5.0 out of 5 stars A fine mix
Willie Nelson presents quite a paradox to me. His is such a distinctive voice, often plaintive and domineering. How is it that he mixes so damned well with others?

With both of their careers going into the dumper, these corporate (...) teamed up to attempt to make a commercially succesful album. The result was pure disaster. Merle has finally come to his senses and has realized he is too old for this (...) anymore. (...)

Willie Nelson presents quite a paradox to me. His is such a distinctive voice, often plaintive and domineering. How is it that he mixes so damned well with others?

He and Merle are a wonderful pairing on "Pancho & Lefty". The songs tell Willie's (and Merle's) kind of stories: they are outlaws, boozers, social outcasts, and lovers of women (maybe all this explains how I can identify with them).

The title song is a hoot. The pairing of "Reasons to Quit" and "No Reason to Quit" makes me laugh. Of course, being lovers of women, they have to cry the blues a bit, which is done marvelously in "Half a Man" and "Opportunity to Cry".

A group of wonderfully written songs, with few gaps. Added to a couple of seasoned legendary voices makes for a can't miss pick. Country music even us urban types can love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid as always, August 22, 2000

This album will always be best known for the Townes Van Zandt title track, as it should be. That incredible song, perfectly performed by Willie and Merle, tends to overwhelm what is otherwise a very solid album. The remaining songs are not as memorable as "Pancho and Lefty" but all are good and well performed. There are no throwaways here. The entire album is produced in a rather easy going style, as you'll quickly hear with "It's my Lazy Day", which embodies that feeling both musically and lyrically. Willie and Merle's voices also combine better than one would expect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Its Not Waylon Jennings, December 3, 1999
By
This review is from: Pancho & Lefty (Audio CD)
Despite the fact that SOME uneducated individuals cannot believe that this is a duet by Willie Nelson and MERLE HAGGARD and NOT Waylon Jennings, this is one of the fine works of country music. I grew up listening to this album and sticking it to the old federales just like old Pancho. Merle Haggard at his finest!

I wouldnt expect a Canadian to know what real good country music is... in other words, this CD is worth the buy, I thoroughly enjoy every song on it. Pancho and Lefty especially. Willie Nelson is the man, I really like listening to him.

5.0 out of 5 stars The CD I can't stop listening to., May 9, 2000

This review is from: Pancho & Lefty (Audio CD)
Being a big fan of both Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson probably makes me a little biased, but I and my friends who don't like country music cannot stop listening to this CD. There is not a single track I don't like. I still listen to it today, 9 months after I bought it. I don't want to go into too much detail, but this CD is the one I'd listen to if I had a front porch to sit on while drinking iced tea on a Sunday evening. The music is all so relaxing. Buy it. You won't regret it.

a must have for haggard and/or nelson fans. shows the strengths of each singer's voice alone and together. if you only buy one album this year -- make it this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Underrated Album From Two Of "Country's Finest., May 7, 2000
This review is from: Pancho & Lefty (Audio CD)
.

. . This album only seems to be thought of in terms of Townes Van Zandt's wonderfull title track which is superbly performed, but ignore the other tracks at your peril !

"Its My Lazy Day" is done in a beautifully laconic style which compliments both the artists and the song. For me,"My Life's Been A Pleasure " was a pure joy and has never been done better, while for musical arrangement I thoroughly enjoyed "Still Waters Run The Deepest"

Not a bad track, in fact the opposite, although I would have preferred "Reasons To Quit"and "No Reason To Quit" to have a few songs in between them but that is only a minor irritation in a first class album.

5.0 out of 5 stars The First one will not tbe the Last one playing in your mind, July 17, 2000
This review is from: Pancho & Lefty (Audio CD)
The Title track is what keeps bringing me to put this CD in my player every morning and every night . The others are great ways to show the talents of these classic sorrow country singers. With Reasons and No Reasons to Quit also filling that jukebox in your mind with a number of good songs to be caught singing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Willie, and especially merle are not losers., December 7, 2002
By
Steve_Harrison (oh ree gon, United States of America) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pancho & Lefty (Audio CD)
Willie Nelson has made alot of good music, but Merle Haggard, is defenately the man. Merle has the most powerfull, and at the same time, most smooth voice there is. Merle, is by far, the best vocalist in recorded music history. Throughout his career, Merle has shown his ability to sing in several diferent styles. Merles lyric writing ability is also amazing. He can tell a complicated story in a simple way, that is easy for people to understand, and although telling it simply, the listner is still able to understand the complicated meaning. Merle's songs can differ so much from each other, in vocal style, and sound, that it is impossible to make a judgment of his musical abillity by listening to just one song, or even one album. No matter what type of music a person enjoys listening to, a song or songs have been recorded by Merle Haggard, that they would love, if they ever get the chance to hear it. Many of todays, not only country stars, but stars of other music genres have used merle's style as a foundation for their own. Get this album, but don't stop there. Check out some more of his albums as well.

Disapointment is not possible
