I recently purchased the Panasonic DMP-B200 portable Blu-ray Disc player from Amazon.com. The DMP-B200 is a Profile 1.1 BD player--so no BD-Live feature. This is a great product at a great price. I have long been a fan of Panasonic portable disc products. I purchased Panasonic's DVD-L10 back in the late 1990s, then the DVD-LX97 in 2007, and then finally upgraded to portable Blu-ray this year with the DMP-B200. Like the DVD-LX97, the DMP-B200 seems better at playing home-recorded discs than many other brands (at least in my experience). It plays DVD-R/+R/-RW/+RW/RAM and the dual-layer discs. It also plays BD-R/-RE and dual-layer Blu-rays as well. The screen resolution is much better than the LX97, although the screen size is the same--a hair under 9". The DMP-B200 screen is not HD, but could be characterized as ED--Extended Definition. This means you can still tell the difference between Blu-rays and DVDs in terms of picture quality. The DMP-B200 seems to be more robustly built than the old LX97 and the battery is handy too. The B200 can serve as your main BD player if you already do not own a BD player in your home theater system (I've got a Panasonic DMP-BD30). This is because the B200 has a remote control and an HDMI output so that you can route your picture to any HDTV at full 1080p. You can also route the audio to any compatible surround sound receiver (Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD, etc.). The DMP-B200 has all the picture "tweaking" controls you could ever want. You can adjust the picture on the 9" screen as you would your regular TV (brightness, contrast, tint, etc.). There is one headphone jack (contrary to some reviews on the internet saying that the B200 had two headphone jacks).Read more ›

I read a blog that posed the question: why would anyone want a Blu-ray player when there are so many great download options, today? The answer is: while traveling it can't be beat. I just came back from a trip to Europe and the DMP-B200 was flawless. My son was able to watch both Blu-Ray and DVD's. It is worth a premium not to be concerned about which format a disk happens to be. I was starting to buy both for each movie: Blu-Ray for home and DVD for trips, but that is crazy. It's true that you can watch a lot of movies on NetFlix and other services, but downloads are still not available, everywhere. Most people don't have an unlimited wireless plan and, especially in Europe, even wired Internet may not be available.

The only minus for this unit is the lack of two headphone jacks. If you have two kids who want to watch at the same time then you might consider a different unit. I did connect a Jambox to the single output for group watching it worked well.

Do Blu-Ray disks look a lot better on such a small screen? Yes, a little, but the real advantage is being able to play both formats. Also, it can be used as a player for a big screen (via HDMI), but I didn't use that feature....

This is an excellent Blu-ray Portable. It is extremely versatile with the screen design. The picture quality on the unit itself and playing through my LED TV was equally excellent. What I really like about this screen is that the viewing angle is much better than other units I tried. I do not think you can go wrong with Panasonic.

I had their previous DVD model and it still works great after 8 yrs! The battery still goes for 6-7 hrs and the screen is still great and the sound is great. After getting such a great product from Panasonic the first time, we decided to upgrade to the Bluray player since most of our movies and tv shows are on Bluray. This model is also amazing! Even tho the battery doesn't last as long as the DVD version, the screen is nice and big and bright! The speakers aren't as good as the old model, as when you turn the volume up, the speakers start to pop and crackle. We mainly use headphones so this is not a huge issue. The new thing we absolutely love is the remote control that comes with it! It has quite a few buttons and we don't know what all of them do yet, it does make it easy for when you need to pause, fast forward, rewind, change display settings, etc... The neat little thing I didn't know it had is the HDMI out! It actually becomes a high definition Bluray player you can take anywhere and hook up to any tv that has an HDMI input. We went on vacation with this and this made a huge difference on the long drives between stops and at the resort, as the resort still only had a DVD player. The new menu is quite easy to navigate thru as well. We also like the way the screen tilts and even almost folds flat for easy viewing on your lap. If you are looking for a great portable Bluray/DVD player, look no further and just order this one. I only gave it four stars as the speakers were a bit of a let down from the previous model.

I got this for my kids to watch on long drives (will pause for people to yell at me for giving my kids video in back of car). It works great, my kids (6&8) can use it without me helping them, which is a major plus, and the video quality is what you need.

I never tried hooking this up to my tv, so can't comment on that, but as a portable player, it works.
