3.0 out of 5 stars Works great - but where do you put it
Throws a decent amount of light and goes on as soon as power goes out. BUT - where do you put it. This would be a 5 star purchase if it came with a wall bracket. You need a shelf - that is about the only place you can put it and the shelf must be in close proximity to a power outlet.

Each time the lights go out due to a momentary surge in the
line, I smile to see this Panasonic spring into action.

The included wall-mount bracket proved to be an extremely
awkward configuration, so I chose to place the unit on a bookshelf opposite my bed. This location serves to camouflage
the side-mount power source/switch/pilot light, and also assures me that my bedroom won't be in darkness during an outage. And the front-facing fluorescent bulb isn't an eyesore on the shelf.

The unit can then be used as a portable, stand-alone source in
any area of need.

I have set it to come on automatically whenever there's an
interruption of power. And it has not ever failed in these
past 4 months.

5.0 out of 5 stars If only FEMA could work this well, September 18, 2005

I bought this one year after a power failure. It was an impulse buy. Once it arrived I put it on the bookshelf and forgot it untill a year later when the power went out and the light came on. It lit up a large living room for several hours. I could unplug it and carry it around easily. And when the power came back on - it simply went off and started recharging. Ah - If only FEMA could work this well.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fantasic power outage light, January 7, 2006

This review is from: Panasonic SQT555W601 Automatic Power-Failure Light (Tools & Home Improvement)
Comparable in size to an encylopedia volume, the Panasonic power failure light can be placed on a shelf, plugged in, and forgotten until the lights go out. The light is provided by a six inch fluorescent tube, which is sufficient to light up a small room well enough to read by. You can set the light to low or high power, but the difference in output seems pretty small. On the low setting, the light lasts between four and five hours. I have three placed in the main areas of my house and they all kick in when the power goes out, making it easy for me to locate lanterns and flashlights in the event that the outage lasts more than an hour or two. I like this light so well that I plan to buy three more in the future.

The only reason the light does not get five stars is ergonomics. The included mount is strange and I would be surprised if anyone uses it. In addition, the power supply connection is on the side of the unit, which can be awkward if you are placing the unit between other items on a shelf. Ideally, the power supply should connect to the back instead.

I took one unit apart and was pleased to see that it uses a standard form factor battery, which should be easy to replace if the original wears out. The fluorescent tube is also a standard size that is widely available. As a result, with a little maintenance, this handy light should last for many years.

After considerable searching and research, I luckily happened upon the Panasonic Automatic Power-Failure Light. Although we have been fortunate enough not to have actually needed the light for a power outage yet, I have tested it and believe it will do a great job. I specifically wanted one that comes on when the power goes off and has a sufficient battery life to stay on for a reasonable length of time so I wasn't fumbling around in the dark hunting storm supplies. I particularly like that it stands on its own but is also portable. Also glad it uses a standard bulb. It would have been nice if they had included round headed wall mounting screws and a template to locate the holes. I'm very pleased with the light and plan to order another for the other end of my house and one for my elderly mother.

5.0 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE for Hurricanes, Power Outages, SURVIVAL!, June 27, 2006

This light has been a GODSEND. Purchased from AMAZON back in 2003, it has saved my family from power outage insanity many times, most recently this past weekend... so I'm back to buy another for our vacation house. Our power was out this weekend on Saturday from 8pm until 4am. This light is so bright that my son and I set the light to "low" on a nearby table and I read books to him. After he fell asleep, I read until 2am... without any indication the power supply was reduced. The light is easily portable, and best of all it stands on its own, which is essential for those of us tired of holding flashlights while trying to work one-handed. BUY! I also recommend the Grundig emergency hand-generator radio, which we had fun winding by hand and listening to during the storm.

5.0 out of 5 stars A bargain for peace of mind and patio, June 30, 2006

This power failure light really gives excellent illumination, even on the low setting it can illuminate a room fairly well. At low setting, you can see everything in the room and can read a book if you are next to the light. At a high setting, you can read a book even several feet away or play poker if it's in the middle of the table.

I bought the ight with a couple purposes in mind. One, I wanted to have an easily accesible light in case of a blackout. I have the light in the room so that it will illuminate if the power goes out. This will help us not only be able to find our way around in the dark, but alerts us to when the power is out- the light is bright enough to wake you up.

The other purpose that I have for the light is as a portable patio light for evening parties. I put it in the middle of the table and my friend and I can play poker in the backyard.

A downside to the lamp is the design- it's kind of an ugly and unwieldy lamp. I wouldn't want to rely on the light as a mobile flashlight because its a little too bulky. Also you can't direct the beam, the light just gives an area glow- it's basically light a vertical light tube.

I'd use a maglight for exploring areas and pinpointing light.

But, this aside, I think this is a bargain for 30 bucks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never be left in the dark again!, March 10, 2006
This review is from: Panasonic SQT555W601 Automatic Power-Failure Light (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought my elderly Mother a light similar light to this one but it had 2 small flood lights on it. I was so worried about her falling in the night if the power went out. She has had it go on automatically a few times already and thanks us everyday for it. Its plugged in and just sits on her fridge and comes on automatically when the power goes out. I just bought 2 of these flashlight-type lights for my house. One for the basement and one for upstairs. It wasnt plugged in 3 hours and a wind storm here in NH took down a telephone pole and our electricity! These are also nice because you just unplug them when they go on and use them as giant flashlights. I wouldnt have a home without them ever again. I highly recommend them to everyone, especially the elderly.
