Cordless, but no batteries,

This iron has three features that make it great:First, its cordless. Not having a cord to get in the way makes ironing much faster and easier. Second, it has a detachable water container, so when you need to refill the water, you don't have to carry the iron to the faucet (or carry water in a cup to the iron). You can simply detach the water container and fill it at your leisure. Third, it has a base unit, which makes for a convenient place to set the iron while you are adjusting your clothes. When I bought the iron, I just assumed that this product was a battery operated product that would heat itself using power stored in a battery inside the unit. Not so. Instead, power is supplied by a base unit which you put the put the iron on. When you want to use the iron, you turn it on and the base unit supplies power to the iron and heats it up. Then, you remove the iron from the base and do your ironing. Panasonic says that the iron will eventually cool down if it is off the base for long enough, so you should put it back onto the base in between passes to let it heat back up. I found that the unit maintains its heat very well and for a long time, so there was absolutely no problem with having enough heat to iron, and using the base unit was a real convenience. Panasonic's manual states that most people iron for eleven seconds and then adjust their clothes for about 8 seconds. Thus, Panasonic theorizes that this cycle will be no problem and I agree: Whenever you ordinarily set the iron on your ironing board to adjust your clothes, you instead set the iron on your base (which is also on your ironing board). All in all, another great convenience product from Panasonic.

I agree with pretty much everything that Martin says and he gives a good summary of the features of the iron so I won't repeat them. Suffice to say that this iron can claim sole responsibility for the fact that my shirts are now being ironed again. (Don't ask what I was doing before. Please.) The point is that it works - it easily stays hot long enough for almost all items of clothes and you will, like me, probably be surprised at how much easier ironing becomes just by virtue of the fact that you don't have that blasted cord limiting your movements. I tried to think of a reason to take a star off but I can't. In addition to being a great product, and reasonably priced, it arrived within about 2 hours of having ordered it, which was FANTASTIC. I can recommend it without the slightest hesitation. Gordon.

Finally -- No cord!,

I am surprised at how well this iron does the job... I was skeptical about how long it would hold heat. And would it be hot enough for cottons and linens? Like other, I at first thought this would be a rechargeable product, but after realizing that it wasn't -- and reading positive reviews, bought it anyway. I didn't realize how much water I was losing from the reservoir in my Black and Decker Professional, which was constantly "spitting" on whatever I was ironing and became very irritating. The fact that this one DOES NOT LEAK also means less trips for a refill! My old iron was leaking out so much water, I was refilling every other piece I ironed!
I still feel a little "restricted" which is why I can't give this product 5 stars -- since you still must rest the iron on the electric charger and that has to be connected to an outlet, must rest on the ironing board and also has to be "moved" when using moving from one end of the ironing board to another. However, there's a built-in safety feature.. I was forever burning my arm when adjusting clothing and bumping the iron sole plate ... with the Panasonic, I am forced to put the iron back on the charger, with the sole plate facing downward, so that can't happen anymore. I do like this iron's ability to reach precarious places because of it's narrow and sharp front-end design. Great for ironing jeans pockets and shirt cuffs. And without the cord, you can get to those places without wrestling the cord. My cat was quite disappointed..... she always likes to swipe at the dangling cord when I iron...! I would recommend this iron to anyone who does A LOT of ironing -- it's a nice change!

When the iron arrived, I just wanted to try it out quickly to make sure I liked it, but then I soon found myself ironing everything in the closet. This heats up quickly, and yes, it gets quite hot, much hotter than my old Black and Decker iron. This iron stays just as hot between ironing "sweeps." The weighted heating base that you set it on actually helps your ironing board to feel more "stable," and since you set it down horizontally, you don't have to worry about the iron falling off and crashing onto the floor (like before). Plus, no cord to work with! YIPPEE! This iron is terrific.

I bought this iron barely 6 months ago and was thrilled with it in the beginning. It does iron very well. The problem is, it has started to leak. Just within the last month or so what started as a slow, small leak, is now leaking so badly the water is running out through the base. I've tried to call Panasonic numerous times and am now convinced there are no humans working there at all. I could never get past the automated runaround. I've just ordered the Maytag cordless and I doubt I'll ever buy anything from Panasonic again.

I agree what other reviewers say - no cord is great, and the iron remains hot enough to last through most of my ironing.
The water tank is detachable, but since the iron is cordless, to refill the water tank I just take the whole iron to the tap and fill it up directly, and the tank lasts a very long time on medium steam anyway. Another good thing about this iron is the water tank is dripless. I used to have a Black and Decker iron that leaks water from the steam vents, and I just expect all steam irons do that. But not a single drop of water dripped out of the steam vent when I travel between the sink and the ironing board, so it is not making a mess! I don't have any problem with the retractable cord at the base, as several other reviewers do. You just have to pull it out a little bit to activate the spring and it retracts with no problem. The cord is on the short side (only 3-4 feet long) and I am used to longer cords, but that only means I have to put the base closer to the power outlet. My only concern is that the contacts between the base and the iron do not look very sturdy, so the iron might not be able to get heated up enough after some use. Right now it is not a problem, I will see how that goes after several months. Overall, this iron is terrific! I will never want to have another iron with cords again!

Hot Hot Hot,

This iron is fantastic and stays hot for a long time while it is off the base. I bought it because I am an avid quilter and needed something cordless and that travels well. It is a little heavier than I expected but I think that lends to its durability. I used to use a travel iron that was a waste of time.My only complaint is that the cord says it is retractable and I think that just means you have to push it back inside the unit and that is not as easy as I hoped. Other than that I give it an A++ and I hate to iron!!

Beats Rowenta by a mile,
This review is from: Panasonic NI-L45NR Cordless Iron (Kitchen)
I had a Rowenta cordless/corded iron for many years. The reason I tolerated the leaking, which didn't happen right away, was because cordless irons weren't on every corner. Once you have one, you're hooked ("I've seen Paree; I can't go back to the farm"). In fact, when I began searching online for a new iron (the dial broke), I never even saw a Rowenta cordless. Presumably, instead of resolving their iron's major H2O issue, they discontinued it.
I bought the Panasonic on the strength of the reviews, and I'm simply delighted. It arrived sooner than stated, so I only had to use the corded (ugh) backup for a couple weeks instead of months. It's smaller, lighter in weight, and a cool purple. I especially like the non-stick surface that will never look mottled like the other one and will be easy to clean as well. There's the option to remove the reservoir so I won't saturate the ironing board again. Adjusting the temperature is much better than a dial, plus I can tell when the Panasonic is off. The Rowenta lacked this word, who knows why? Best of all - IT DOESN'T LEAK. Two nits, and they're mine, not Panasonic's. The Rowenta could be used corded. Occasionally, I needed that flexibility and will keep the backup for those times. It won't kill me. The Rowenta didn't have auto shutoff, which for a seamstress is a boon to be able to sew/press/sew/press without needing a heatup. I realize it's a safety feature for which I should be grateful, and I am. I just became accustomed to no break in the sewing process and truly did check it before I left. It won't kill me to wait or move the iron every so often to keep it drawing power. These slight nuisances don't outweigh all the positives. I love this little iron.

Never Thought It Would Work,
By Maureen Anders (Phoenix, AZ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Panasonic NI-L45NR Cordless Iron (Kitchen)
We've had our iron for 2 weeks now -- and much to our amazement, it works great. At first, I thought the water tank was too small--but using the medium steam setting, the water tank lasted far longer than any other iron we've used. The iron is also not as heavy as prior irons we've had, so it's easier and less tiring to use. It stays hot, just as advertised, and I do not find it distracting to have the base sitting on the ironing board, like I thought I would.
The one negative is that the retractable cord not only is not easily or automatically retractable, we could not even manually get it to retract into the base unit. We resorted to wrapping the cord around the iron before putting the top back on the unit to store it.
