I could have bought a cheeper unit, but I didn't like the poor reviews other players got. I use this unit to view my store bought VCRs and DVDs and it works perfectly. This is an extremely complex piece of electronics equipment and the user manual can be quite itimidating. It was written by "techno geeks" for "techno geeks". However, you don't have to be intimidated. I could re-write the manual for someone like me in a single sentence; "Run the cables from the unit to your TV (a simple task), then press VCR if you want to watch a VCR, or press DVD if you want to watch a DVD. Then press "play". I would buy this same unit again if I needed another one.

High quality product but with questionable design issues,

I purchased this unit about a month and a half ago. After reading all of the negative ads about of the combo units, I decided to trust my experience with a past Panasonic unit, and bought this unit.
Up to now, I'm very satisfied with the quality of this product. The picture is great in both DVD and VHS formats. The Remote conrol's design is also logical and easy-to-use. Pure and simple, the unit's quality is consistent with Panasonic electronic equipment that I've purchased in the past. Now, for some constructive criticism (I hope). I purchased my first VHS in 1987 and have never had one that didn't have a clock on it until NOW. How you could design a DVD/VCR without a clock? Very bizarre! So, if it matters to you, make sure you have a clock in the room. The display on the unit itself is similarly out of date, and makes no attempt to appear technologially relevant past the early 80's. It even says "Still" on the screen instead of "Pause" when one presses "Pause." Having said all of this, given the horrible reviews for other products with a lot more "bells and whistles," I would definitely recommend this unit, so long as you don't care about the lack of certain expected features in a unit of this sort in 2006. If you don't, I'd definitely buy it... Oh, the unit is also amazingly small and light for a dual-deck.

Let me start by saying that I have a DVR through my cable service, so I use that more than anything else to record programs. I do have some DVDs and VHS tapes that I like to play occasionally, though, so I thought this combo unit would be good for me. It does everything it's supposed to -- no complaints about scanning or picture or sound. It was easy enough to hook up, and it's easy to use. I do need to wear my glasses to use the remote -- tiny buttons and lettering. This unit is nothing fancy, but I think it's a really good product, especially considering the price.

Solves DVR Campatibility Problems,

A few years ago I purchased a Panasonic DVR. Over time, I have recorded several DVD-Rs from the DVR. Much to my surprise, the DVD-Rs will not play on several non Panasonic DVD machines, even if they are advertised as being capable of playing the DVD-R format. After trying several brands, I finally purchased the dual deck Panasonic, and it has faithfully played all my recorded DVD-Rs to date. This problem should be carefully considered before buying any DVR.

The unit seems physically a little dated and clunky but it performs well enough. The key feature I was looking for was playback of DVD-RAM discs. I have a DVD recorder so I can view programs/movies/etc. put onto the DVD-RAM on this unit and then erase and re-record stuff on that DVD_RAM. So this allows me to use the DVD as a VCR in terms of reusing the DVD-RAM repeatedly for time shifting type purposes with much better video and audio quality.
It performs other functions competently so all in all, I think it's a pretty good deal.

Replacing a Panasonic DVD,

Due to the limited room in may entertainment cabinet I desided to replace my older Panasonic DVD and SONY VCR with this Panasonic PV-D4745K DVD/VCR Dual Deck. I choose Panasonic because I liked my older DVD player.
On the plus side the unit is easy to use. The minus side, and the reason for 3 stars, there is some noise when the DVD "side" of the combo is playing. My old Panasonic DVD played silently.

Where's the Clock?,

I bought this to replace my VCR and my Apex DVD player. I wanted something rather simple and not too fancy. I am satisfied with the Panasonic, but I have one complaint. I have lost my glow-in-the-dark clock to which I have been accustomed for the past 15 or so years that I have had a VCR in my bedroom. Silly oversight in my opinion...

The only thing I really do not like about the unit is that when playing a DVD, the unit opens atop the button you push to open/close the DVD drawer. It makes it a little inconvenient to push to right button.
But, the clarity and quality of the unit is excellent. I've found most Panasonic electronics are a good value fo the price. This item is not eifferent.
