A great "plays everything" portable,
By A Customer
This review is from: Panasonic DVD-LV60 5.8-Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
This unit has got to be the best portable unit ever !!! It plays dvds, vcds of music videos I download from the net and burn on my computer, mp3s (up to 320kbps for sure I can't remember if I have tried vbr though)along with regular audio cds. Both cdr and cdrw are no problem. For the last couple days I've been using this unit in my jeep to play mp3s and it hasn't skipped ONCE in the 5 or 6 hours it's been bobbing up and down on the passenger seat. The connections are about average for a portable: line, optical and headphone audio outs, composite and "s" video outs(you'll need to buy the special s-vid plug from panna,it's not included) the unit also has video in. Although I havn't run it straight through, It seems the manual is pretty close when saying battery life of 4 hours with the screen and 6 with it off. It's a thin, light, unit and the battery pack is a quick snap on and off. Of course the proof is in the pudding and you can tell panasonic has been doing this portable thing for awhile. The picture is excellent on the 5.8" screen and the sound is fantastic on everything, I was especially inpressed with mp3s, the decoder is top notch. If there is any downside it's the lack of a 7 inch screen but I don't mind it especially considering the added value of mp3,vcd playback.this thing is in a class by itself !

Incredible Product - questionable casing,

First of all, the screen is great. Disregard those who say the screen is too dark or too light, you can adjust the brightness from +5 to -5 levels. Color is adjustable too. I can find no dead pixels either. The sound through the built-in speakers is adequate but not impressive. The sound through headphones will blow you away. This VSS (virtual surround sound) stuff ROCKS! One thing that you can't find in reviews, the battery snaps on to the back and NOT the bottom like most others, so the case height isn't affected. This machine also gets HOT on the bottom, I am a little worried about that, the manual says that it can cause BURNS!!! The battery life also lasted a good 4 hours for me on its first charge.THE BAD: The dvd lid seems a bit cheap to me, it warps when you press the top buttons that are built into the lid. The screen has a tendency to whack the drive when you close it, even carefully, and that makes the DVD player skip every time (when I have it hooked up to the TV). All in all, the goods definitely out-weigh the bads. Buy this thing ...

The BEST...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Panasonic DVD-LV60 5.8-Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
This Panasonic LV60 is simply the best unit in its price range. I originally bought the LV70 which has a 7" screen, but only plays DVD's or CD's. The L60 plays DVD's, Video CD's,CD's, CDR's, CDRW's and MP3's!! And the screen is only 1.2" smaller... The sound of the L60 is superb. There's VSS Cinema mode which improves sound thru the center channel. Though I have BOSE noise cancelling headphones and the sound thru them is also superb. The L70 is a wonderful unit as well, but now you're talking a bit pricey. Don't bother checking out the Sony FX-1, you will be disappointed, especially with the sound (what sound?). This L60 is compact, lightweight, comes with battery pack (attaches in such a way as to not make the unit any higher), an AC adapter, video cables, and also comes with a very sleek remote. If you want to pay more than what this unit costs, you're better off getting a laptop! Remember, this is a "portable dvd player". It should be compact, and this one is! A lot of stores are sold out of this product...because it simply is "the best"! Hope this review helps you in your purchase!

A Really Great Portable DVD Player,
By Jacob Green (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Panasonic DVD-LV60 5.8-Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
A few years ago, I noticed the first Panasonic portable DVD player advertised in a magazine. At a hefty [$$$] dollars I knew it was out of my price range. That it, until recently when I saw an advertisement for one at only [$$$] dollars. That was when I decided to purchase one. By that time, there were about twenty models, ranging from the Panasonic LV-50, the oldest model, featuring a 5-inch screen, to the Sharp DVL-80U with an 8-inch screen. Most of these models were not available at stores near me so I could not see them in person. I was able to see the Panasoniv LV-75 and the Panasonic LV-60. The Panasonic LV-60 was the best model I could find for a reasonable price. I was also looking at the LV-75, but I found that the screen quality was lower. The LV-60 sports a 5.8 inch screen, which, while smaller than some models which offer 7 or even 8 inch screens, I found that it worked well in the airplane, and I could see fine. I am very impressed with the screen quality. The colors are vibrant and the shapes are defined. In some places, I could see a few wavy lines in the background, but much less than in the LV-75. I played a variety of movies ranging from Toy Story to Jaws, and that picture quality was excellent and suited my viewing tastes. I want to reemphasize that the 5.8 inch screen (which is measured diagonally, not across) was large enough to be able to see everything, and get involved in the movie. My only complaint would be that I had trouble reading the cast bios in the menu because the print was so small. However, I feel this is a mute point. I thought the sound of the LV-60 was very good. The speakers are not enough to be heard on an airplane. When I watched with my friends on a plane, (we were unable to use headphones because there is only one headphone jack), we were forced to use subtitles to understand the dialogue, we could, however, hear the music and effects, justthe dialogue was hard to understand. However, when I used headphones, everything was loud and clear. The Virtual Surround Sound (V.S.S) option worked very well with some movies, I could hear the helicopter in The Fugitive going over my head, but the V.S.S did not do anything in other movies. There is a dialogue enhancer function but I have not tried it because with headphones it is unnecessary. I was very impressed with the battery length. Panasonic claims the Lithium Ion rechargeable battery lasts four hours on lowers brightness setting. I was skeptical and I thought I would never use the lowest brightness anyway. However, I was able to watch The Fugitive, Jaws, and most of Toy Story, on one charge. That adds up to over five hours. I was watching on minimum brightness, but I have to say that there was very little difference between regular and minimum brightness. I could see the movie fine and there was no problem. It took about five hours to charge the battery, as the manual declares. Please note that you cannot charge the battery while the player is running. While on vacation, I plugged the LV-60 into the T.V in my hotel to see if it worked well. The included cables worked fine in connecting to a T.V. The quality was excellent. The remote worked well and had all the functions of the player itself. I thought the buttons on the player were well conceived. Instead of the jog control seen on the other Panasonic players, the LV-60 has a knob that is used as directional control and the enter button. I also liked the blue highlight on the player, which is featured only on the LV-60. ..." I definitely suggest you shop around on the Internet to find the best price. My recommendation is that you find a store in your area that carries whatever model you are thinking of purchasing so that you can see it, and find out if it works for you. You should also read all the online reviews you can to get an idea of what each model is like. **UPDATE-I have now owned my LV-60 for approx. 6 months and I am still very satisified with its performance. The battery consistantly gives me 4 to 5 hours of viewing time per charge (on lowest brightness setting-it really is not noticeably worse than the middle brightness setting)which has pleased me to no end. The one qualm I have had with this player is the nagging fear that the battery will eventually die ( the manual claims it lasts 300 uses but I somehow doubt it). I heard tales of 300 dollar spare batteries which worried me. However, In recent websurfing, I discovered that the price for a spare battery is now only [$$$]dollars. This is still a little pricey but it beats out the other Panasonic models's battery prices by at least [$$$] dollars. I only mention this to keep possible buyers from being mislead into believing that spare batteries are overwhelmingly expensive. I wish all of you luck in finding the right player

Awsome little gadget,

I looked for MONTHs to find the perfect portable DVD player. One that combined quality, size, durability, and aforibility. I came out with this one, and I'm very happy with my choice. The picture quality isn't perfect, but I don't really know what to compare it too. It was very easy to work. I took it right out of the box, plugged it in, and watched a movie. (If you're watching a movie with no battery it uses the wall outlet as its power source, if you're not watching a movie, it charges the battery) The only problem, even though its very small, was that I had trouble getting the battery in the remote! And unfortunately the remote doesn't have a volume control... but its not THAT terrible. This comes with a cord to plug the player into your TV, and the quality of this is just as good as any other DVD player. Another thing I like about this player is that is allows you to write VCDs and play them. Many players have copyright locks and don't allow this. But because of this, I can burn VCDs of home videos and play them on my DVD player! Its great... In conclusion, this is the perfect player for just about anyone. There are a few kinks, and the screen isn't as big as some of the other players... But so much makes up for those little things that you won't care about any of it. Great job Panasonic!

Good looking, good value, and great performance,

I spent several weeks pondering whether to buy a portable DVD player and then took the plunge two weeks ago. For me, this seemed the best combination of portability, price, features, and performance -- and I haven't been disappointed. The screen is bright and the sound is excellent (when listened to via headphones; the speakers are OK). The unit has some features that may not initially be apparent. For example, (1) you can turn on a setting to make it emphasize dialog, (2) it will read CD-RWs, and (3) it "remembers" where you were on the DVD, even if you've removed it -- so you can watch a DVD on the plane, remove the DVD before landing, reinsert it at the hotel, and the scene starts exactly where you left off. The LV-60 is well engineered, thoughtfully designed, and a pleasure to use -- in short, definitely worth considering if you're thinking of buying a portable DVD player.

Having had the Panasonic DVD-LV60 for a few weeks, I'm very satisfied with the product. Good battery length and lightweight. However, beware that there are two versions of this player. One has MP3 playback and one does not. There are no clear distinctions between the two, so be sure to check carefully!

Perfect Dual Use DVD Player,
By Henry C. Kevane (San Francisco, California USA) - See all my reviews

I wasn't sure that this portable DVD player would also serve as an in-home player but the connectability and features are exactly what one might expect from a console player, particularly if you're not making a huge home theater investment. This is a perfect, easy to use and seemingly durable (I've only had it for a week) player. The downside appears to be that accessories, available directly from Panasonic, are proportionately more expensive than the player itself. Example -- spare battery was (just slightly under three figures) from Panasonic.

My wife gave me this DVD player as a gift for the holidays. I was really surprised. I've gone on several business trips with it and have truly loved having it with me. The picture is very sharp. The unit is small, about the size of a walkman or so. The battery lasts around 4 and one half hours, or enough for two average movies. I've dropped it twice now with no damage. The sound is pretty good without earphones and very good with earphones (none come with the unit which is my only complaint). The remote works great. And since the unit plugs into my home TV, the Panasonic DVD-LV60 doubles as my home DVD player as well! In short, it is lightweight yet durable with a sharp picture and very good sound. A terrific item!
