Review

Praise for Malice:

((star)) "This nail-biter will keep readers glued to the story until the very last page is turned.... Wooding has fashioned an elaborate fantasy in which the world is dark and the peril is real." - School Library Journal, starred review

"The fast-paced story line and whimsically dangerous setting will capture plenty of attention. Even more eye-catching are the interspersed sections where comic book panels replace textual narrative... making this a memorable multimedia experience." - Publishers Weekly

"What seems to be a typical horror plot takes several delicious twists as the teens learn more about their surroundings.... The creative formatting, fast pace, and classic horror elements will surely satisfy any teen who loves a good scare." - The Bulletin for the Center of Children's Books

Artwork: (5/5) In full colour, the graphic novel's art style suited the story's quirkiness very well.

The story starts with a game of skullball, throwing you right into the macabre action Chris Wooding is famous for. This new game gives a a fast paced intro into the world of Seifer Tombchewer. It sets the stage for the new remodel of the prince and pauper story. With Seifer Tombchewer as the pauper in this tale, he has to be a ringer for the missing prince. As it happens, Prince Talon Pandemonium is missing and for a month now too. With national stability at risk, Seifer was brought into the castle at the almost secrecy by a band of miget spies on the order of a crotchety advisor. As a mountain boy, he has no idea how be royal or lead armies, and no time to learn. Thrust into diplomatic issues with the bordering nation, Seifer is put to the test. Facing threats from not only the other nations but from inside the Darkling nobility, will Seifer manage as prince?

Fooling the people in the royal castle won't be easy for Seifer, but with a little humour and some really great lines, it makes the task seem not so bad. With witty side characters and one strong main character, Chris Wooding weaves a new twist on the classic tale of the prince and pauper. Action, humor, and macabre, Chris Wooding with the help of debut artist Cassandra Diaz creates a new world for people to dream about. Set in the dark backgrounds of the Darkling Realm, the splashes of red and orange make each scene stand out as Seifer goes about his life. Beautifully done, on all accounts.

I love this book so much. Great story with great jokes, you don't lose a beat with the fact that it's a graphic novel. I think that as a graphic novel it makes it better. A good read, one that I have read plenty of times.

So if you're in for winged people, missing royalty, and crotchety old advisors, this book is for you. If not, well you're missing out on this awesome tale.

I've read some of Chris Wooding's other books, and was ready to dive headfirst into Pandemonium. It did not disappoint. Simplistically beautiful artwork combined with witty and humorous dialogues, quite possibly, make this one of the best books ever written.

Wooding takes you on an adventure through the eyes of Seifer Tombchewer, a handsome and talented captain of the local Skullball team. He longed for something more than the life of a boy who lived in the mountains, and got it. Kidnapped from his remote village, he awakens to find the Lord Defender of the Realm, Prince Talon Pandemonium, has mysteriously vanished. His job is to impersonate the missing prince until he is found. And really, how hard can it be?

I found myself laughing through the whole story. Wooding provides a thoughtful array of characters in a story of magic and excitement told from a perspective that is not often heard - the Darklings'. Wooding takes the famous saying "Be careful what you wish for" to a whole new level with Pandemonium. Now, all we can wish and wait for, is the sequel.

Brilliant writing, witty, fast paced and fantastic artwork. All you would want in a graphic novel. Have a 10 year old son who hates reading - pretty much worse than having teeth pulled to get him reading, but he thoroughly enjoyed Pandemonium. Classic Prince and Pauper tale set against the Darkling Realm. Skullball is similar to Quiddich except you don't need a broomstick, since the hero has his own set of wings.

Enjoyed this graphic novel very much, finding myself literally laughing out loud through parts of the it. First book I've ever read from Chris Wooding, and I will definitely be looking into more of his work. Can't wait for the next chapter and more of Siefer Tombchewer!

Our story begins with a game of Skullball, which seems like a dark parody of Quidditch. Young Seifer Tombchewer is the star of his team in Crowscale Village, bent on defeating the opponents from Bear Gully. I guess I should mention that Seifer has wings. Actually, everyone in his kingdom is winged in this cheerfully dark new graphic novel from author Chris Wooding and illustrator Cassandra Diaz.

Seifer's Skullball team manages to pull off a win, and then we meet the boy's grandpa. I was thinking "Tombchewer" was a hokey attempt at a fantasy moniker, but then I learned that Seifer's grandpa "hasn't been quite right ever since he ate something poisonous that fell asleep in his porridge." The man literally gnaws on gravestones. He also regularly hunts his cat, knife and fork in hand, hoping to eat it, too. (There's another great cat joke later in the book.)

So this book isn't the kind of dark fantasy that takes itself way too seriously; instead it's peppered with lively humor. And Seifer's going to need a good laugh now and then, considering he's about to be kidnapped from his mountain village and ordered to impersonate a missing prince. Seifer gets it all wrong, but he gets it right in unexpected ways. He makes a couple of friends and a couple of enemies. He survives various attempts on his life and muddles around trying to help the kingdom.

Wooding gives us a nice array of characters, from the cynical Prime Minister (Master Lumbago) to the little trio of red-cloaked, masochistic thuglets known as the Velvet Spies. We also come across some suitably horrid villains, as well two princess sisters and a clever, dynamic kinda-girlfriend for Seifer, who is now known as Prince Talon.

Cassandra Diaz's dynamic artwork has a definite anime influence.
