Background:

While in grad school, I shot weddings as a second source of income, and by the time I was through I'd amassed quite a collection of Nikon gear. These days, I'm shooting far fewer weddings (none), but I am doing a fair amount of consulting work that requires high quality photographs, but also requires hauling photo equipment across the country. It took me exactly one trip to realize that toting my SLR gear through airports was not going to fly (literally). I tried various mirrorless systems (Sony, Nikon 1), but I was consistently disappointed by the quality of the images - and specifically the quality of the lenses.

Within a period of a few months, Panasonic announced the 12-35 f2.8, the 35-100 f2.8, and Olympus announced the 60mm macro lens for the micro-4/3rds mount - three lenses that would, in theory, cover 99% of my shooting needs. Combined with rave reviews received by the Olympus OM-D E-M5, I decided to bite the bullet and try the system out. No regrets.

The Lens:

If you own the Panasonic 12-35 f2.8, you'll feel right at home with this lens.

Build quality is perfectly acceptable, though the lens is markedly less dense than the 12-35. Only about 50 grams separate the two in weight. As a result, the 35-100 doesn't *feel* quite as solid, but the build quality is still a step up from, say, the Panasonic 45-175. It certainly doesn't feel "cheap", even if it doesn't feel like a tank - and to be quite honest, when the main benefit of the micro-4/3rds system is size and weight, I'm not sure "tank" is what I really want. In terms of size, the 35-100 is almost exactly the same size as the 12-35 when fully extended in the 35mm position. The 35-100 does not extend telescopically, maintaining a constant size through the zoom range.

I recently tested the 35-100mm f/2.8 lens for Panasonic along with the GH3. I took them with me on a shoot in the harsh Utah desert where i was doing a lot of climbing and hiking. The combination of camera and lens is really small and light compared with my other full sensor bodies. The lens and body are weatherproofed and though they got a bit wet when i was crossing a river they weren't affected. I am really amazed at how sharp this lens is, especially at f/2.8. I brought the lens to Thailand the other week and you can see how it performs on my facebook page, [...]
The Thai dancer is in the corner of the frame, and she is still really sharp; most lenses have problems wide open at the edge of the frame. I am impressed.

Yes, there is nirvana, twice. I have been very excited about two new lenses from Panasonic. I had already purchased the the first one, the Panasonic Lumix X Vario 12-35mm F2.8 ASPH Power O.I.S. it has lived on my GH2 ever since. I waited to till the new lens was available. Then out came my debit card and over a thousand and a half dollars later, I ordered it. Two days later it arrived but I was traveling for Thanksgiving so I had to wait till I got home! I am not disappointed! I have the brand spanking new wonder lens: the Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 35-100mm F2.8 ASPH Power O.I.S. It has not been left off of my other GH2. That is one of the advantages of having two GH2's.

This is the most expensive lens I have bought including when I had Canon L lenses and my Lumix G X 12-35mm f2.8. I did not buy the Canon L EF 70-200 f2.8 because it was too expensive, large and heavy. I bought the Canon L EF 70-200 f4 IS because it was very sharp, smaller and lighter. It was used on my Canon 60D a lot. A truly wonderful lens. Like both of the Canon's, this lens has weather sealing and is made to a higher standard than their regular lenses. Panasonic choose to brand this lens as well with their upscale X designation. Unlike the Canons, this lens is much smaller and lighter. It will become one of the lenses that I always carry with me.

What we have here is a small, lightweight, fast, ruggedized O.I.S. telephoto zoom lens. On the my GH2 the lens seems to belong there but at the same time it seems small for a tele zoom. It is in diameter about the same as my Lumix 14-140 variable aperture zoom. The weight is about the same too. It fits nicely into my hands and the zoom does not extend when it is zoomed to 100mm with that magical F2.8 aperture. The main barrel seems like metal.

I've been a professional photographer since '96 and have shot the best from Canon and Nikon over the years. I preface this review with this in mind, I have used the Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS, the 70-200 f/4L (and IS version as well), the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VR and VR II. And over the past couple of years I have been playing around with MFT (Micro Four Thirds) so when Panny announced this lens I was pretty excited.

What has amazed me most with MFT is that Olympus and Panasonic (and a few others) have been putting out some amazing products, both from the sensor side and especially from the lens side. What MFT offers over traditional DSLR is an advantage in size, by design it is much more compact, but they have suffered over the years in IQ (Image Quality) because of poor sensor performance, but the game changer was really the Olympus OM-D E-M5 introduced last year and that's what really got me excited with what this system can do since the lenses that Oly and Panny make are absolutely first rate when compared to their DSLR counterparts. But where MFT has been lacking is in nice/fast (aperture) zoom lenses.

Enter the Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8G, a lens that had all the hype of being one of the best fast zooms you could put on a digital body, so I put in my order on Amazon immediately after announcement, but wow, $1500, that is a lot for a MFT lens so I really had high expectations. When first introduced the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII was going for $2400 but has a lot more glass and a very sturdy build quality, and considering the Panny 35-100 is quite a bit smaller I was expecting something similar in a much smaller package.

Well, smaller package Panasonic got right, the 35-100mm f/2.8G is definitely smaller at less than half the size of the Canikon counterparts.
