2.0 out of 5 stars Beware Audiobook Listeners.
This is fine for listening to music cds, it has a good anti-shock feature that prevents skipping. The earphones that come with it are trash, the sound quality is horrible, I switched my sony earphones on it and it was a huge difference. I bought this specifically to listen to audiobooks. MISTAKE! Yes, it has a resume feature where it "saves" your place - kind of...

I had a Panasonic portable CD player that I bought about 10 years ago. Recently, I decided I needed a replacement for it, though the player was still running strong. I've seen all of these new portable CD players from different manufacturers, and I made the mistake of falling for one of these "hip inexpensive new style" players (*ahem* KOSS *cough*). Bad idea.

So I decided to go back to what worked, and bought this Panasonic. In a word: awesome. Very light, very stylish, great AC adapter, quiet, the anti-skip function is superb (and you have the option of turning it on or off), and even the headphones (while far from perfect) do an admirable job.

Sony has cheapened the quality of its discman, and other subpar companies will try to bait you with bright colors and low prices while giving you junk. Panasonic has always made quality consumer electronics, and their portable CD players are no exception. They might be marginally more expensive than the lesser names, but when you have a portable CD player that you like and can depend on, it is more than worth it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality at last!, October 7, 2000
By
This review is from: Panasonic SLSX270 Portable CD Player (Electronics)
I began shopping around for CD players after my last one finally bit the dust after no time at all. (Memorex. A warning.) Being frugal, I looked at Koss and GPX among others but kept hearing the same three-star reviews warning against how cheap the products were. So finally, I figured I can spend more money now for this player, or shell out cash every six months on a replacements.

I got this in the mail and was instantly happy. It's amazingly small and lightweight. (They tell you that, but it's different in your own hand...) It's amazingly battery-efficient. It could go for an extra day or two off batteries my last player said were dead. I took it on the treadmill with me, and no matter what angle or speed I was at, resting on the input screen ahead of me, it never missed a beat. The only so-so thing about the player is it's not very loud. I knew this however from previous reviews and went ahead and bought it anyway. I'm still satisfied, and to compensate that, I'll just buy a headset whose speakers go into your ear, rather than pad the outside. A simple solution to a minimal problem.

It's a great product. There really isn't anything I can say about it that would put it down or degrade it in anyway. It's not terribly expensive compared to some others out there. For its price range, it goes above and beyond for quality; paying for itself again and again.

And lastly, I take this CD player with me to school as well and it survives my backpack unscathed. If it can handle me going to and from classes, it can handle anything. Plus, it has the "hold" feature. For all of you who don't know what that is, it keeps your player from playing if, let's say, it'd been bumped in your bag, thus saving your batteries for music for you, as opposed to your wallet or book or whatever else it was sandwiched up against.

:)

I would like to start by saying that this is a great inexpensive cd player from a well known name: Panasonic. Now there are cheaper ones, many of which I have tried, but they suck. This one however works flawlessly. It is easy to use...good product without the price tag of sony--which are also good but a bit expensive. My favorite thing about this CD player is the 'button-popup' cd relese. There are some problems that prevented me from giving it a perfect score: 1) The bass boost is weak compared to some other brands, (sony has a multi-level base boost has has a couple different bass boost settings.) 2) The button are sometimes pressed when you don't want them to if they are kept in tight areas such as a pocket, but that's the purpose of the hold button ;). 3) The volume 'dial' is not in the easy position to use (not a big problem at all, caused no real problems). 4) the cover open slider is easily inadvertently triggered, but the 'button' method (used by sony, and most other manufactures) is even worse.

4.0 out of 5 stars solid cd player, September 17, 2000

This cd player replaced a dying sony portable player that would skip all time even with the esp on. This Panasonic cd player is smaller (a plus) and is well built and feels like it will last. Sound wise, it can't get as loud or as clear because its output level is 9 milliwatts a channel compared to the Sony's 15. Its sad the portable cd player manufacters don't put this number on the outside of the box because, just as you see how much power an amplifer can produce so you can see before you buy, so should these portable cd players. But, this cd player is great for what it was designed for, active use. You can ride a bike with them, walk, run, mow the yard, ride the bus, and anything else you can think of that doesn't involve water. Oh yeah, the bass boosts aren't that good ethier, because it distorts the bass a little and makes it muddy, but It's hard to tell unless you use good headphones

Pros - styling, size - resistance to skipping - good value

Cons - output level

- bass boost

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Portable CD Player!, September 10, 2000

Panasonic does it again. The SL-SX270 is a wonderful CD player. I just bought one for my daughter (her old Sony finally died), to use primarily in the car when we go on trips. Well, this does not skip at all. We went on a three hour trip, over extremely bumpy highway and back roads, and the Panasonic was flawless! This trip to our cousin's house caused many a skip with her old Sony, which in fairness, had only a 10 second antiskip. The Panasonic is small, lightweight, looks great, and comes with an AC adapter. My daughter was at first attracted to one of the "cool looking" CD players from another brand, which costs a little less money and also carried by Amazon.com, but it has very mixed reviews. We decided on the Panasonic for its reputation - which was absolutely the right decision. It works wonderully well and even plays are own-made CD-R's!! Its just not worth taking a chance to save $20. You can't go wrong with the SX270!

If I had to list the best in the stereo game. Panasonic would be right up there. And it's not hard to see why. I recently received one of the beauties for my birthday and I don't think I'd be jumping to conclusions if I said that this is the best cd player I've ever owned. THIS CD PLAYER MAKES BATTERIES LAST. And the anti-skip is un-parralled to any other. And what's more amazing is it's durability (not a listed feature) I unfortunately dropped mine about a week ago... I was heart broken, because I though I had broke it. But to my surprise... it played as good as it ever did. (Just take my word on that one...don't try it for yourself) And since I'm a native of Wisconsin, I (along with this cd player) am subject to brutal cold in the winters and all kinds of not-so-electronic-friendly weather. This cd player has endured through it all. I have decided to dub this as the "FRANK SINATRA OF PORTABLE CD PLAYERS"... way to go Panasonic.

I bought this CD player for jogging. I was a little skeptical at first thinking that the thing would skip a little. But much to my surprise it performed beautifully! I highly recommend this player to anybody who is looking for a great player for jogging or for a car. It has programmable track memory, bass boost function and lasts approx. 28 hours on two AA batteries! Cool!

I just bought it and it works great its almost impossible to make it skip when you have the anti shock feature activated. You can jog with it and it wont skip. You get alot of bang for buck.

5.0 out of 5 stars At Last...., February 2, 2001

In the begining...I had an RCA cd player...the thing must have weighed 3 pounds. Being the kinda person I am I wasn't going to chuck it just 'cause it wasn't the newest thing. As long as it worked. Last year however, it stoped. I was forced to use my sisters untill my birthday rolled around this year. I spend many an hour compairing Sony, Philips, and all that good stuff. But I kept coming back to this little thingy. It was small, rather round (important to me), and not expincive. While it doesn't have a radio or an MP3 player, if you don't need those things then why pay more for them? I don't, so I didn't. It weighs less than half a pound, sounds great, and plays CD-Rs. What more could you want?

this is the cd player for anyone who wants to buy it once and for all. Other than one or two drawbacks, like the flimsy slot oppener which, although it gives me no problem, will accidentally activate if you handle the product vigorously; or the top buttons which you cannot squeeze it in a tight space without touching, the product is perfectly functional, with very economical use of battery life and sound that really lives up to promise.
