Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Slender and stately, Panasonic's PT-47WX53 projection television makes a powerful statement for high quality, rich features, and affordable pricing. The 47-inch set's broad HDTV/EDTV display capability (1080i, 480p) lets you view high-definition or enhanced-definition TV programming from an optional DTV set-top box with an ATSC receiver or from a progressive-scan DVD player. The set's wide, 0.52 mm fine-pitch screen is configured in a 16:9 aspect ratio, the standard for HDTV broadcasts as well as for widescreen DVD movies.

Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional video picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Panasonic's Progressive Cinema Scan (3:2 pulldown) provides faithful reproduction of film-based materials. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; Progressive Cinema Scan digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

Ten-bit A/D image processing boosts conventional grayscale gradations by a factor of four, producing four times as many shades of black and white and a bright picture that closely resembles the original analog source material. A progressive-scan up-converter makes horizontal scan lines virtually invisible.

A motion-adaptive 3D-Y/C digital comb filter displays bright colors and action scenes with incredible clarity by minimizing the "color rainbow effect" in closely spaced patterns, compensating for the motion that occurs between fields. Included 10-bit, 60 MHz analog-to-digital image processing boosts conventional grayscale from 256 to 1,024, delivering four times as many shades of black and white.

Digital velocity-modulated scanning improves definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas.

Two-tuner picture-in-picture with split-screen display lets you view two programs at once by dividing the screen in half down the middle. Each program is shown at full height, with one program on the left side and the other on the right. PIP benefits from 8-bit processing, making the inset nearly as crisp as the main picture. The inset picture is scalable in size, from .0625x to .25x.

For connections, the set offers four composite-video inputs, including one in front for easy hookup of a camcorder or gaming console. There are three S-video inputs (including one in front) and two sets of component-video inputs. The TV is also equipped with a direct digital DVI (Digital Visual Interface) connection with HDCP copy protection.

Other features include horizontal and vertical edge correction, Artificial Intelligence Picture Control (continuously monitors signal conditions to maintain high contrast), Artificial Intelligence Sound (minimizes variances in sound level), video noise reduction (compares individual pixels of two consecutive fields, then removes noise), BBE High Definition Sound (improves speech intelligibility and restores musical dynamic range), nine-point user convergence capability, an eye-catching 3-D on-screen menu system, and a light-disk remote control.

Channel banner captures information transmitted with each program--such as station identification and V-chip ratings--and places it onscreen in a semi-transparent banner. An easy-to-clean screen shield protects the screen from nicks, scratches, and fingerprints.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome TV, September 18, 2003
By
This review is from: Panasonic PT-47WX53 47-Inch Widescreen HD-Ready Projection TV (Electronics)
This tv is a GREAT tv. The picture quality is great. It has nice zoom modes ( say your watching a letterboxed tv show < broadcast in 4:3 but letterboxed on top and bottom > you can zoom it with the tv and it will cut off the top and bottom black bars and have a perfect AR! ) the stretch mode is ok as well takes a bit getting used to at first. Xbox Games are great on this TV ( using an component video cable to get HDTV ) widescreen and very live colors. I used the avia calibration disc and the colors are amazing. This TV also has a Svideo input on the front and has DVI on the back. IF i didnt already have a very nice sound system i wouldnt really need one soo bad with this tv. The tv's speakers are very nice and very clear. The tv also is big enough with the speakers so you dont need to buy a tv stand. This tv only got 4 out of 5 stars because it doesnt support 720p. 1080 is nice. When hooked up to an external hdtv reciever ( samsung ts151 ) the quality and detail is absolutly amazing! each hair is shown clearly. WB/CBS/NBC all broadcast 1080i ABC/FOX broadcast different formats ( ABC 720p not supported by this tv but with that samsung tuner it will convert it to 1080i no worries ) fox is 480p ( progressive dvd quality ) Overall this is a great TV! you wont be sorry.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Make this Mistake!, November 19, 2003

This review is from: Panasonic PT-47WX53 47-Inch Widescreen HD-Ready Projection TV (Electronics)
This TV, and ALL wide-screen projection TV's must be watched in wide-screen mode or you risk burning out the picture tube at HUGE costs to you. This is NOT covered by warranty. 90% of what you watch will NOT be in wide-screen format. If you put a regular TV show in wide-screen, the picture is distorted. If you watch in 4:3 mode, you will burn out the tube. Ours burned out in 1 year at avg 5 hours of use per WEEK, NOT DAY! Panasonic will do NOTHING to help you out. Best-Buy did not warn us of this problem and in fact, said it was fine to watch in 4:3 mode. Do yourself a favor - until more shows are broadcast in widescreen, get a standard TV.

5.0 out of 5 stars great tv, December 4, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Panasonic PT-47WX53 47-Inch Widescreen HD-Ready Projection TV (Electronics)
this tv took me about 20 minutes to set everything up, convergence of the colors was probably the hardest part but even that wasn't too bad. the size is perfect for a small living room or even a good sized bedroom (which is where i have mine). the functions on the remote are very clear. and all the picture modes work great. watching a t.v. show in 4:3 format just seems stupid. full screen or zoom mode is by far the way to go. distortion or not it is still a great picture and after watching it a few times you get used to it. with a progressive scan dvd player, s-video and component cables the picture is almost unbeatable.
