Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Preserve your classic VHS collection while still enjoying the latest digital formats with the Panasonic PV-D4745K dual-deck DVD player/VCR combo. The PV-D4745K supports such disc types as DVD, DVD-RAM, CD, CD-R/RW, and VCD while also playing MP3 and JPEG files burned onto a CD-R. As a result, you don't need to purchase a separate component to listen to music or view photo slideshows on your TV. The DVD player also offers a progressive scan output that produces a higher resolution picture when connected to an HD or HD-ready TV. Referred to as 480 for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, progressive scan creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, resulting in a sharper picture with virtually no jagged-edge motion artifacts.

The built-in four-head VCR, meanwhile, also offers outstanding picture quality while recording all your favorite shows. The unit includes a 181-channel TV/cable TV tuner and a one-month/eight-event programming timer, so it's possible to capture every episode of Project Runway even if you leave town for a few weeks. And thanks to such features as commercial skip, an index search, and a tape position display, it's never been easier to navigate your way through a VHS tape. Other VCR features include an auto clock set (no more flashing "12:00" displays), an auto channel setup, and hi-fi stereo sound.

Speaking of audio, the DVD player is equipped with DTS and Dolby Digital outputs, letting you enjoy 5.1-channel surround sound performance when connected to a compatible A/V receiver. Viewers with traditional stereo speakers won't be left in the cold, however, as the PV-D4745K also offers a virtual surround option that creates a 3D soundscape through two-channel systems.

And no DVD player is complete without a variety of playback extras, and the PV-D4745K is no slouch in this department. The multi-angle playback (available with select discs) lets you watch your favorite scenes from several different angles, while the multi-speed scan and slow is great for skipping ahead. And should you need to take a closer look at a frame, simply employ the digital picture zoom. Other details include an A/V optimizer, program play, and subtitling in up to 32 languages.

The PV-D4745K measures 16.9 by 3.7 by 10 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and a 90-day warranty on labor.

What's in the Box
PV-D4745K DVD player/VCR, remote control, two AA batteries, RF coaxial cable, user's manual.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very satisfied, April 4, 2006

I could have bought a cheeper unit, but I didn't like the poor reviews other players got. I use this unit to view my store bought VCRs and DVDs and it works perfectly. This is an extremely complex piece of electronics equipment and the user manual can be quite itimidating. It was written by "techno geeks" for "techno geeks". However, you don't have to be intimidated. I could re-write the manual for someone like me in a single sentence; "Run the cables from the unit to your TV (a simple task), then press VCR if you want to watch a VCR, or press DVD if you want to watch a DVD. Then press "play". I would buy this same unit again if I needed another one.

4.0 out of 5 stars High quality product but with questionable design issues, March 13, 2006
This review is from: Panasonic PV-D4745K Dual-Deck Progressive Scan DVD Player/VCR Combo (Black) (Electronics)
I purchased this unit about a month and a half ago. After reading all of the negative ads about of the combo units, I decided to trust my experience with a past Panasonic unit, and bought this unit.

Up to now, I'm very satisfied with the quality of this product. The picture is great in both DVD and VHS formats. The Remote conrol's design is also logical and easy-to-use. Pure and simple, the unit's quality is consistent with Panasonic electronic equipment that I've purchased in the past.

Now, for some constructive criticism (I hope). I purchased my first VHS in 1987 and have never had one that didn't have a clock on it until NOW. How you could design a DVD/VCR without a clock? Very bizarre! So, if it matters to you, make sure you have a clock in the room. The display on the unit itself is similarly out of date, and makes no attempt to appear technologially relevant past the early 80's. It even says "Still" on the screen instead of "Pause" when one presses "Pause."

Having said all of this, given the horrible reviews for other products with a lot more "bells and whistles," I would definitely recommend this unit, so long as you don't care about the lack of certain expected features in a unit of this sort in 2006.

If you don't, I'd definitely buy it...

Oh, the unit is also amazingly small and light for a dual-deck.

Let me start by saying that I have a DVR through my cable service, so I use that more than anything else to record programs. I do have some DVDs and VHS tapes that I like to play occasionally, though, so I thought this combo unit would be good for me. It does everything it's supposed to -- no complaints about scanning or picture or sound. It was easy enough to hook up, and it's easy to use. I do need to wear my glasses to use the remote -- tiny buttons and lettering. This unit is nothing fancy, but I think it's a really good product, especially considering the price.
