Amazon.com Review

Panasonic's KX-TR320 sports all of the features you'd expect of an FRS radio in this price range, including the ability to transmit on all 14 FRS channels and on 38 subcodes within each channel. It's also one of the coolest-looking FRS radios we've ever laid eyes on. Unfortunately, the very things that make it look so good also hurt its usability.

This radio runs on three AA batteries or its outlet power via an AC/DC converter (not included). There are also jacks on the top to connect to an external microphone and headset (also not included). All of these jacks are sealed by rubber plugs that fit snugly enough to make this one of the few splashproof FRS radios on the market. The feel of the unit exudes quality, and except for the fragile-looking flip-up antenna, this is one radio that could easily absorb several drops onto cement and come up asking for more.

On the downside, the KX-TR320 has rather small buttons that are difficult to see, let alone press. And they're packed so close together it's easy to press the wrong one. This fault can be turned into an upside, as it's also difficult to inadvertently press a button just by handling the unit, but we found using the KX-TR320 in less than optimal lighting conditions to be a chore.

However, both the sound quality and range of the unit were excellent, and if you have two or more of the radios you can take advantage of the privacy subcodes that only let you hear people using the same subcode (although everyone else on the same channel who isn't using the codes can hear you). We've seen better overall values, but the KX-TR320's rugged construction and rich features really add to its appeal. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Allows for several privacy codes and 5 different call tones
  • Great sound quality and range
  • Rugged construction

Cons:

  • Buttons are very hard to work with

Amazon.com Product Description

The Palm Link KX-TR320B two-way radio helps you keep in touch with your family or friends on the slopes, the trail, or the street. It has a 2-mile range that is great for the outdoors. A flip-down microphone with a separate ear speaker lets you hold the unit close like a cellular phone and converse more privately.

The KX-TR320B has 38 different privacy codes so you can selectively include or exclude other two-way radio users. Other Palm Link two-way radio users can monitor or join your conversations if they are operating on the same combination of channel and privacy codes. You can search all 14 channels and 38 privacy codes for active transmissions with the scan function.

The Palm Link KX-TR320B's rugged design with rubberized trim and grip helps absorb the impact of the occasional knocks and bumps that come with outdoor use. It is also splash resistant in case you get caught in the rain. The ring-call alert lets you choose from five ringer tones, and you can call other users by pressing the call button. It has a multifunction backlit display, so even in complete darkness the screen displays channel, privacy code, battery strength, key lock status, transmit status, ring mode, and voice operation mode.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 2-Way Radio, November 26, 2000
When my family and I went on vacation to Disney World, we carried around the Panasonic KX-TR320 FRS 2-Way Radio. Not only did it look cool, with the Cobalt Blue accent, but the KX-TR320 has rubber plugs, making it water proof...this was very important since my Dad carried it on Splash Mountain, and it kinda got a little wet. My Dad dropped it a few times too at Disney World, making my Mom freak out, but it could take a licking and keep on ticking. The only problem was the tiny buttons, I remember I was trying to use it outside of Body Wars in EPCOT, and I accidently hit the wrong button a few times. It did have great sound quality and range. I would reccomend picking one up for your vacations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Panasonic KX-TR320B FRS 2-Way Radio, January 18, 2001

This review is from: Panasonic Palm-Link KXTR320B 2-Mile 14-Channel FRS Two-Way Radio (Black) (Electronics)
These are great!! I use them to keep in touch with my 10 year old son when he goes off with his friends to the burger joint or grocery store. The range is phenominal. He can be just about anywhere and I can get in touch with him. The voice activated mode is great! The privacy channels help to keep the interference down, as I have found that these types of radios are very common. Unfortunately, I paid more for them elsewhere, wish I had gotten them here at Amazon.com. A hint to all you other mom's out there, if you give these to your children as a gift, they'll love them and won't realize that it's more of a convienence for you than it is a toy for them! Next time they run out without first cleaning their room you can call them right back with out leaving the kitchen!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best audio quality of all that I've tried so far, December 10, 2001

I own both 320 and 325S. I've also tried Motorola FR-60, T289; Cobra FRS-220, PR-1000, PR-900(the latter two are GMRS radios). The Panasonic's are the ones I say "What?" the least in use.

It's not very loud(but also not much distortion), got a tiny PTT button, CTCSS has to be set to zero if you want to scan all activities on the channels, and you have to keep holding down the Monitor button to break the squelch. All minor annoyances.

It's been one year since I bought my first pair of 320. Flip-down mic/ear speaker used to be a reason I bought these, but I never had the need to use them. Vibration alert is nice for really loud places like Disneyland. But when it's too noisy for the ringer, it's also near impossible to hear transmission.

Solid construction except the antenna seems won't last as long as the rest of the unit. Like other people mentioned, I had this dropped to concrete floor from waist level (the belt clip slipped), and it showed no ill effect at all.

With best clarity from all that I've tried, and $20 after rebate, this is a keeper.
