This is a short, concise biography of one of the greatest champions to play professional tennis on any surface. Only 36 pages in length, way too brief for such a legend, it expands on what this man had to say about himself off the court. Even when you read his earliest biography, "Man with A Racket" you know very little about his rise to the peak of professional tennis players because he was so close-mouthed off the court. Sadly, few of his contemporaries will talk at length about him. Winning was not his only way. When, at 18, he joined the Kramer tour and went head-to-head against Jack Kramer he was on the losing end, 96 to 27 against him. The real story is that, to him, that was his education and he never was behind any tour afterward. Speaking to Art Larsen (U.S. National Champ '51) about his remarkable career he never spoke much about Gonzales, having lost twice to him. Why? You never speak about your humiliations, if you're the son of a policeman. But, they both agreed on one player, Lew Hoad. Both of them feared Hoad's powerful serve, forehand and over-head smash. So much for side notes. Having so little information about such a legendary figure, is like having just 36 pages of Babe Ruth for baseball. One hopes things will change about this great man.
