Enjoy your entire movie collection in one home theater component with the Panasonic PV-D744S DVD/VCR combo. The PV-D744S bundles together a progressive-scan DVD player and 4-head hi-fi stereo VCR. With the multiformat DVD player, you can watch DVD and VCD movie discs, listen to MP3/WMA audio files and view JPEGS from CD-R/RW, DVD-R, and DVD-RAM discs, and play audio CDs.

The DVD player has virtual surround sound for a cinemalike experience on systems with only two speakers when playing any Dolby Digital-encrypted DVD or Video CD with two or more channels. It also offers DTS and Dolby Digital decoders.

The front A/V inputs make it easy to connect your camcorder, headphones, game system, or other video equipment to your DVD/VCR combo. The DVD connects to your TV or home theater receiver via component or S-Video connectors. The format provides a film's director with the ability to include multiple camera angles for the same scenes, or to include a series of different endings. Each DVD movie disc is different, but with the DVD format, the sky's the limit!
• Home Theater Ready: Certain Panasonic HI-FI VCRs are the same width as standard audio components to help you create an attractive-looking home theater system.
• Auto Clock Set with 24-Hour Backup: By receiving the Extended Data Service signal, where available, from your local PBS channel, the clock and date are set automatically. Furthermore, a back-up system saves the settings and, in the event of a power outage, resets them automatically when the power is restored.

This isn't a review of the product. The manual clearly states what formats are supported on this unit, and is inconsistent with what is written in Amazon's product description. I pulled the following list from the PDF format manual that can be downloaded on this page. (+) indicates supported, whereas (-) indicates not supported.

In 3 hours of frustrated attempts to set up this Christmas present, I'm unable to get _anything_ to display on my TV; no setup screens for clock/tuners, nor even get the picture from a VCR to display (though it plays). The instruction manual provides icon images of buttons, but they don't match what's on the remote.

One single bulleted item says the remote only works with Panasonic TVs. I can only guess this means none of the Panasonic VCR/DVD features works with my JVC TV monitor(my 15 year old Logitech VCR changed channels and ran tapes fine).

A good buy! My Grandmother's TV has only a CATV input so this combo works great without having to buy a converter. If I ever buy a widescreen plasma display for Grammy, I can use the progressive scan component inputs as well! Anyway, I just hooked up the rabbit ears to the input and the TV to the output. I was up and running in no time!
