Product Description

Panasonic SR-MS183 Rice Cooker

Cook up to 20 cups of fluffy, delicious rice with this powerhouse performer by Panasonic. The user-friendly rice cooker makes restaurant-quality rice a breeze thanks in part to its "Advanced Fuzzy Logic" technology, which automatically adjusts the power and cooking time as needed to ensure excellent results every time.

The rice cooker comes equipped with eight pre-programmed cooking options. Choose from four rice settings: white, brown, sticky, and quick cook; or put the versatile unit to work steaming vegetables, slow cooking for up to 12 hours (great for soups and stews), making a cake, or even cooking porridge.

In addition to its simple push-button control panel with an orange LCD display, the rice cooker also provides a 24-hour preset timer, automatic shut-off, and a 12-hour keep-warm function that helps keep cooked rice at an ideal serving temperature. Other highlights include start and keep-warm indicator lights, a dimpled "Binchotan" coated aluminum inner cooking pan, a carrying handle, and push-button lid release for quick access when it's time to serve friends and family.

Sleek and stylish, the compact rice cooker takes up minimal space on the counter, carries a one-year limited warranty, and comes with an array of useful accessories including a measuring cup, a rice scoop, and a steaming basket.

I bought the same model product when I worked in China. I likes the one I got in China and trying to get the same one when I need one in US. But so frustrated, some of the details are missing from the US market product.

1. No timing record to show when the rice will be ready. The product I bought in China, when you start cooking, the timer shows how many minutes left before the rice/ porridge will be done. This is a very neat function. I can know how long my rice will be done and plan my dinner around that. In this product, when you press start, it gives you nothing! you will only know the rice is ready when it start to beep.

2. No water mark for porridge cooking. Again, the product I bought in China, it shows two water marks in the container, one for rice and one for porridge. So I know exactly how much water i need to put in when i cook rice or porridge. The one in US only has the mark for rice cooking. I have to guess how much water to put on when I cook rice. Really? you need to make some guessing on a computerized eletrical product? What is the computer for? Plus, this is nothing more than someone adding a mark in the container.

3. No plastic spoon for porridge. The China product comes with two spoons, one flat spoon for rice and one deep spoon for porridge. This product only has one flat spoon. Now I have to buy a plastic spoon myself.

ALL these are small things, but these details just make me frustrated. Especailly when you are buying the same product with the same model from the same company, why the product in US is much sucker than the product in China? Does Panasonic wants to quit US market?

I've never been able to make wild rice, it was always overcooked or raw. My first rice batch with this machine was a wild rice pilaf. I used chicken stock rather than water, and the brown rice cycle. It came out perfectly, cooked, but still had texture. We've made several batches of thai jasmine rice that have turned out very well. Looking forward to many more batches of various rice recipes. It is fairly easy to clean which is a good selling point. The cookbook that comes with it is very minimal, and the instructions are easy to follow. there are several nice rice cooker cookbooks on amazon that are worth looking into.

Addendum: 22 Nov 1: We've been using this machine to make the various rices (all very good), and started making quinoa with it. This thing really does a great job. My only (minor) complaint is that it doesn't give you a good eta until about 15 minutes or so before it is done, but this is understandable based on the fuzzy logic. I really like this machine!

My brother has this Rice Cooker and he loves it. We used it when we visited him a few months ago, and just fell in love with it. We have been using it for over a week now, and it works perfectly. Just one "quirk", NOT A BIGGY, the clock can only be used in 24 HR military time. It isn't a big deal, as long as you remember that 6:00 is AM and if you want to start the cooker at 6:00PM, you need to set it to start at 18:00. I thought this mode could be changed to 12 HR time, but apparently, per the user guide, it can't be changed. It is NOT a deal breaker. The clock has a battery backup, so that once you set it, you do not HAVE to keep it plugged in to keep the clock synched. We have a spot for it, where we use it and can keep it plugged in. The cooker comes with everything you need, except for the rice and water. It has a rice measuring cup, a non-stick rice paddle, steamer tray and detachable power cord. I haven't found how to change the clock backup battery yet, but I figure I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

UPDATE 07/20/12 We've been using this rice cooker for several months now, we've used the timer function, cooked both regular rice and brown rice with NO PROBLEMS SO FAR. The top sealing plate on the cover comes off with a simple release button to facilitate cleaning it and the bottom of the cover. VERY HAPPY WITH UNIT TO DATE.

Okay, so it says that it can cook 10 cups uncooked rice. Well, by cups, it means, 'their' cup, which is about 3/4 cup in English units. That equates to 15 cups cooked rice. That being said, I was slightly disappointed with the size, but, upon using it, found it to be still ample for my family of five children. When they get bigger and eat more, I will probably want to buy another, cuz I love it that much. I have already tried quick rice, with steamed zucchini on top, perfect; steel cut oats porridge, a hit; slow cooked vegetable soup, perfect flavor; and brownies, to die for (1/4 batch). All in two days.

I purchased the rice cooker as a compromise. I really wanted a zojirushi but could not stomach the price tag. The panasonic had all of the features I was looking for, good reviews, and a decent price (refurb). So, I have been using this machine for a few months and truly love it. It's one of those appliances you don't really NEED but it makes life a little more convenient when you have one. I am not an avid rice eater; probably eat rice about once per week or less. However, I love grains (and pasta) so decided this could be a great multipurpose machine. I also bought The Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook by Hensperger which is invaluable. The most important thing to keep in mind with this machine is that rice needs to be measured in the included measuring cup. I think it measures about 3/4C, however this is considered one cup by the manufacturer. You simply measure your desired 'cups' of dry rice, put it in the cooker pot, add water to the line inside the pot equal to the amount of rice you used, add any seasoning you might want, close the lid, select whichever cooking cycle you would like (white, brown, sticky, etc), and press start. I would recommend rinsing your rice unless you're going for sticky. It does take a while to cook rice! White rice is at least an hour. There's also a quick white rice button which I've never used. You can program the machine to start at a later time, so you can have your rice ready when you come home! My rice has come out perfect every time.

Now, the best part. I have used this machine for many things beyond it's primary purpose. There is a steam function. You can steam veggies. There is a steamer basket that fits above the rice pot.
