4.0 out of 5 stars Bravo Panasonic! The hype is true!

2.0 out of 5 stars I broke it.
This is a certainly a good CD player. But why is it so inexpensive? AH, because it wouldn't last as long as others. I have had other CD players before, and dropping them unto the ground happened was nothing special. But this Panasonic Player stopped working only after one time of falling down from my bed unto the floor. If you are a man with care, don't pay attention to...

After reading the glowing reviews, I eagerly bought this CD player as a birthday gift/ workout companion for my husband. I was NOT disappointed!

This sleek CD player weighs half the weight of a walkman, gets 35 hours of playback on 2AA batteries [6 are included], and comes with a remote control [!!!], quality headphones, and a black soft case "jogger pouch" with belt.

So does it skip??? When used as intended -- Aerobics, Walking, Jogging -- I experienced no skips. In fact, I had to shake it violently with both hands ON PURPOSE to even get it to skip. My husband however found that it skips when he starts running at 6 MPH on the treadmill.

In short, it's not perfect, but it's darn close. The headphones fit comfortably. The "crayon sized" remote control with clip makes adjusting volume or selection a simple push of a button. [No more stopping workouts to adjust actual player settings manually!] And the black jogger case is sporty and adequate. [Although the belt, made of an elastic spongy material, looks like it may last a year at most of rigorous workouts.] With the SLSX286J, Panasonic has done a great job of anticipating its customers' wants and at the current price of $71.99, This is an exceptional deal for you definitely won't regret. Highly recommended!

It sounds pretty good through the supplied headphones, but it's not 5-star sound.

It doesn't skip in my normal use (daily commute), it's lightweight, so far (not quite 3 months) it's reliable. The remote is easyo use and has all the functions I need -- including a "hold" button that works independently of the hold button on the main unit.

I use the AC adapter (included) when I listen to it at work, so the batteries only get used for about 5-10 hours/week. I'm still using the last of the three pairs of batteries that are also included -- this player really does run a long time on 2 AAs.

My only nit is that the controls on the main unit are arranged in small clusters, and require a little care to use.

I like it enough, especially for the price, that I bought a second one, for my wife.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best deal out there, September 5, 2001

The one thing I don't hear too much in reviews,of less expensive players,is about the quality of sound. The most important item seems to be if it skips or not. I am fussy about the sound so with this model I took a chance. It sounds great! The earphones were better than I thought they would be also. The inline control is a must and this one is very usable. All features with this player are relevant and work. Even the bass boost. So are there better sounding players for 3 times as much? I hope so. For twice the price? I didn't find any. But for 50 bucks you can't beat this. I have some high end equipment at home and this model is in the ball park. If you want louder and a more distinct sound you have to buy some better earphones. Bring the player to the store and compare with the ones that came with the player. If the new ones don't sound louder then don't buy them! The phones may cost near the price of the player but that is the case with any other player out there. I got some Grado's for 40$. Sony has a set for around the same price. The sensitivity and base response is what you pay for, but your ears are the guide. If you don't need super loudness then the ones with the player may be fine. Oh, and I haven't found that it skips either.

5.0 out of 5 stars as good as it gets, October 17, 2001

definitely on the the finest available, the anti skip function works worderfully, irrespective of the terrain. the weight is also very light. the cd-r and cd-rw functions work very well. i have managed to make my own cd's which is a pleasure to listen when working out. the headphones could be much better. do not do justice to the cd player. ihave replaced them with aiwa xphones. they sound just great.
the remote comes in very handy, could be better if it was wireless.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great bargain for such a good player!, November 5, 2001

I bought this CD Player 3 months ago and after using it extensively I am pretty satisfied with its performance. My previous player was a Sony model and even if Panasonic seems simple and not with all the bells and whistles,it works almost perfectly and will satisfy your needs.
The remote control is very convenient to have, especially if you are on the move. The whole desing isn't something extraordinary and impressive but it works fine and it really deserves its money. The buttons are big enough and you can easily distinguish among them.
I had problems playing some cd's probably because of scratches on the media but in overall I would suggest you to grab the opportunity.
Batteries last quite long but I would prefer to have gotten it with the AC adaptor. Panasonic support is good and they answered fast to my request for the AC adaptor but its on back-order.
Get it and you won't be disappointed at all.In its price category it outperforms a lot of its competitors for sure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Panasonic SLSX286JK - A decent purchase for a killer price, December 11, 2001
By
This review is from: Panasonic SL-SX286J Portable CD Player (Electronics)
I bought this CD Player a couple of weeks back and after using it rather extensively, i had a few points to share. The first impression of this player is rather shocking. Its looks really nice and is very light and compact, but when it comes to music !!! its simply pathetic. NO....the player isnt that bad. Its those really really lousy headphones that come along with it. Panasonic would do rather well NOT to provide one instead of creating such a pathetic first impression. Nevertheless its MUCH beter now, even with a cheap pair of earphones (costing just 5$). So here are my findings.

PROS
¤ PRICE - You can't get anything even half as good for this price, at 50$ its a killer deal.
¤ ESP - It just does NOT skip. Bang it, shake it, drop it, torture it, IT JUST WONT SKIP.
¤ SOUND QUALITY - Its great, that is IF you get yourself a new pair of headphone.
¤ REMOTE - It just makes you wonder how could you ever do without one. Its an ABSOLUTE MUST.
¤ HOLD KEYS - Seperate Hold keys on the player and remote are really handy.
¤ LOOKS - The silver colour player looks MUCH better than the images.
¤ SIZE - Its so compact !!! hardly any bigger than the CD itself.
¤ BATTERY LIFE - I am still running on my first pair....WHEN ??? is it gonna die ?
¤ CD-R CAPABILITY - All my burned CDs worked (but then they also worked with my prev 25$ player)

CONS
¤ HEADPHONES - Its a BIG BIG letdown.
¤ VOLUME - Rather Low, INSUFFICIENT for Public Transport travel. The BIGGEST DRAWBACK of this model.
¤ KEYS - Rather clumsy, but with the remote, you may NEVER need them.
¤ LOW BATTERY INDICATOR - There aint any, but again i guess, it would NEVER be required.
¤ AC ADAPTER - They dont provide one !!!
¤ CARRY POUCH - The straps seem like they couldnt last a WALK (forget a JOG)

I would have given this a 3.5 actually, but given the overall performance and the COST, it gets a 4 rating (rather than a 3 rating). People who intend to use this during travel in public transports (like me) BEWARE this may not be the BEST thing for you. my 25$ Lennox was louder than this. Also count the extra bucks you would spend on buying a decent headphone/earphone. If its shock protection you are looking for, GO FOR IT.

...All in all, weigh your requirements/expectations and then decide according,

3.0 out of 5 stars The Good and the Bad, November 17, 2001

2nd player bought made by Panasonic thru the years and while they work fine they tend to have a lower volume than most others, tough to hear in a noisy environment, bus, subway, etc., this may be why the batteries do last longer than most.

The good for this model:
remote handy and decently designed
long battery life
light and anti-shock works well

The bad:
low volume
model didn't recognize some cdr's and cd-rw's.
included sports pouch kinda small doesn't hold extra cd.
