It's the original, and now for a fair price,

The bottom line about the BCG10PP: It's identical to the one that ships with the Panasonic ZS3 and behaves just like it.
On buying the BCG10PP: In mid-June, when I needed a spare battery for my Panny ZS3 (because the camera's battery life is so-so and I didn't want to run out of juice with no backup at hand), the BCG10PP was nearly impossible to find. Panasonic.com didn't sell them, and none of the resellers the site recommended had them in stock. I ended up finding it on Amazon, via one third-party reseller. Since he seemed to be the only one on the planet to carry the battery, I was charged (no pun intended) an arm and a leg for it. Supply and demand, they call this phenomenon. I'm happy to see more resellers now have this battery in stock and the price has come down significantly. I hope it continues like this and that soon it'll be very easy to find. One word of advice: If you're planning to get a cheaper third-party battery (a BCG10PP compatible model, but not manufactured by Panasonic), do not update the ZS3's firmware. The update addresses original vs. not original batteries and you'll only be able to use the Panasonic battery after installing it.

Like others, I was sent the wrong battery!,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
As you will see from several other reviews, the battery that ships is not the one featured on the page. I instead received the DMW-BCG10 from the outside merchant, Inspiretech / Clear AV. It has to be returned to the merchant, not Amazon, and the merchant claims they will not refund shipping. I am assuming Amazon will refund my shipping, then, because I am certainly not paying for their error, and may I add an error that CONTINUES to exist after others have experienced the same fraud. This is an unnecessary hassle I have to deal with now, because Amazon didn't handle it after the first person experienced the screw-up. Thanks a lot.

Alert vendor canceled this transaction,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
As others have noted, Panasonic is updating the firmware for many of its cameras to prevent the use of non-Panasonic batteries. Even though the description and photo for this item indicate that it's a genuine Panasonic product, it isn't. It's a generic battery, and the vendor emailed to inform me of this before shipping. After exchanging a few more emails with me, the vendor decided he didn't want to take the chance of shipping me a product that might not work, so he unilaterally canceled the order and refunded my money.
At first, I was annoyed ... but in retrospect I appreciated the vendor's initiative in canceling an order that most customers would have ultimately had to return. Use caution when buying batteries for recent Panasonic products, not just the ZS3. Verify that the firmware you have (or are willing to downgrade to) allows the use of generic batteries. Annoyingly enough, genuine Panasonic batteries are in very short supply. In fact, I haven't been able to find them in stock anywhere.

THIS BATTERY CANNOT BE USED,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
That's what your camera will say after you fully charge this battery and insert it. THIS BATTERY IS A FRAUD. It comes in a Panasonic Package, it says Panasonic on it, but the firmware doesn't lie. THIS IS FRAUD. AMAZON SHOULD PULL THIS COMPANY FROM THE SITE IMMEDIATELY.

Not as advertised,

This is a BCG10E, not a BCG10PP like the picture and description. At best it's a gray market battery (included instructions in every language but English), at worst it's a counterfeit. The markings on the battery are completely different from the one that came with my Lumix ZS3, and they are completely different from the picture shown. Buyer beware!

Wrong battery!,

Update - though the wrong battery, the seller was very prompt about full refund along with a prepaid shipping label.
Expected & was very clear about ordering a DMW-BCG10PP (via Inspiretech), received a DMW-BCG10E. This battery DOES NOT work with the new DMC-ZS3! Even spent 45 minutes on the phone with 3 different Panasonic departments to make sure.

Battery from Good-As-New works with the new LUMIX DMC-ZS7 !!,

4/9/10 (re-write)- So after buying this battery from Vortex Cable and having to return it because it did not work with my new DMC-ZS7 (as several other ZS7 owners have recently had to do), I ordered one from Good-As-New Electronics (after they assured me they carry only Panasonic batteries). Works like a charm! They are the real deal from Panasonic. No more "this battery cannot be used" messages on your screen!!!
Maybe the following info will help. This is the reply I received from Good-As-New on 4/2/10 when I inquired about the authenticity of the battery they supply. "...we received our latest shipment from Panasonic, so I would assume they are the latest version available." When I asked if they always buy directly from Panasonic, their reply was: "Always. Everything we sell comes directly from its respective manufacturer - no exceptions. To the best of my understanding, there aren't any alternate versions of this model" [referring to my question about 'version problems' mentioned by Vortex]. "There are however a vast supply of imitations / 'knock-off' brands. Perhaps the version matters on one of those units? After a bit more research, I am comfortable in saying that the DMW-BCG10 we are selling will be compatible with the new DMC-ZS7, to the point where I believe that even if you had one of these batteries from a year ago, it would still work just fine in the new camera. As I told you before, we did just get our new supply of these batteries in last week, so these will most certainly work just fine." And it does!!! So just to be safe, I would buy from Good-As-New. There could be others who sell the 'real' Panasonic battery, but it was way too much work just trying to find this one! Perhaps it would be a good idea if reviewers would mention the seller's name in their reviews, making it easier to tell who's selling the real Panasonic batteries and who's not. Quite a few reviewers said this battery works with their ZS3, but the ZS3 is not the ZS7 (apparently Panasonic has snuck in a little security feature recently that rejects fake batteries!). And if the battery I buy doesn't work with the ZS7, then it's not a real Panasonic (the 'real' Panasonic battery works with both models). Frankly, I don't care if Vortex's 'version' issues are resolved with their undisclosed 'vendor' (obviously NOT Panasonic). I want what was advertised on Amazon and what I paid for - a REAL Panasonic battery. The fact that Amazon isn't screening their sellers better and therefore causing all this confusion among potential buyers is appauling! Well I hope this clears it up. Thank you, Good-As-New Electronics, for staying honest!

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 Battery,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I was disappointed when I first opened up the package because the battery that was delivered was not the battery that was displayed in the vendor's ad, and it was not the battery that came with the camera (I ordered the DMW-BCG10PP and received the DMW-BCG10). I contacted Panasonic, however, and they told me that the two batteries were the same. So far, I have not noticed any difference in performance, but I doubt I will buy from this vendor again. I am not sure that I can trust a vendor that does not disclose that the product shipped will be different than the product displayed and ordered, even if the products are functionally identical.

Panasonic battery monopoly,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Panasonic DMW-BCG10 ID Secured Battery for Select Panasonic Cameras (Retail Packaging) (Electronics)
Panasonic screwed its Lumix ZS3 customers by creating a firmware fix that doesn't allow the use of any battery except this one in the Lumix ZS3. And this camera eats batteries!
Then, Panasonic didn't make enough of these "official" batteries to meet the demand - resulting in a restricted supply and high prices. On November 15th, 2009 I ordered a Lumix ZS3 from Amazon along with this battery, in order to have an extra one on hand. I received a notice from Amazon that nothing would be delivered until Jan 15th, 2010 because the battery was out of stock. Great! So, I had to call Amazon and cancel the battery order or I wouldn't even get the camera for two months. Then, in order to have a spare battery, I had to order from another source and pay a higher price as well as shipping.

short battery life between charges,

This review is from: Panasonic DMW-BCG10 ID Secured Battery for Select Panasonic Cameras (Retail Packaging) (Electronics)
Awful battery with very short battery life before it needs recharging. Unfortunately because the Lumix ZS3 is unable to take generic batteries there is little you can do but purchase an expensive Panasonic spare battery (or 2), plus a car charger. This is still not helpful when you are out in the outback of Australia away from electricity supply and not using your car. It meant missing out on a number of never to be replaced photos. The added difficulty for me was getting a spare battery in the first place as there were no stockists of this battery in Darwin Australia. It meant I had to order a battery from Amazon. Unfortunately this did not arrive in time for my trip through the centre of Australia to Adelaide, hence the missed photo opportunities. (This was not fault of Amazon - the order time was just too short - it arrived days after my departure) The camera itself is terrific however, I would not have purchased this camera if I had the prior knowledge about the crummy battery. (My sons camera using ordinary Lithium batteries lasted for days and days rather that the two odd hours this battery lasts between charges)
