2.0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive product but poor sound, July 22, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Panasonic RQ-E27V Portable Cassette Player (Electronics)
My old Sony broke so I purchased this one after reading several reviews. Quite frankly, the sound is surprisingly poor. Even my 5 year old Sony sounds better than this.

1. Hiss: Listen to the radio and you will get this when the volume is turned on above 3. 2. Bass: It has XBS, but once you turn it on, 'bass' is going to dominate the music. 3. Clarity: For instrumental music such as jazz or classical, this does a decent job. However, when listening to vocal music, the high octaves sound as if someone recorded it using a very dull microphone.

All in all, a very disappointing purchase. I think you could spend your [price]on something else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product! Excellent Price! A+++++, June 11, 2001
This review is from: Panasonic RQ-E27V Portable Cassette Player (Electronics)
This unit is an excellent buy. It provides great sound quality and has fantastic features such as: one AA battery operation, 33 hours of playback, 20 Key Presets, an Extra bass system, Auto Reverse and a very appealing compact and slim design. This is the smallest and thinnest walkman, I've ever purchased. The unit is so light you won't believe it. I love the large LCD screen and unique design. I've purchased high-end walkmans which cost twice the price and this unit is easily comparable.

I've gone through about five "walkman-type" cassette players (Sony and Aiwa), and if I had to buy another one, I'd get this again.
I avoided the Panasonic brand, frankly, because it sounds generic. Now I wish I'd tumbled to it sooner.
My requirements are simple: a cassette player with auto-reverse, a belt clip, and FM radio. The belt clip is the worst feature of this device, unfortunately everyone else has gone to this stupid hinged style, which tends to fall out if it's not really well clipped in. It broke, and so I called the 800 number in the user brochure, and they sent me out a new clip for free. A HUMAN BEING answered the phone!
The sound is fine, and it handles the cassettes well. (Cassettes from the library are often a bit worn, and my previous Sony didn't play them well, dragging and slowing. No problems with this one.)
The buttons are laid out very sensibly -- they aren't labeled, which at first seems to be a problem, but your finger figures out very quickly which is which.
I don't understand how they're able to get a single AA battery to work as well and last as long as two AA batteries usually last in other brands, but I'm pretty pleased with it.
The radio has digital tuning, and a lock switch, but the buttons are stiff enough (unlike the Aiwa models I've seen) that you don't have to have the lock on to keep it from accidentally changing stations.
Another person complained that the tuner isn't very powerful, and I suspect that may be true, but since that's not what I use it for principally, it's not a big drawback.
One marketing oddity: it comes with four AA batteries in the package, which (with the package labeling) suggested to me that you could load it up with more batteries and get longer uninterrupted play life. That's not the case, it only accepts one at a time. I use rechargables, but I get plenty of life out of them with this player.
One final note -- this is a RUGGED player. I use it while bicycling to and from work; recently I fell, and it hit the pavement so hard the cassette bounced right out of it and the case separated partly. I pushed it back together, retrieved the cassette, and it plays just fine.
