5.0 out of 5 stars looks aren't everything, this thing rocks!!!!
I think this is the best camera I have ever owned. It is a little old school looking, but I personally like it. The image stabilization is great, it's got a built in wide angle lens, it zooms without the lens moving on the outside, it's a very nice camera. I did my research before I bought this one and went to consumer reports and this camera had the highest ratings...

3.0 out of 5 stars lens should be in the middle
the camera takes great pictures and the controls are easy to use. the only flaw is that the lens is up in the left hand corner instead of in the middle of the camera so i have taken a lot of pictures with my finger in the frame. the camera is very small so someone with big hands like myself might want to consider a camera that is a little bigger...i am always feeling...

Highly recommend this camera

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Camera, February 5, 2010

Takes pictures extremely fast. Can take a picture within ~1-2 seconds of turning the camera on. Consecutive pictures come very quickly, even when charging the flash. One of the few point and shoot camera's that will allow you to zoom in and out while shooting 720P video. I used to buy Canon camera's exclusively, but I wanted to start shooting quick video clips of my kids, so I was specifically looking for a great point and shoot that takes acceptable video. I shoot video when something is happening, which usually means you would like to zoom to keep the action in frame. Takes great quality pictures. 4.6 optical zoom is also above average for this price point. Great for super close ups as well.

Have been extremely happy with this camera, once I sent the first one back to J&R due to a spec of dust internal to the camera. I would give them one out of 5 stars for the extremely slow handling of my RMA.

I decided on the DCM-FP8 based on a couple of previous Lumix models I have had. This model caught my attention for 2 primary reasons; 1) the 12.1 MP quality and 2) the image stabilization feature. I use a camera mostly on the job and take quick and spontaneous shots (image stabilization becomes very important.) This unit does not let me down! The picture quality is superb and the portability is exactly what I was looking for--I highly recommend the DCM-FP8 if you are looking for a simple to use, high quality, and portable "point-n-shoot" camera.

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome!, March 30, 2010
This review is from: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP8 12.1MP Digital Camera with 4.6x POWER Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7 inch LCD (Black) (Electronics)
I spent a lot of time looking at the ratings on this camera. Consumer Reports recommends it, and the reviews on every other website I checked out seemed very positive. I was not disappointed. Once the power button is turned on, the camera is ready to take a picture in 2-3 seconds (great for those spontaneous shots). There's a feature that automatically detects the best settings to use for every shot you take. It's compact and lightweight. The screen is very clear and plenty large, and the controls are simple to understand. All in all, this was a great purchase, and I highly recommend this camera.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Camera, January 29, 2010
This review is from: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP8 12.1MP Digital Camera with 4.6x POWER Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7 inch LCD (Black) (Electronics)
I'm not one for writing reviews, however I thought I should help offset the negative review (that is obviously for a different product.) I do own the camera, it has a quick response when shooting pictures, takes nice video, and has a multitude of different modes and settings. So it's a solid point and shoot, decent battery life, and a good price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great FP8, March 24, 2010

I am a big Canon fan. My last camera was a five year old G2. It gave me years of quality service. I almost went with the Canon Elfs as I was now looking for a pocket camera. But I after researching I decided to take a chance on the FP8. Really happy I did. It came when it was supposed to. Everything was there.( also bought extra memory and battery)
It was supposed to be used, but I couldn't tell; looks brand new to me: in the original box and packing.
Took a bunch of pics and video in several modes and environments.
I expected the pic to be really good and they were. In fact, even better than I expected. I don't expect to take much video with it, but I tested it anyway. Wow! Did not expect the video to be so great. I cant believe these little pocket point and shoots have this kind of picture and video quality. Camera, extra battery and 8GB of extra memory for $200. I took the free shipping. Took like 6 days to get to me, I was in no rush. I'm happy.
I am now a fan of Canon and Panasonic. Also, if you don't take much video, only pics, 8GB memeory card is over kill. But it was so cheap I bought it anyway. With the ease of use, and quality, of the video I may start taking more video. If I do, I have plenty of room for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars JUST THE CAMERA I WAS LOOKING FOR!!!, May 10, 2010

This review is from: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP8 12.1MP Digital Camera with 4.6x POWER Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7 inch LCD (Black) (Electronics)
Consulted a professional photographer friend and told him I wanted a small (for traveling), easy-to-use (I have no real interest in bells & whistles) camera that has great battery life and a fast recovery rate between shots. Without missing a beat he recommended the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP8. I ordered it on a Friday and got it Monday morning!!!!! That's shipped via priority mail/USPS from LA and to Orlando! Amazingly fast delivery. Charged the battery and took about 15 minutes to set it up and start taking great pictures. Blazingly fast startup and recovery between shots (both with flash and w/o). It comes with an instruction manual, software, AV & USB wires, battery & charger. (Note, it does not come with a photo storage card. . .you'll need to purchase this separately.) It is a perfect camera for my type of picture taking and very compact. You will love the Intelligent Auto feature. . .makes taking great pictures brainless.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great small camera for the price, don't zoom though, April 14, 2010

This review is from: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP8 12.1MP Digital Camera with 4.6x POWER Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7 inch LCD (Black) (Electronics)
This is a fabulous little camera. It does not have any lense that has to retract when it turns on so it turns on fast, focuses fast, and takes fabulous pictures. I actually put it in my rc airplane and takes pictures from the sky with it. It always takes perfectly clear pictures when doing this.

My only complaint is that when I zoom in (not used in my airplane) in any normal use like in the house, kids playing outside, etc - the picture gets grainy. Hence the 4 star rather than 5. But I don't normally use the zoom function so it takes great pics.

The HD video is cool too, I just wish it would take the video in a different format than .mov which is a very large file type.

Battery seems to last quite a long time. 300 pics or more.

All-in-all, it's a great compact camera for sticking in your pocket and taking pictures on the fly.

I love the camera. Now I can carry it with me all the time. Takes up hardly any room in my purse. Pictures I have taken have been of excellent quality. My previous camera I was getting quit a few fuzzy pictures. Not sure if it was the camera or me. I am not getting fuzzy pictures now.

5.0 out of 5 stars First digital camera. I'm pretty happy about it., May 7, 2010

This review is from: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP8 12.1MP Digital Camera with 4.6x POWER Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7 inch LCD (Black) (Electronics)
I can't say I know too much about digital cameras so I can't really determine its grade compared to other's on the market. All I can say really is that this was a very inexpensive camera. It's small, portable has a big screen to take pictures with. The picture quality is awesome. Lots of features I barely know what to do with. I didn't buy a memory card with it but that's perfectly fine cause I can just adjust the size of the image and store like(near) 300 pictures on the built in memory alone. For a first camera I imagine I couldn't of picked up a better make and model for this price.

Only thing I've noticed is that when you zoom with the thing, because it's a digital zoom, it causes a bit of blur if you move it around too much but it stabalizes pretty quickly.
