High hopes, good sound, bad volume control.,

This review is from: Panasonic RPHT355 Basic Headphones (Electronics)
A friend and I bought these because:1) They were cheap ($30) 2) They had a long cord (16ft) 3) They had volume control About 6 months after using them, 1 & 2 were still true, but 3 no longer was. When using the volume control, the left speaker would short out, and only if you were lucky enough to get the volume wheel back in the right spot and push it to one side or the other of the casing it was in would the connection be made and sound would return. The majority of the time after about 1-2 minutes of trying to get it to work, I'd just give up. I thought I just got a bad unit, but when my friend's set was doing the same thing at about the same time, I'd have to say it was a manufacturer's problem. Sound quality was pretty good for what I was using it for (computer gaming). I was just about to cut the wires, remove the volume control, and splice back together the wires with electrical tape, but I thought I'd give them one more shot and they were indeed functional after just a few seconds of tweaking. Best to leave a sleeping dog lay, I've leave them be.

Pretty Good, just don't compare them to Sennheiser,

My judgement of these Phones is after 3 years of solid use. After 100s of times accidently getting up with my foot on the cord, the cord still stays in place, without any loss in sound quality. So that takes care of build qualityThe sound, very superb, you can say they hold much detail in visualization of sound for a huge variety of instruments. Sounds i have never heard on my hi fi stereo and my pioneer speakers are produced here with very awesome spacing, reverb replication, sound fading, and surround that i didn't think was possible for a cheapo Headset. I have been hearing instruments that sound as live as in person, something that isn't normal to be heard in my experience. I am not an experienced audiophile, but I do know these phones are pretty decent. Well let's get this straight, Just don't compare this to a carver or Sennheiser headphone that is 300 bucks. These headphones easily beat many basic studio phones running 70 dollars. And anything in this price range for that matter. Another thing is your sound source. My hi fi stereo, sony, didn't really produce much cutting sonic clarity and sounds a bit muffled and underpowered. I thought my headphones were crappy until tonight, i plugged these puppies as one last chance, into my soundcard and was blown away!..Well not like the sennheiser, but still! Just remember the sound will will be as good as your source. I can't recommend these for walkmans, cause its bulky and with a long cord. But i use a tie for it. And most walkmans won't produce the quality to make these sound good. Overall, I am impressed. I give it 5 stars, cause it beats all in its price range and above a little. When you go to the 70+ range, these aren't better, and anything by Sennheiser makes this sound weak.

Good set of inexpensive headphones.,

I bought this particular pair of headphones becuase I finally managed to kill my Sony's.I am very, very glad I bought these headphones. The amount of bass they have is great (I listen to heavy metal almost exclusively, so the more bass the better <g>), especially that it goes up to high volumes without distorting. They are very comfortable and light weight to wear, so when I'm using them on my PC, extended gaming is no problem. The 16 foot cord is a mixed blessing. It's great when I'm playing games on our living room PC and I want to wander over to the kitchen to get another Sprite or something, but bad when I want to plug them into my portable CD player or even my laptop, as I now have 14 feet of cord I really don't need. I agree totally with many of the other reviews. I've heard other headphones in this same price range, and you really do have to buy a much more expensive set to do any better.

I've found these Panasonic headphones to be the best value in personal listening devices I've ever encountered! They're surprisingly durable for their price range. I've owned a pair for four years, and they still work perfectly. Previous similar-model phones I've used lasted only half as long before the sound would start to go in and out (most likely from wire fraying). But the sounds coming out of these is still as full and crisp today as they were when I first got `em! I'm also impressed by the sound quality; I get pretty good surround sound and multichannel stereo from these whenever I listen to CDs, or watch DVDs or digital cable. Also included is a large stereo jack adapter for those big component system earphone jack sockets. The 16-foot cord gives me a pretty good range. I can walk to every corner of my bedroom when I'm listening to my fave platters and still have some cord footage to spare! I can also go right from the TV room to the bathroom without having to worry about missing the ball game when it comes back from commercials! Another plus: the rather comfortable construction & design. With the right adjustments, I don't have to worry about the earpieces of my eyeglasses pushing & rubbing against my head and ears (usually resulting in chafing) whenever I wear them! `Late

GREAT SOUND, GREAT VALUE,
By A Customer

You can't beat these terrific headphones for rich, high-quality sound, sturdy construction and overall value. The selling points for me were the extra-long cord (over 16 feet), the in-cord volume control, and the large, heavily-padded earpieces. These comfortable phones can be worn for hours. They are well-contructed and can stand up to a lot of abuse. I should know. I sat on them more than once with, amazingly, no harm done. But I finally trashed them the other night after accidentally stepping on them, breaking off one of the earpieces. But they were still working! I'm just too lazy and mechanically inept to reaffix the damaged earpiece. So I just bought a new pair. And they were even cheaper than they were a couple of years ago. I highly recommend these headphones.

The best over-ear design headphones in this price range,

-These are great headphones. Their sturdy construction and high sound quality far exceeds that of all the other closed type headphones of this price range that I have used.-The headband and earcups are made of thick, hardshell plastic. The headband has a rubber strap across its inner surface, making it quite comfortable, and the earpieces are thickly padded with covered foam. The earpieces do a good job of keeping sounds in and out. The cord is a 5m (16.4 ft.) split-type that goes into both earpieces. I prefer single-sided cords, but at $30, you can't complain. The plug is of a 3.5mm (.125 in.) straight-type (not L-shaped)stereo gold-plated design, and comes with a 6.3mm (0.25 in.) large gold-plated stereo plug adaptor. The overall construction of the headphones is reasonably sturdy. They're a little large for some people's definition of street wear, though. -The sound quality of these headphones is excellent. I have tested them with a wide variety of music styles, all without any noticeable sound problems. They handle high bass levels without problems. With an impedence of 22 ohms/1kHz, a sensitivity of 102 dB/mW, and a frequency response of 10 Hz to 27 kHz, they are more than capable of providing high quality sound in any situation--although they might not be the best thing for studio use. -All around, a good set of 'phones. There are better headphones out there, but they cost a lot more. These are the best I've found in this price range.

Best Earphones for the money,

These earphones are amazing for the price. One thing that might bother some people is the really long cord. It's probably got a two foot cord, but which is useful for me, might bug other people. These earphones are gonna get the job done on bass and good music. I highly recommend these to everyone!

I'm sure you've seen the specfications for these headphones... Frequency Response, 10Hz to 27kHz; 40mm drivers; 16ft Cord; Volume Control IN Cord; dual Gold connectors. There are headphones with similar specifications selling for 2-4x as much.Anyway, I have had these headphones for 5 years and they are really fantastic. The cushioned leatherette earcups, the frequency response, etc.. all are a pleasure. These headphones are real helpful when watching those great movies when the kids are asleep. You don't miss a beat, literally.

There's a large market for headphones in the $20 to $40 price range, and this set is among the best. The earcups rest comfortably against the side of your head without pressing into your ear at all. I find that I can wear these headphones for hours on end without getting sore ears, which would happen with several other similarly-priced headphones I have tried. The level of sound blocking done by these earcups is phenomenal. You can wear them without even plugging them in and enjoy a significant reduction in ambient noise. This also adds to the quality of sound you get when listening to music, particularly in noisier environments. My only complaint is the volume knob in the cord. The knob sticks out symmetrically from both sides of the plastic housing, so it's impossible to tell which direction to rotate it to increase or decrease the volume without either trying and listening, or looking at the black-on-black markings, which are very hard to see. These work great with an iPod, I find that leaving the headphone volume knob turned up all the way (which essentially means that it's passing the signal through without dampening it) and the iPod around half volume is a comfortable listening level.

These headphones offer very good isolation (I have missed a few telephone calls because I could not hear the phone ring), they also have satisfying sound especially for those who want their bass heavy. These are great headphones for the average audio enthusiast. If you are into the "audiophile" sound go with some Grado's (at over twice the price of these are still a great value). Admittedly these headphones do not have the greatest detail in response, and the bass is a little too "there" to be linear. If you find the detail lacking and want to experiment with your headphones you can try adding sound deadening material to the inside of the housing and removing the felt from the back of the driver. Also if you "burn in" these headphones for a day or two the sound does improve.
