Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Panasonic's DVD-LA95 offers the versatility of a portable DVD player alongside the performance of a sophisticated home-theater component--and you can use it as both. The player handles DVD-Video, high-resolution DVD-Audio, and DVD-RAM playback--as well as standard and recordable CDs, including MP3-encoded discs. Its slender chassis holds a massive, 9-inch widescreen (16:9) LCD screen and a built-in rechargeable battery (good for about 2.5 hours between charges).

Designed to take full advantage of both audio and traditional video DVD formats, the DVD-LA95 delivers the immersive six-channel surround sound of the DVD-Audio music format. DVD-Audio offers super high-fidelity (192 kHz/24-bit) sound, in both multichannel and stereo. Because the DVD-Audio signal is too high-resolution for the digital converters in current surround receivers (and also as an anti-piracy measure), the DVD-LA95 performs its own decoding of DVD-Audio signals, passing high-resolution analog, not digital, audio to your surround receiver. This means you'll need an audio/video receiver with multichannel analog-audio inputs to appreciate this feature.

Audio features include DTS and Dolby Digital decoding with 5.1-channel analog- and digital-audio outputs, built-in stereo speakers, and Dialogue Enhancer for DVD movie viewing (which boosts the center-channel level by 6 dB during playback of Dolby Digital 5.1 discs, since most of the principal dialogue is channeled there). Advanced Surround Sound (VSS) simulates surround effects from any two speakers or from headphones. Other features include chapter preview, high-speed smooth-motion scan in forward and reverse (up to 100 times normal speed), repeat mode, title/chapter search with marker function, skip forward/reverse, auto power off, and resume play.

In addition to playing favorite DVD movie and music discs, the DVD-LA95 also plays video recorded on DVD-RAMs. DVD-RAM lets you record high-quality MPEG-2 video on DVDs, offering fast data transmission, speedy random access to chapters, and rewritability up to 100,000 times.

From the Manufacturer

Bringing together the most advanced digital audio and video technologies, the DVD-LA95 offers the versatility of a portable and the high-quality performance of a sophisticated home-theater component. The unique DVD-LA95 is the world's first portable DVD player that accommodates DVD Video, DVD-Audio, DVD-RAM, CDs, MP3, CD-R, and CD-RW. The unit features a 9-inch LCD screen--the largest of any portables at the time of its release--and a built-in rechargeable battery.

Designed to take full advantage of the DVD format in both video and its newer dedicated audio incarnation, DVD-Audio, the versatile DVD-LA95 delivers the incredible six-channel surround sound of the new DVD-Audio format--the closest thing possible to experiencing a live performance.

To realize the full potential of DVD-Audio, the DVD-LA95 features a 192kHz/24-bit audio DAC (digital-to-analog converter). The DVD-Audio format offers storage capacity about seven times that of a CD, dynamic range reaching a theoretical high of 144 dB (versus 96 dB for CD), and a frequency response stretching all the way to 96 kHz. Using linear PCM for all six discrete channels, DVD-Audio delivers astounding fidelity.

For home theater enjoyment, other audio features include built-in DTS and Dolby Digital decoding with a 5.1-channel analog audio output for surround sound enjoyment through a compatible surround receiver, built-in speakers, and Dialogue Enhancer for DVD movie viewing. This last feature boosts the volume of the center channel, from which most principal dialogue emanates, for movies that feature Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.

For complete audio enjoyment, the DVD-LA95 plays MP3 files recorded on CD-R/RW media, commercially produced CDs, and home-recorded CD-R and CD-RW discs. (It may not be able to play some CD-R or CD-RW due to the condition of the recording.)

A built-in, 9-inch LCD screen is ideal for watching DVD movies "on the go." The DVD-LA95 delivers a stunningly beautiful picture in 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio. A 10-bit video DAC minimizes digital artifacts for optimal picture quality.

Other features include chapter preview; high-speed, five-step smooth motion scan (in forward and reverse); up to 100 times normal speed with an easy-to-use shuttle ring dial; repeat mode; title/chapter search with marker function; skip forward/reverse; and auto power off/resume play.

In addition to playing favorite DVD movie discs, the DVD-LA95 plays video recorded on DVD-RAM discs. (DVD-RAM is a new recordable, rewritable DVD format, sanctioned by the DVD Forum, developed to fuse A/V and PC applications. DVD-RAM lets you record high-quality MPEG-2 video onto DVD discs. The format offers fast data transmission, random access, and rewritability up to 100,000 times.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product, October 14, 2003

This review is from: Panasonic DVD-LA95 9-Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
I purchased this product primarily for use by my 4-year-old daughter so she can stay occupied when we take long flights. I have only used it for one such case so far, in which we flew to Mexico from Seattle, but I was very impressed at Panasonic's execution with this DVD player. (Note that there is a newer unit, the DVD-LX9, available from Panasonic that has progressive scanning technology and stand-alone speakers, but it is also significantly more expensive and probably not worth it given the typical use cases of a portable DVD player.) The LA95 basically does everything right. For example, it has good sound quality and a more than sufficient amplifier so both the external speakers and headphones actually work reasonably. (Most portable devices have lousy external speakers and some even suffer from poor volume level even with headphones.) It also has a very clean picture and I saw no instances of pixelation or other bad DVD processing artifacts as I played with the forward and reverse controls. The best thing, though, was the optional extended life battery (the CGP-H501A). It lasts for up to 10 hours of DVD play: on one charge, we flew to Mexico and back, playing multiple movies in both directions, and I used it to watch two movies while in Mexico, and the battery pack is not all that heavy or obtrusive. If you're looking for a very strong portable DVD player, you will definitely not be disappointed if you purchase the DVD-LA95. Just be sure to purchase the extended life battery (there is an H502 also, but that has a *lower* life than the H501 - get the H501) and you might want to pick up a headphone jack splitter so you can have more than one person listen in with headphones.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag, November 12, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Panasonic DVD-LA95 9-Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
panasonic definitely cut a few corners in producing their latest portable. the fit and finish of the la-95 is much improved over last year's dvd-lv75. however, the 9-inch screen, although larger, is of poorer quality. images aren't as sharp or as bright as on the older model's 7-inch screen (the older screen is truly and engineering marvel). my guess is that the pixel-count was not increased along with screen size to reduce manufacturing costs. when using headphones, annoying reverberations could be heard while listening to certain voices on some DVDs. another design flaw is found in the orientation of the LCD screen itself. the screen goes very dark when you try to view it from an open angle, leaving you with a much smaller viewing radius than with the older machine, which was manufactured with the pixels reflecting in the opposite direction.

the dvd-la95 is a very pretty gadget to look at, but falls short on video and audio performance. (...)

panasonic, if you're listening, your next model should combine the fit and finish of the dvd-la95 with the screen quality of the dvd-lv75 without the background audio artifacts and reverberation problems associated with either.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST BUY!!!!, October 20, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Panasonic DVD-LA95 9-Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
The 9" screen cannot be beat. Although I must admit that the sound and the picture quality on the Sharp 8" player (which is cheaper) is moderately better, the LA-95 is overall the best portable player. It also does not get any sleeker than this. It is very easy to use, extremely light, and has the best collection of portable accessories of any new players (many of the older Panasonic model's accessories work with the LA-95). After all - if I am going to watch a DVD movie at home - why wouldn't I watch from my big screen TV? I recommend getting the optional battery pack CGP-H501... and/or the the XTend airline power adapter if you plan on (as I do) using on long trips to keep your children occupied. I am not sure, though, if I will ever need to play any of those other formats (what exactly is DVD-RAM?). By the way - cartoons look the best and color sci fi the worst.
