Excellent Sound, Clunky Remote,

The sound quality from this speaker system is excellent.
The only quirk of the system is the remote. The buttons are not labeled very well and several of them have multiple uses depending on what mode the system is in. This is understandable, given that this is a multifunction product. The real problem here is that the remote will not work with a universal "learning" remote because there is no "one button" to do most things. Several presses are required to switch to Aux, for example. The problem is solved by purchasing a high end remote like a Harmony. But it's a shame that this step is necessary.

This is a nice looking system by far but I never got to enjoy it. I got everything set up and when I went to turn the power on it made a bunch of not so good sounds.. and the on the display said CHGR ERR. Which means the disc changer is jammed. Did what the book told me to do when this message pops up which is turn the power off and back on to reset it. So I did and the same message and grinding sounds. I called their tech support number they told me to get it serviced at this oe place that is an authorized repair shop over 2 hours from where I live. That means I would have to spend that time driving there and back twice (once to drop it off and then to pick it up) 8 hours of my week gone right there. I just contacted amazon.com and I'm returning it for no cost on the shipping. Save me some gas money this way.
All in all it's a very nice system but if you are going to get a 5 disc changer get it with a large drawer instead of these ones that stack the disc on top off each other mainly for this reason they seem to jam alot. I had a 5 disc changer with the large disc drawer that was like a tunrtable type and it lasted me 7 years before it died and it was great. My stereo system has a a stackable disc changer like this dvd sytem has and after only 6 months it started jamming all the time. I do not reccomend this system at all unless it's for looks!!!

I wanted something relatively small and easy to use (like a Bose), but refused pay major Bose $$ for a product with a poor reliability record.
The Panasonic is easy to set up and sounds great. Also purchased the Panasonic SH-FX85 Wireless Multi-Room and it also meets my expectations.

Great sounding system,
This review is from: Panasonic SC-PT660 5 DVD Home Theater System (Electronics)
The SC-PT660 sounds great, is easy to set up and use, and is priced right at under $300. The optical digital input is a feature many similarly priced systems do not have.

Panasonic PT660 - Great Value,
This review is from: Panasonic SC-PT660 5 DVD Home Theater System (Electronics)
I purchased the Home Theater System based on use/performance/price for our open floor plan kitchen/family room (approx. 22 x 18). This system is more than adequate and impressive. Setup was simple and straight forward. I was disappointed that Panasonic 'saved' 3 cents by not finishing one side of the sub woofer cabinet - there is a particle board side that is visible if you face the sub woofer speaker forward. (A call to the store highlighted that forward positioning of speaker is not needed for sub woofers since it is a very low frequency speaker). And, due to no fault of system, I can achieve improved sound by purchasing the wireless remote system ... checking prices as we speak.
Would I buy again or recommend this system - Yes ... and I have purchased a second system for a gift.

I bought one of these systems to compliment my Panasonic Viera HDTV, as the "Viera Link" feature seemed pretty sweet.
I'm not going to lie, the audio quality and picture quality of this system are indeed very good, but that's about the only positives I can come by. I am yet to be able to hook up the rear speakers to this system as the cords are not long enough. At their current length, they do not even go halfway through the living room. Since I've had the system, the center speaker has never even worked. I'm not sure if this is because the rear speakers have never been connected or what, but no sound ever comes from the center speaker. Sure, I can buy a wireless add on to have the speakers work, but I'm not paying the $120 Panasonic wants just so I won't have to run a wire to the other side of my room. The Viera Link function isn't as intuitive as it could be. It's great being able to control the volume of the system with the TV remote, but you can't control the DVD player with the TV remote, so I still have to use the two remotes. Another major problem is with the 5 CD changer. Instead of having a turntable type setup, there are five individual trays that are stacked on top of one another, with disc 1 starting at the top and disc 5 ending at the bottom. This is what I find a bit weird with the system; whenever you open one of the trays numbered 1-4, all trays below it will open as well. So if you open tray 1, all five trays open, tray 2, trays 2-5 open, so on. This makes it extremely hard if you are trying to put in or take out multiple discs, because you have to keep repeating the same steps over and over again. Probably the biggest problem with this system is the lack of media it supports. Don't expect to play DIVX discs with this system as they're not supported, which is pretty pathetic considering the price. My $50 Philips DVD player even plays DIVX, so why does my $280 Panasonic system not?! There are also no region codes available for this player (which allow you to play out of region DVDs) which again, my $50 Philips system has. Leave it to the Japanese to make something overly difficult. All in all, I cannot recommend this theater system due to its lack of features and overall buggy operation. Do not spend the money Panasonic wants for this set up when other manufacturers make more viable options for less.

I am almost 100% satisfied with this purchase. When I bought it I didn't check all the features it would have. I was looking for any home theater with panasonic's viera link to connect it with my TV and as soon as I saw the price of this one, I bought it. The price seemed like a bargain to me, only $270!. I just opened the box this weekend since I had to send it from Miami to Venezuela witch is where I live, and it only took 10 minutes of my time to set it up end enjoy it. The sound quality is great, no complains at all. The viera link works very good allowing one touch to control my tv, so I don't have to watch tv with two remotes any more. It has 5 trays for dvd-cd, also Ipod dock to connect your Ipod (it didn't work with Iphone), am-fm radio turner, wireless capacity for rear speakers in case you bought them. Bottom line, great purchase. The only con I've found so far is that the wire for rear speakers is not long enough to place it along the wall and then down to the level where your ears should be when you are watching tv and my livin room is not that big so the best would be to buy the wireless rear speakers. Other than that it's been a good purchase
Pros: Great sound quality, price, and easy set up Cons: Not enough speaker wire for the rear speakers

I purchased this Item refurbished, and I am happy to say that I was very satisfied. To me it seems completely new, and runs great. No missing components or paper work. The system plays great, easy set up, and quick start up.
The speakers are good, and I was surprised by power of the sub. You can play music and movies from your iPod, along with viewing photos. They only thing is that you can't watch the movie through the HDMI output, only AV. Don't forget to set your iPod's movie setting output to TV, othewise you might not be able to see the movie from your iPod on your TV. You don't have much option to manually control all aspects of sounds, but it does have good pre-sets. The wire length for the speakers are long enough to set up the surround speakers in a small room, but bigger rooms might require some additional length by splicing. I wasn't able to fully plug in the FM wire to its hub, so I used a little bit of electrical tape to keep it in place. Overall, if your looking for something good to play your music and movies and don't want to worry about fine-toning everything, than this is a great buy. I am very happy with the purchase and I really enjoy my media now.

I bought this refurb thru Amazon from Good As New Electronics.
Happy with price and service from GANE. Unit works great and makes TV listening much better for my old ears. Everything has worked great for a month until a few days ago, when the Viera link stopped fully working. After a couple of hours on the phone with tech service at Panasonic, reseting both the TV and HT a few times, it turned out to be the HDMI cable which had worked fine until now. Fortunately I had a couple of extras. One of three fit tighter than the other two--and worked again. All three HDMI cables were from eForcity, so go figure. The cables for the rear surround were too short and I needed another 15 feet--what a stupid design! I did figure out how to open the speakers which have terminal lugs inside, and the pins in the molex connectors going into the main unit can be removed. but I opted to just cut the wires to the rear surround speakers and add 18 feet of 22awg speaker wire using common butt splices--works great. I don't think I would have liked the wireless version because of the additional pwoere requirement and potential interference problems. I think the unit is well worth the price as a refurb, but gave it a 4 because of the rear speaker wire length (25') and lack of paint on one side of the subwoofer. I think more inputs like digital coax would be nice too. I have not had any problems with the DVD player mechanism, but I do treat it with care because it seems a bit complex and delicate, but okay if you pay attention.

I bought the Panasonic SC-PT660 5 DVD Home Theater System in Jan 2009. The wires for the surround speakers were too short. The woofer speaker is not finished on the left side. The instructions for operating the system were vague and complicated at the same time. The loading cassette which is built in the system and hold one to five dvds or cd all open at the same time. If you're not using this set in a well-lit place you can have loading problems. For instance if you need to exchange a dvd in tray # 3, the cassette opens trays # 3, 4, 5, making the trays not needed for changing a single dvd or cd exchange, open and close needlessly. This will surely wear this mechanism out sooner.
After just two months of regular use the cassette changer jammed and capturing 5 dvds, three of them rentals. I went through the manual to try to clear it with no luck. I then called the 800 # listed on the manual and spoke to and operator from the Philippines who courteously walked me the through clearing procedure again with no luck. He then directed me to the nearest authorized Panasonic repair shop about 8 miles from my home. The technician at the shop immediately recognized the problem as the exchange system being out of alignment. He admitted repairing many of the same models with same problem. I was grateful that he not only retrieved the 5 dvds but also was able to repair the alignment. I was also grateful that Panasonic stood by their product. The Panasonic was still under warranty so the repairs were free. Something Samsung was unable to do when their home theater carasoule system would lockup when playing certain dvds, or simply wouldn't even load them. I was so frustrated with the Samsung I put it out with the trash. While Panasonic has always enjoyed a great reputation, I gave this system two stars because if it was just one or two players that had this problem, I would've said it was just my bad luck. However, for so many players to have this same "out of alignment" problem, this has to be a manufactures defect. In addition the skimping on the length of the surround speaker wires, the unfinished woofer speaker and the complicated operating instructions for the remote control. Last but not unimportant, the redundant procedure for loading and exchanging dvds & cds is a sure way to wear out the system's mechanics. Sadly this set was obviously contracted out to the lowest manufacture bidder. When this system was first marketed, it sold for about $400, I paid $240 with the shipping included. I figured the dealers were making room for the new BlueRay sets that were coming out and were selling them at cost. But knowing that this system may well eat my dvds (5 at a time) is a little troubling. Other than that the system plays the dvds well and the sound is okay, I don't play cds on it. You know the old saying "Buyer Beware" |
