Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Remarkably Light at 169 g.*

You can take the compact, lightweight HD 40 Series with you anyplace you go. And even with its compact body, this camcorder lets you shoot continuously for an extended time, and comes with a wide range of features, including a 16.8x optical zoom and popular iA function, for truly versatile shooting. This all makes the lightweight 40 Series ideal for use while traveling.

* When using the battery (supplied) and a SD card (optional): Approx. 213 g.

Long Recording of Approximately 135 Minutes Per Charge*

The HD 40 Series offers low power consumption of 2.5 W, and lets you shoot continuously for approximately 135 minutes with a single battery charge. You won't have to worry so much about the remaining battery power while you're on the move, so you can keep recording in comfort. The camcorder is also ideal for long trips.

* 135 minutes of recording time with a fully charged battery (HA mode).

16.8x Optical Zoom and POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer)

16.8x Zoom
Power O.I.S. The HD 40 Series features a 16.8x optical zoom. You can zoom close to catch dynamic shots of distant objects. And because the zoom is optical, there's limited image degradation. Also, POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) helps prevent blurring – typically a big concern when shooting with a zoom. This combination of optical zoom and POWER O.I.S. gives you the ability to take fantastic zoom shots.

Still Picture Recording at 2.1 Megapixels

The HD 40 Series can record stills with 2.1 megapixels.* Also, when playing back the moving pictures you shot, you can capture 2.1-megapixel* still images of any scene you want. The HD 40 Series lets you enjoy high quality in both motion and still images.

* For images recorded with a 16:9 aspect ratio.

Scene Mode

Automatically selects the most suitable shutter speed and aperture for the shooting location and situation.
Scene modes:

  • Sports
  • Portrait
  • Low Light (Motion image only)
  • Spot Light
  • Snow
  • Beach
  • Sunset
  • Fireworks
  • Scenery
  • Night Scenery
  • Night Portrait (Still image only)
Soft Skin Mode

When this function detects skin tones, it softens the focus in that area. This has a skin beautifying effect, which makes wrinkles and lines appear less noticeable. When turned on, this function makes blemishes and moles look less conspicuous, while preserving resolution in areas of the picture outside of the skin.

Tele-Macro

You can shoot macro close-ups while maintaining a distance of 50 cm from your subject. In addition, using the zoom at full magnification makes it much easier to capture extreme close-ups without your body or camera casting a shadow on the subject and while keeping the background in soft focus.

For those shooting with good light & normal subject matter, you may never venture into manual settings, so that isn't a concern.

Just received this Camcorder today, its small, very small with nice, bright and sharp LCD screen, menu is pretty intuitive .... Image stabilization works great, zoom is also very nice. So far so good. I was looking for inexpensive HD camcorder after owning couple of pocket HD (720P) cameras including Flip, decided to get something little more sophisticated and this fits my needs perfectly. Not expensive but still packed with some nice features but at the same time not to a point where people would be intimated by features they don't need/want. Make note that it records in 1080/60i (not P) and 480i. I can record around 100 minutes on 8GB SD card at highest settings.
If anyone is looking for HD camcorder but doesn't want to spend 400-600 USD for it, this would be a great choice.
Thanks Panasonic.
Regards

This camcorder is very easy to use with a minimum amount of first time self instruction. The unit is quite small, much smaller than I had envisioned, yet produces great HD video images. I'd suggest anyone purchasing this camera start by familiarizing themselves with the basic fully automatic features by just experimenting with it. If you encounter something you wish could do better, then explore the manual features you can modify to produce different results.

Altering auto settings while filming can be a bit awkward. If you can determine in advance of the start of a scene that you'll need a feature changed, making that change then will ultimately get the improved results you want. A word of caution - be sure to verify your manually altered settings before the start of subsequent shooting. Some changes revert to their default when starting new scenes. I was pleasantly surprised by finding several features I hadn't seen mentioned prior to my purchase. 50x, 1200x digital tele options, tele-macro mode, backlight compensation and a few others were all extra positives I wasn't aware of.

For those shooting with good light & normal subject matter, you may never venture into manual settings, so that isn't a concern. Once you understand what this camera is capable of recording I'm sure you'll love it.

I deducted 1 star because I feel the manual could be better organized and provide more detail and the availability of a more reasonably priced spare battery would be welcome. Nonetheless, I'm happy with my purchase. It really does have many features that allow you to produce very good HD videos easily and at a very nice Amazon price.

The camcorder takes very nice pictures it is excellent high def. The only thing I was disappointed with this particular model has no internal memory and the user guide was very confusing. The guide was consolidated for more than one model of camera so i was looking for things that were not even on my camera.

I had to get a camcorder for a college film class I was taking. It was an introductory class, so I didn't have to do anything very fancy with it, but it seems like a very good camcorder. It has a lot of great features, good quality video recording, and it fit on the camera tripod I already had. The battery lasted a good long time before having to be charged and the zoom was good enough for me. The camera is also not heavy, so it's easy to carry around. But most importantly, I didn't have any trouble converting the AVCHD files to .mov and other formats using Adobe Media Encoder, something I had been worried about. It doesn't do very well with recording in the dark/at night, but according to my teacher, that's a common camcorder problem. So overall, this is a great camcorder!

So I bought this used as a value option for my family. I won't go into the specs, just what you need to know as a regular joe. The zoom is nice @12x, it is pretty stable when standing, shaky when you walk. Video quality really ranges depending on the light. If it is dark it has a tiny light that honestly is not very good, would not recommend this for poor lighting as it blurs everything, which is the main drawback. Uses a SD card and came with a USB cord to transfer files from the camera to computer (you can also slip in the SD card to your computer). I would buy a larger minimum 16 GB card so you don't constantly have to delete photos & video.

Overall for a $120, I am happy and it suits my current needs. If you are looking at better quality, you have to pay for it.
