2.0 out of 5 stars Sorry, not impressed as the others
With all the high five's given this product, I feel like the odd man out with my opinion. But anyway, here goes. I purchased this drill solely on the advise of a Consumer Reports article that gave it very high marks. I was very impressed with it's torque and the length of time the batteries held up to heavy use. However, after 6 months the motor flamed out (it...

This review is from: Panasonic EY6450GQKW 18-volt NiMH 1/2-inch Cordless Drill/Driver Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
As a union journey man plumber I am always looking for the best product to increase my productivity. THis is the best Drill I have ever owned. Lightweight, Long Lasting and the Quality of being manufactured in Japan, not China like alot of its competitors. The battery technology and warranty are what really sold me. Having batteries go bad from overcharging or heat, the SoCal summers, is a big problem down here. THey have a warranty on the batteries for like 2000 charges. That is like 3 years, incredible. Also a problem is theft of tools and with the Panasonic I am the only person on the job with the tools so there is no confusion or misplacing of my tools. The only drawback is that Panasonic doesnt offer a full line of battery compatible cordless saws and lights yet. AS for this deal specifically where else can you get a top of the line Drill with 50$ in rebates. I paid the same for an 18v what most are paying for a 14.4v and mine is full of high technology. I completely reccomend this drill the the serious professional.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE ABSOLUTE BEST IN A COMPETATIVE MARKET, April 6, 2004
By A Customer
I've had the older model of this drill with the NiMH batteries for several years. It was my second Panasonic. Previous one was the 14.4 volt, and I used it so much the batteries wore out, but not the drill. I've had Bosch (chuck wobbles), Porter-Cable (poor quality), and Milwaukee (great, but trigger pinches your fingers), etc. Panasonic is the best by far.

Pros: chuck holds even the smallest bit, excellent balance, really durable, light but powerful enough that if you need more get a drill with a cord or an impact driver. If I had to do it again, I'd go with this Ni-Cad model because it holds a charge longer than the NiMH and is cheaper, although the run time is less.

Cons: None

If you're looking for a great cordless drill, look no further! I've owned 18 volt DeWalt and Makita cordless drills before, and the Panasonic blows them both out of the water. The torque is awesome, and even more importantly, the runtime is by far the best I have ever seen! This Panasonic comes with 3.5 amp-hour batteries, with the competition just now offering 2.4-2.6 amp-hour batteries (with their base batteries less, often 2.0 or 2.2 amp-hour). On the job, I can go for a couple of days on one battery, whereas the other guys I work with have to change their battery several times per day. Also, the ergonimics are very nice, the balance is awesome. It is definitely more comfortable to use than the "other brands" that I have used. If you are truly looking for a star performer, look no further - power, runtime, ergonomics, case - this is the best cordless drill/driver that I have ever used!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly worth 5 stars!, August 12, 2005

This drill is awesome at any price range, let alone $120! Lightweight, powerful, small, and good looking. You can feel the quality just by holding it. The only thing I didn't like about this vs. the Milwaukee is that the trigger is not as rubberized in feel, but that's a minor gripe. On the contrary, it doesn't pinch your fingers like the Milwaukee is sometimes prone to do so I'll take that tradeoff. Also, I read many reviews that this drill ramps up in speed too quickly as the trigger is depressed; however, I have not found it to be a problem. The trigger provides plenty of control of the drill. I bought the one with the NI-CD batteries because they are cheaper and also much more versatile vs. the NIMH. NIMH are designed to work best at room temperature, they lose their charge without use after a few weeks, and they wear out quicker despite costing more. NI-CD work in a wider temperature range, hold their charge better, and don't wear out as fast. They can develop "memory" but so what, just use them as instructed: let them fully deplete charge and then fully charge each time and no problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Cordless Drill, November 9, 2005

I purchased this drill based good reviews and it's an excellent drill. I bought it to do the work on my basement and with 2 batteries coming with the package is a big plus. I never had to stop for charging (one is used and the other is fully charged). The drill has lots of power for my need.

The Panasonic brand for drill was new to me. I always think of DeWalt, Makita, Craftsman, Stanley, etc. when it comes to tool because neither Home Depot nor Lowe's carry Panasonic's tool.

Again, excellent drill. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Panasonic 12 Volt drill, September 30, 2005

After reviewing previous posts on this website, I ordered the Panasonic EY6405FQKW 12 volt drill/driver kit. I was everything that was promised: compact size/quick charge batteries/one handed chuck. This drill is perfect for light to medium household chores. Plus I didn't want to spend in the $200 range. Looking at "entry level" drill kits at Sears, HomeDepot, etc, the bottom price drills all eventually turn out to be deficent...either poor quality or poor design (chucks that don't tighen... By spending a little more at Amazon I got a great drill at a good price. Go for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the 18-volt drill to buy, in my opinion..., March 28, 2005
This review is from: Panasonic EY6450GQKW 18-volt NiMH 1/2-inch Cordless Drill/Driver Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have owned mostly DeWalt cordless tools for the past several years, including their 18v Hammer Drill/Driver. I bought this Panasonic on the recommendation of a good friend about six months ago --- I will never go back.

High Points:

- Excellent Run Time (the batteries are really amazing)
- Great Torque
- Comfortable grip
- Solid chuck that is easy to tighten sufficiently

Low Point:

- Panasonic needs to expand the line to include a solid jigsaw (can they please work with Bosch on this one...), a slick flashlight with an infinitely adjustable head angle, a circular saw, etc. so that I can relieve myself of all my yellow cordless tools...

I really believe that if you give this one a shot, you will not be sorry... except for when your friends' borrow it and will not give it back.

Enjoy!

Panasonic has made a terrific drill. I bought this one based on the reviews and was suprised to find that it exceeded my expectations. The drill is quiet, powerfull and the battery life is excellent. It comes with a great charger with a full indicator and an extra battery. This is definately worth the money!

I have a DeWalt, a Makita, and a 15.4v Panasonic. Both Panasonics are superb. I like the small size and power. There is a feeling of quality about them. I had ordered a reconditioned 14.4v Hitachi, which turned out to be a worthless piece of Chinese junk, and was soon (20 minutes) returned. The DeWalt and Makita are fine, but the Panasonics are in a class by themselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Big Power Small Package, September 4, 2005
This drill is great. The battery charged quickly and when I depressed the trigger the drill twisted in my hand like it wanted to run away. The torque is great not to mention the small size which is great for the ever so demanding home repairs. I wasted my money two years ago on a popular Sears 18 volt model and this smaller unit beats it by far. Great sale price also made a difference. This one's a keeper!
