From the Manufacturer

The DMC-FX8 features a 2.5-inch diagonal high-resolution LCD monitor--surprisingly large for such a compact camera. This high-quality, 207,000-pixel display makes it easy to see your subject. For easier viewing when shooting outdoors on a sunny day, press the Power LCD button to boost the backlighting by about 40%.

Easy-to-See, Easy-to-Understand LCD Indications
In addition to displaying the settings in large, easy-to-understand text, the large, 2.5-inch diagonal screen lets you show up to 25 thumbnail images at once. This makes it easier to search for and organize the photos you take.

Stunning High-Speed AF in a Slim Body
Select the AF setting from Spot, 1-point (normal or high-speed), 3-point high-speed, and 5-point. The 1-point normal setting solves the "image-freezing" that used to happen while focusing on fast-moving subjects, and makes them easier to track. Furthermore, the new 1-point high-speed mode slashes conventional AF time to about 1/3. High-speed auto focusing has finally come to the compact digital camera. Plus, the AF Assist Lamp helps when focusing in low lighting.

Super-Fast Shutter Response and Mega Burst Consecutive Shooting
Thanks to the Venus Engine Plus's release time lag of only 0.008 second, the FX8 is super-fast. You can snap consecutive shots at 3 frames per second with full resolution. And with Unlimited Consecutive Shooting, you can keep shooting until the memory card is full.

Leica DC Vario-Elmarit Lens with 3x Optical Zoom
This slim camera features a 3x optical zoom lens (35mm equivalent: 35 to 105mm) with 7 elements in 6 groups, including 3 aspherical lenses. The Extended Optical Zoom, which minimizes the image degradation that normally occurs with digital zooming, gives you up to 4x zooming power. Plus, you can use the 3x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom together to produce a maximum of 12x zooming power.

Flexible Shooting to Match the Scene
Moving-Image Mode
Enjoy smooth moving pictures complete with sound. Even in dimly lit situations, a new 9-pixel mixed readout method produces bright VGA-size (640 x 480-pixel) moving images at 30 frames per second on large-screen TVs.

Scene Mode
The FX8 features 12 scene modes that can be selected according to the shooting conditions. Pressing the left of the cursor button opens a help screen that explains what each mode is for.

More Functions, More Shots

  • Auto Angle Detection rotates vertical shots 90 degrees for easier viewing when connecting with an AV cable. This function may not work on some TV/LCD monitors.
  • Economy Mode turns off an idle LCD to save battery power. (Selectable between "Level 1" and "Level 2.")
  • PictBridge-Compatible for direct printer connection
What's in the Box

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Choice in an Ultra Compact - Don't Overlook this One!, February 9, 2006
By
In my opionion, the Panasonic DMC-FX8 and FX9 are the best choices in the ultra compact camera category. I have owned a couple of the Canon SD cameras (SD200 and SD300) and the pictures produced by the FX7/8/9 are vastly superior, esp. with Indoor Shots. The Image Stabilization really helps in Indoor, Low-Light Settings which if you are like me, is where you take the majority of your snapshots. The Canon SD500/550 are arguably better cameras due to their bigger sensor, 7 MPs, and stronger flash BUT they are not small enough to toss into my front pocket (a pre-requisite). As for the cracked LCD screens, google "Canon and Cracked LCD Screen". It is not an isolated problem! The best precaution you can take is two-fold. Buy a LCD screen protector as well as a hard camera case (I review one of each btw).

Finally, the FX8/FX9 have corrected the two major complaints people had with the very popular and well-regarded DMC-FX7. They now boast a faster AF, a longer-lasting battery and 640x480 Movie Mode. If they had manual controls, they would have created the elusive "perfect ultra compact" camera!

1.0 out of 5 stars Watch out for the screen!!!!, February 7, 2006
This review is from: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX8K 5MP Digital Camera with 3x Image Stabilized Optical Zoom (Black) (Electronics)
The camera it self is very nice, i loved it while it lasted.... which is where the problem is. I had this camera for one month before the screen in the back cracked. There are many other people who have also had this problems and it is expensive to fix. For some reason the protection of the screen is very weak and needs to be upgraded for this camera to really be worth the risk.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not predictable, March 3, 2006
This review is from: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX8K 5MP Digital Camera with 3x Image Stabilized Optical Zoom (Black) (Electronics)
I have this camera and am taking it back tomorrow. It can take good pictures but it also takes terrible pictures. I never know which it's going to be. Tonight I used the same settings for all the pics in the same lighting conditions and half the pictures where good and the other half were very grainy. I've been trying to figure out if I am not setting something correctly and have given up. I didn't buy a little camera to pull out of my pocket and spend forever adjusting settings so I can take a picture. I am very disappointed with this little camera.
