Gr 6 Up-These thorough, lively, straightforward biographies will be a boon to teachers and students. They are well designed and suited for young people beginning to tackle more challenging reading, research, and writing skills. The chapter breaks are logical and well spaced, and each chapter is organized into meaningful and well-labeled topics and subtopics. The exposition is moved along and highlighted by the frequent use of footnoted quotations. Supplementary first-person commentary by contemporaries of the subjects or historians contribute significantly to the texts' authenticity. Black-and-white photographs and reproductions are well used in both titles. Neither subject is portrayed as a saint or a villain.
