Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Panasonic's DVD-LV50 is a full-featured DVD-CD player compatible with DVD-RAM and DVD-R discs as well as with MP3 CDs. The player offers a built-in widescreen LCD monitor that uses approximately 337,000 pixels for clear DVD images on the go. The 5-inch screen lets you watch movies in the standard 16:9 widescreen format or conventional 4:3 formats such as letterbox and pan-and-scan. The screen's Freestyle design makes it easy to adjust it to many angles to suit a range of viewing positions.

Use normal, full, or zoom mode to adjust the picture size displayed on the LV50's screen to best represent the picture format (standard 4:3, 16:9 widescreen or letterbox) of the software being viewed. Hi-Speed Smooth Scan scans as high as 200x, so a two-hour movie scans forward or backward in merely 40 seconds--and favorite scenes are found in a jiffy.

The LV50's included rechargeable battery fits neatly in the main unit, so the thin, stylish body remains intact when using the battery. The battery holds out for about 2.5 hours of viewing time (with the brightness set to its lowest level) before it has to be recharged. An optical digital-audio output passes DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound for hookup with a surround-decoding audio-video receiver, providing six discrete channels of exhilarating digital audio that deliver the ultimate sound experience. Advanced Surround (V.S.S) simulates surround sound using only the front two speakers, so you can enjoy Dolby Digital 5.1-channel discs without an elaborate home theater system.

From Digital Living Today

Digital images, be they still or moving, need to be displayed on a monitor. It's to be expected, then, that a small portable screen that can read CDs, CD-Rs, MP3CDs, VCDs, and DVDs of all kinds would be indispensable. Enter the Panasonic DVD-LV50 Portable DVD Player. Less than an inch thick, this zippy device can decode all kinds of digital media, both moving and still, and display them on a bright 5 inch LCD screen. Take a DVD on an airplane (the battery gives you about two hours of viewing time on a charge). Then pop in your VCD photo album and show your friends your photos. You can even take an MP3 CD along and use the LV50 to play over ten hours of music on one disc. Want to view a bigger image, to share with a group? Just plug the LV50 into any television and watch your movie or scroll through your photos on the larger screen. Forgive the subpar built-in speaker, and you'll realize that in the LV50 you have a high-fidelity mobile entertainment machine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very well designed and thought out product, October 29, 2002

RobbyD (Seattle, WA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Panasonic DVD-LV50 5-Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
This unit was designed with the traveller in mind. Here are some of the excellent features I've observed:
1) LCD display can swivel out forward and lean almost flat against the unit - great for cramped viewing quarters like economy class on an airplane.
2) Can simulate Dolby Digital and DTS effects in your regular headphones. The effect is breathtaking - it's like having a surround sound home theater in your headphones. Action movies never sounded so good.
3) Comes with battery model CGR-H603 which lasted for 2 hours and 26 minutes in my test with the LCD set to factory default brightness and the audio level set to 6 (very loud). You can reduce the brightness to increase the battery life.
4) An optional extended life battery is available (CGR-H601) which in the same test lasted for a whopping 4 hours and 30 minutes. That's a combined 7 hours of battery life - great for those longer flights.
5) When the battery dies in the middle of a movie, simply pop in another charged battery and the player will automatically continue the movie from the point where the first battery died. Very convenient.
6) Lightweight! This unit is very light and portable.
7) The 5 inch screen is very easy to watch. The size is not a limiting factor as you quickly get lost in the movie and even forget you're viewing a small screen.
8) This player supports 16:9 letterbox (widescreen) and 4:3 boxed modes.
9) Comes with a full featured remote control.
10) This unit can be hooked up to a TV or home theater receiver with the included RCA/Composite cable.
11) Options include car lighter adapter, cassette adapter, optical cables and more.

Overall, this is the best portable DVD player I have ever been exposed to. It's quality built and small enough for serious travel. ....

5.0 out of 5 stars Little Wonder, July 15, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Panasonic DVD-LV50 5-Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
I got this a few weeks ago and have used it a lot. I took it on a crosscountry trip for a week too. It's been a marvel. I found myself on vacation shopping for more widescreen dvd's! I have had absolutely no trouble with it. The speakers are built it but due to it's size you can't get the real effect of stereo without earphones, but I prefer the earphones anyway. The battery lasts longer if you use the earphones too. Great stereo sound with them and a wonderful high quality picture. I thought the fact that the screen is small might bug me but it doesn't, the clarity is so beautiful that you forget the size and get lost in it.
My next purchase is the cable so I can use it as a DVD with my TV and see movies that way too. I am so glad I made this purchase!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Buy, January 15, 2003
This review is from: Panasonic DVD-LV50 5-Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
I bought this DVD for my family this Christmas. It was the best buy of the season. It has already paid for itself in entertain-
ment hours. The picture is GREAT. The sound is wonderful. We have taken it on the road with us and hooked it up to the t.v. in the hotel room. There have been times when we have used this instead of our home DVD. The only thing I have not tried is the battery.
I read all the reviews on this item and others. Everything I read in the reviews were right on target. I am glad I bought this DVD. Price did play a role in my purchase. I wanted to spend around 300 - 400.00 dollars. I did not look at too many DVD's that were higher. But for the money I am very happy.
