Rugged durability is the name of the game--at least it is for the Panasonic RQ-SW48V. As part of the Shockwave line of products, this cassette player was able to withstand a variety of challenges.
The RQ-SW48V is water-resistant: an unplanned drizzle wasn’t a problem, and a clever locking system kept a cassette from bouncing into a puddle when the unit was accidentally fumbled. The system comes with a sports-friendly handgrip, so dropping the player shouldn’t be an issue, as long as you use the grip.

My good old 1980's yellow sony walkman sport finally died. So after tons of searching I bought another Sony. Big mistake, they don't have the features or durability of the good old walkmans. I avidly listen to books on tape while doing home improvement projects. This Panasonic is the best. The auto reverse works well. The door stays shut even when knocked around a bit and the concrete, paint and stain have mostly just wiped right off. The weird hand strap clips to my belt loop with a carabineer(not included) and away I go. I use the wimpy sony for in the car.

It's a fine piece of equipment and I'd be pleased with it except for one thing. It auto reverses automatically and if you just want to play one side of a tape, you're out of luck. It goes on and on and on and never seems to shut itself off. I like to fall asleep to half an hour of soft music. Having it play over and over all night is not what I had in mind. I would not have purchased it if I'd known this.
