My old DVD player started malfunctioning, so it was time for a replacement. I had already tried Amazon's somewhat less-expensive Sony player, which was okay, but I wanted something slightly better. This progressive-scan DVD player offers stereo and surround sound and both composite or component video output. It can be configured to match just about any analog video display, but comes already configured for standard, American, analog TV sets. It also has a USB port on the front of it, for which I don't believe most people would have much use.

It loads video disks quickly, is easy to control with the included remote, remembers where it was playing a DVD when turned off, and has been able to play any disks that I've loaded into it. I tested commercial movies, copies of commercial videos and DVD videos that I've created myself and they have all played just fine.

For someone with a high-definition, large-screen TV set there are better but more expensive choices such as the Sony BDP-S185 Blu-Ray Disc Player. However, for someone who wants an affordable, simple-to-use DVD player for a standard analog TV set, this player is well-priced, is reasonably compact and is easy to use. I'm definitely pleased with my purchase and believe, after shopping at several locations, that this player represents a good value for the money. I recently bought a 32" flat-screen LED HDTV, connected this player to its component video inputs, expecting little, and was delighted with the result.

***NOTE*** On the Web display for this DVD player under "Frequently Bought Together" an HDMI cable is erroneously recommended. This player does NOT have an HDMI connection.

Initially, I had planned to write a much different review. The DVD player seems to be of nice quality and works perfectly with standard DVDs. While looking to replace my DVD player, I had certain specifications that needed to be met before I chose one: Affordable, nice quality, USB port, and capable of reading multiple video files and formats. As quoted in the description, "Incredibly versatile and multi-format-friendly, this DVD player can play back just about any DVD or CD you can throw at it," so this DVD player stuck out from the rest. I further researched the product to make sure it was capable of playing AVI, DIVX, and other video formats and those are listed on the company's product website. Upon receipt, I found the DVD player is very simple to set up and easy to use. It plays standard DVDs perfectly, but if you're trying to play a "burned" DVD it may not work. I thought something was wrong with my disc. I tried several more discs with the same formats listed on this product page including CDs but nothing would work other than standard DVDs. I doubled checked the company website to make sure that the DVD player supported AVI format and it clearly states it in the product description. However, upon reading the owner's manual, AVI and DIVX is supported... in the Canadian version of the product. I'm going to try converting and reformatting discs, but I'm not expecting them to work and if they do work, I'll update. I wish that I had known the American version of the product didn't support the formats listed above. The DVD player works if you only plan on using standard DVDs, but if you are planning to use other video formats, I would suggest you shop around. With the low prices of standard DVD players, I wouldn't have paid $40 bucks for this one but instead gone to Wal-Mart or even a dollar store. The USB port is pretty much useless unless want to use it to use it as a slide show viewer of JPEG images. I have not contacted the seller nor Amazon.

I needed a new DVD player for my bedroom since my last one stopped working just like that. To date I'm quite happy with my purchase - there's a button on the remote control that slows down the picture which for me is a first and an eject tray button which many dvd remotes don't seem to feature. For now I'll give it 5 stars but I will update review my purchase in a couple months.

I have DVDs, VCDs, of various format and the most recent DVD high-end player would not play. This DVD-S48 can accommodate these formats. It is simple to set up and just run out of the box. Can not beat its price either, less than a tank of gasoline. No complaints.

I purchased this item so that I could play DVDs from all Regions (particularly Region 2 in PAL format) and it works like a dream. I can now order DVDs of my favorite UK shows from Amazon UK that are (1) at a much less expensive price than what's being asked for the same product in the US or (2) not yet released in the US. It also plays all of my Region 1 formatted DVDs without any problems. I did order an HDMI hook-up with it. I'm delighted that I have it and am stunned that I only had to invest $49 for it. For the reviewer who cannot get the player to work with DVDs from other Regions, maybe it's a defect in your player. Mine works just fine.
