has multiple settings for the best settings to what you desire, the sound is amazing. If you have a dvd input to the set, its a truly amazing experience for a crt tv, thats not even hdtv! We paid #359 and its the best $359 we have ever spent on a tv. My dad had a panasonic set for 16 years, its still going, albiet with a bit of colour distortion. Im from england so I can definately say Panasonic are worldwide when it comes to quality, and to say they are keeping with the current trend of high quality vision, would be an understatement.HIGHLY HIGHLY recommended!!! noone who buys should be disappointed!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Panasonic CT-27SL13 27" Pure Flat TV (Silver) (Electronics)
I've had this TV for about 10 days now, so I can make some informed comments now. I purchased this as a replacement for an 12-year old, but still trusty, Panasonic 21-inch television. The first thing that jumped out at me was the sound quality, which is nothing short of superb. It sounds at times as if it's hooked up to stereo system speakers, but it's just the built-in speakers producing the outstanding sound.I would rate the picture as good--not terrific, but certainly competitive with similar rival products. One note, however: I had to make significant adjustments to the factory settings to get a good picture. The first problem I encountered was dark scenes that were too dark, with much detail missing. One culprit was "Pic Mode," which was preset to "vivid." I changed this setting to "standard" and, right away, things improved. I also uppped the brightness and decreased the sharpness. Suddenly the too-dark problems were gone. In addition, I don't know why TVs often come set so that Caucasian people look as if they have an extreme case of rosacea. No one looks like that in real life--unless they really do have a bad case of rosacea with its attendant red cheeks and nose! One of the things I found I had to do was to increase the tint setting, which decreases the red flesh tones. One disappointment for me was that my old Panasonic had a slightly better picture than this one, but this 27-inch flat screen picture is still very good. All in all, this is a good product.
