Product Description

From the Manufacturer

28mm Wide Angle*

28mm Wide The 28mm wide-angle* on the HD 90 Series fits more people and more of the background into the frame than conventional models. This is especially handy when you want to take a group photo in a small room. It fits your subjects in even when you shoot from up close, and makes it possible to pick up even small sounds with the mic. It also gives you entirely new ways to enjoy your camcorder, like taking self portraits or capturing sweeping landscapes without losing the sense of scale.

* 35mm camera equivalent

Intelligent 40x Zoom and HYBRID O.I.S.

40x
Power O.I.S. HybridThe HD 90 Series features a an Intelligent Zoom function that goes all the way up to 40x. When using Intelligent Zoom, Intelligent Resolution technology lets you shoot at high zoom rates while preserving the image resolution. You get sharp images of highly detailed objects – without the blurry edges. Plus, the HD 90 Series is equipped with HYBRID O.I.S., an image stabilizer system that corrects hand-shake blurring by combining the action of its hybrid optical and electrical image stabilization systems. Even when zooming, where hand-shake often occurs, both optical and electrical hand-shake correction make it possible to record beautiful images with approximately 2 times* the hand-shake suppressing effect as conventional models.

* Compared with the HDC-SD60, HDC-TM60, and HDC-HS60.

O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) Lock

The image-stabilizing effect is increased by pressing and holding the O.I.S. Lock indication on the LCD screen, which maximizes the blur detection sensitivity. This is great for when you want to zoom at a fixed angle, like for bird watching.

* Considerable blurring is generated by the shifting of the corrective lens when the camera is panned or tilted.

1080/60p Recording (Full-HD 1920 x 1080, 60 Progressive Recording)*

Full HD With its transfer rate of 28 Mbps, 1080/60p recording (Full-HD, 1,920 x 1,080, 60 progressive recording)* conveys about twice the information of 1080i (interlace) recording. Whereas interlacing requires two images to produce a complete picture, the progressive method records a single image as a complete picture. Plus, the 60 Progressive Recording of the 900 Series and SD800 produce 60 images per second.** This extremely dense image information creates intricate detail and silky smooth motion. Even when subjects move quickly, afterimages are minimized to create more natural images. The progressive method is most effective when shooting designs where more patterns tend to occur, or when capturing scenes during sports events where the subjects are intensely moving around. Also, the recorded images displayed clearly even when they are made into still images, so it is possible to preserve stunning photos when clipping them from videos.
Interlaced Scanning (1080/60i)***

Only half of the image data is reproduced in each picture. Fabric patterns run together, and moiré patterns appears.
Interlaced Scanning - Only half of the image data is reproduced in each picture.

Interlaced Scanning (1080/60i)***

Progressive Scanning (1080/60p)*

Crystal Engine PRO

Crystal Engine Pro The Crystal Engine PRO instantly processes the huge amount of data that goes into Full-HD images, and further enhances Full-HD quality. It produces smooth, high-resolution zoom shots even when the range exceeds the limit for optical zooming. Crystal Engine PRO clearly delineates even the tiniest details of your subject, with extremely natural beauty. In addition, its Noise Reduction (NR) technology has been completely redesigned. The low-frequency noise that occurs when recording in dim lighting has been further minimized. Compared to previous Panasonic models, noise has been reduced by approximately 45%.* And Intelligent Resolution Technology ensures sharp and crisp pictures, resulting in bright and beautifully colored motion images.

* Compared with the HDC-SD60, HDC-TM60, and HDC-HS60.

Intelligent Resolution Technology

Intelligent Resolution TechnologyThe Intelligent Resolution Technology incorporated in the new Crystal Engine PRO uses edge detection technology to confirm the edges of objects within the image, then emphasizes the edges for optimal clarity. For example, it brings crisp definition to patterns and the outlines of objects like flowers. Conversely, it reduces noise and enhances the natural smoothness of parts without edges, like the sky. The increased sharpness is especially effective for images with delicate details. This highly advanced technology maximizes the beauty of Full-HD images.

* Intelligent Resolution Technology works only for digital zoom shots.
New Zoom Mic and Wind Noise Canceller
Zoom Mic

The Zoom Mic function that links with the camera's zoom action has evolved even further. Compared to previous models, the noise-reducing performance is improved by 1/3 (-10dB).* It lets you clearly record the sound of your target subject.

* Compared with the HDC-SD60, HDC-TM60, and HDC-HS60.

Wind Noise Canceller

The Wind Noise Canceller automatically detects and suppresses only wind noise. It lets you capture natural sounds with lifelike ambience even when shooting in windy conditions outdoors or by the sea.

Still Picture Recording at 5 Megapixels with Intelligent Resolution Technology

In Still Picture Recording mode, Intelligent Resolution Technology lets you record clear still images with resolution up to 5 megapixels.* Also, when playing back the moving pictures you shot, you can capture 4.5-megapixel** still images of any scene you want. The HD 90 Series lets you enjoy high quality in both motion and still images.

* For images recorded with a 4:3 aspect ratio.
** For images recorded with a 16:9 aspect ratio.

Scene Mode

Automatically selects the most suitable shutter speed and aperture for the shooting location and situation.
Scene modes:
  • Sports
  • Portrait
  • Low Light (Motion image only)
  • Spot Light
  • Snow
  • Beach
  • Sunset
  • Fireworks
  • Scenery
  • Night Scenery
  • Night Portrait (Still image only)
Soft Skin Mode

When this function detects skin tones, it softens the focus in that area. This has a skin beautifying effect, which makes wrinkles and lines appear less noticeable. When turned on, this function makes blemishes and moles look less conspicuous, while preserving resolution in areas of the picture outside of the skin.
Tele-Macro

You can shoot macro close-ups while maintaining a distance of 70cm from your subject. In addition, using the zoom at full magnification makes it much easier to capture extreme close-ups without your body or camera casting a shadow on the subject and while keeping the background in soft focus.

The video is a test of stabilization of on then off then on again up to 60x while balancing the camera on my car door.

I was looking for quality, optical zoom power, and stabilization at high power when I found this camera.
The higher priced Sony and Canon models have lower optical zoom of 10x or 12x compared to this one of 26x. Up to 40x still looks superb. The zoom is fast and variable.
Has great stabilization and an icon to touch that really locks on and holds the subject still. No more tripod needed in most cases. Also the AF lock will hold moving objects in focus when touching the LCD monitor.
You don't need a wide angle attachment either with the 28mm lens. Also, the lens with 1.8 gathers plenty of light.
It has a manual/auto control button on the camera body.
I will use this at outdoor events and anything of interest. Videos look professional with the stability.
The battery is good for at least an hour of video with on and off shooting.
Stills are good enough quality for me at 5mp.
There are 6 quality settings available depending on your computers processing power.
So far I haven't found anything bad about it other than it doesn't come with any features like high speed, time lapse or auto record.

I've had this camera for a couple of weeks and have a mixed opinion. Here is a summary of both the good and bad.

Pros:
1) So far the video quality is mostly very good (but see aqua green color issue).
2) Image stabilization feature seams to work very well.
3) Very responsive controls (such as when switching modes, etc.)
4) Small and usable form factor.
5) Low-light is better than expected (if not zooming too much). This is much better than my old CANON HF100.
6) Battery life seams good.

Cons:
1) About 10 to 20 percent of photos and video have an aqua green tint to the entire scene or just white/grey portions of a scene. For example, in the white portion of a game jersey. It's not all the time, but for me, it's just a little too frequent. This is the biggest issue for me with this camcorder. (- 1.5)
2) PRE-RECORD active icon is in middle of screen. This makes it difficult to see someones face (for example). Either there needs to be a clear display button or the icon needs to be moved to the edge. (- .5)
3) noticeable but minor fan noise both while recording and in the clip (much more than my canon though)
4) Left Touch menu pops up when initially opening the LCD. Feels like it's in the way when you want to start recording. It should default to the minimized state. (minor)
5) Touch controls arrows operate backwards for me (i.e. press right and it goes the left menu page) (minor)
6) Battery sticks out just a little making it slightly uncomfortable to get to record button. (minor)

I'm ended up returning due to the aqua green color issue. I tried an exchange first but that unit exhibited the same problem. It was not an easy decision with so many good things going for this camera, especially with the image stabilization and low light performance. I will continue with my older canon for now. I would definitely repurchase if the aqua green is ever resolved. If your okay with an occasional misfire of aqua green then definitely consider this camera.

Amazingly small package March 16, 2011
My Panasonic HDC-SD5 died after 3+ years, and I decided to get this unit as a replacement. I've only had it a few days and will post a follow up, but initial impressions are very good. It is small - really small, smaller than the SD-5. This is generally good, though operation has taken a little getting used to. If you have hands like Andre the Giant, this could be a problem. The images from the 1080p are breathtaking, though I am a little worried about what I am going to do with all these huge data streams (I don't as of yet have the software to edit these files). I haven't really had a chance to compare the various AVCHD bit rate formats to check quality. That will take a little time and I would welcome any suggestions or feedback from others.

The layout is generally an improvement over my earlier camcorder. You don't have to remove the battery to charge; the camera comes on automatically when you open the LCD and the touch screen, once you get used to it, is pretty intuitive. I'm working my way through the various menus and settings, but honestly, the iA (intelligent automatic) delivers such solid results, I haven't experimented too much. The zoom and stabilization system really blew me away - the range, sharpness and stability when you are zoomed in vastly exceeds my earlier camera. It masks almost all hand shake - unbelievable really.

Haven't taken many still shots - I don't really think that is what these are cameras are for personaly. Images are better than the SD-5 (which isn't saying much), but not better than a good point and shoot.

Negatives thus far I suppose would be that I worry about having only a touch screen interface in bright light conditions - it may be hard to see what I am doing. There may be a non-touch screen control option, but I haven't located it yet. The manual is not extraordinarily helpful - big surprise there, right?

Overall, I'm very pleased. I'm off on a vacation and will try to really give battery, etc. a work out and then follow up.

Happy shopping!
