From the Manufacturer

Panasonic's new Lumix DMC-TS10 digital camera is the latest addition to the TS-Series of rugged models, ideal for active users wanting a versatile camera for outdoor use. Featuring a flat, slim profile, and a folded optics design with a 4x optical zoom lens, the new 14.1-megapixel Lumix TS10 is waterproof to approximately 10 feet, shockproof to 5 feet, dustproof and freezeproof to 14°F. For even further protection, the Lumix TS10 comes with a silicone jacket to help prevent scratches.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS10 Highlights

Intelligent Auto (iA) mode
Panasonic's popular Intelligent Auto (iA) mode makes it easy for anyone to take beautiful photos by offering a full suite of shooting-assist functions. The Lumix TS10 makes it extremely easy for consumers to engage this setting, with a dedicated iA button on the top of the camera. The MEGA O.I.S. helps reduce blur due to hand-shake and the Intelligent ISO control prevents a moving subject from being blurred by optimizing the shutter speed and ISO sensitivity setting, to produce sharp, clear images. Human faces are captured in focus and with correct exposure using the Face Detection mode and unwanted red-eyes are digitally corrected and backlight compensation automatically adjusted.

Intelligent Scene Selector
Intelligent Scene Selector automatically selects one of six Scene Modes--Macro, Portrait, Scenery, Night Portrait, Night Scenery and Sunset--that best suits the shooting situation. The Quick AF system allows the camera to keep focus on the subject while the camera is in recording mode even before pressing a shutter button halfway.

High Definition video in 720p Motion JPG
The Lumix TS10 can also shoot High Definition video in 720p Motion JPG and the image-processing Venus Engine IV features advanced signal processing technology for rendering high-quality images and videos. The camera's quick response makes it easier to capture sudden, spur-of-the-moment photo opportunities.

2.7-inch Intelligent LCD
The Panasonic Lumix TS10 features an easy-to-see, 2.7-inch 230,000-dot Intelligent LCD for comfortable viewing while both monitoring shots and playing back the results. The Intelligent LCD function detects the light condition and automatically boosts the LCD backlighting by 40% when shooting outdoors in bright sunshine, and adjusts the frame rate when shooting in low-lit situations. Detecting the lighting condition precisely and automatically controlling the brightness with a total of 11 fine steps, this function gives the display the most appropriate clarity in any situation without using extra energy. The High-Angle mode makes the LCD screen extremely easy to view when the camera is held high, such as when shooting over a crowd.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Waterproof, Point & Shoot Camera!! April 27, 2011
By Luigi

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS10, when compared to other waterproof point & shoot cameras, is an excellent choice! I've used a number of Olympus "Tough" cameras (6000, 8000, etc.) and the Panasonic competes more than admirably.

Shutter lag seems to be a nagging issue with most waterproof, point & shoot cameras. I find the DMC-TS10 has very little shutter lag--signficantly less than any waterproof, point & shoot Olympus I've used. I can't tell you how irritating and frustrating it is to push the shutter and have a camera wait 1/2 to 1 second before it responds.

The menu is much more intuitive and less "layered" than the Olympus cameras. One nice feature is the ability to take a picture at any time regardless where you are in the menu system. A simple, light touch of the shutter button brings you immediately into picture taking mode no matter where you are in the menu system.

Picture quality is very good to excellent. It won't compete with a digital SLR, but it is definitely above average in the waterproof, point & shoot category. Battery life is also very good. I was able to shoot almost 45 minutes of 720 HD video before the battery exhausted. Note: you can only shoot approx. 8 min. of continuous video before you must start again. Also, inexpensive aftermarket batteries are available; however, they must be "firmware" compatible with the DMC-TS10, otherwise they will not work. As of this writing I was not able to determine the number of pictures that can be taken on one battery charge.

The DMC-TS10 comes with an attractive silicone case that does an excellent job of protecting the camera both in and out of the water.

Bottom line: Takes good snapshots if conditions are "just so" (bright but not harsh sunlight), even in the pool.

What I liked:

- It keeps working even when it's wet.

- iA (Intelligent Automatic) mode, where the camera automatically selects among six of the more common scene modes.

- The documentation is clear and complete. That applies to both the manual (provided electronically) and the information provided on-camera.

What I didn't like:

- Images at any ISO (sensitivity) setting are noisy (fuzzy). They get very noisy at all but the lowest settings.

- Zoom DOES NOT work when shooting videos.

- It takes five button presses to go between taking pictures and movies.

Other things:

- This camera DOES NOT FIT in the Case Logic TBC-302 Ultra Compact Camera Case with Storage (Black). However, the Case Logic TBC-312 Pocket Video Camcorder Case with Storage (Black) works fine. (I have both.)

- Watch the price. I've seen it fluctuate on an almost daily basis. The black version is particularly susceptible to price dips; I got mine for 66% of list.

- A spare battery is good to have with a digital camera. This is especially with this one becuase the battery life is on the short side. Amazon has plenty of inexpensive aftermarket choices such as the MaximalPower DMW-BCH7 Li-Ion Rechargeable Digital Camera Battery for Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP1 DMC-FP2 DMC-FP3 DMC-FT10 DMC-TS10.

3.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the armchair adventurist February 23, 2011

I'm using waterproof cameras for over 20 years now. Primary use is kayaking / canoeing / hiking, often multi day trips.

This is a surprisingly small camera, easy to use and it takes great pictures. Took over 3000 pictures so far and the vast majority of them came out very good. Indoor flash pictures are a little bit iffy, without flash and a steady hand they usually turn out great. The "high speed burst mode" is amazing for a point and shoot camera and takes around 4 pictures a second (at a reduced 3 megapixel resolution). Overall picture quality in the normal 14 MP mode is very good and compares well to the Canon 1300 IS. The "intelligent auto" is reasonable good, but it is also easy to setup preferences.

There are two things I don't like at all on this camera, the small, proprietary battery and the proprietary USB connector.

The cell phone market finally agreed to use the same, standard USB connector, there is no reason why Panasonic couldn't do the same. A replacement USB cable from Panasonic retails for over $30. At least the camera is using a standard SD card, so if the USB cable is lost, it is not such a big deal to plug the SD card directly into the laptop, but again, I can't think about a technical reason why this camera has to use a proprietary USB connector.

The small "DMW-BCH7" battery is more of an issue. The strong point on the camera is the rugged, waterproof design. There are several pages in the manual that emphasis how important it is to keep the waterproof seals around the battery compartment intact. Even a small brush is included to clean the gaskets. Obviously, any small piece of dirt or even just a hair caught in the seals will compromise the waterproof design.
