the pandigital black is really a great machine. It's a wonderful e-book reader and a very handy android. As an e-book reader, it's very lightweight and the pages are easy to turn. You can hold it with one hand and turn the pages with the same hand easily. It works well with either hand. You can even turn the pages back to the when you were on before with no problem. It has a bookmark capability so you can mark your place and go back to the quickly and easily, or if you just let it go to sleep when you turn it back on it comes right back to where you were when it went to sleep.

The only problem with it is that it's slow to boot up, but when you consider all the things that it has to turn on. It's not too bad. You cannot go to android.com to download stuff you need to go to freewarelovers.com, but that site has tons of stuff and let you download whatever you need. You can even download Kindle app that will let you use Kindle books from Amazon so you're not stuck just using Barnes & Noble. The Barnes & Noble site is very easy to use and their software is very simple once you get used to it. You can save a lot of money using e-books rather than regular books. I bought my Scriptures for $64 for the regular set, but I bought my E Scriptures for $3.99 from Barnes & Noble and then I was able to download it from the LDS church for free at freewarelovers.com. the free Scriptures actually worked much better than the ones that I paid for and they came with hymns too.

The black machine is better than the white because it comes with 2 GB of RAM rather than the 1 GB that the white machine has, don't be fooled into thinking they're the same thing. They're not. Another thing that's really nice is you can use the the pandigital while it's plugged in and charging so you always have a full battery for when you're out doing things. You can get a good faux suede case for it on Amazon for less than six dollars. It's a very nice case. I love mine. The cases for most of the other e-book readers run between $29 and $79. Why pay that much. If you don't have to for basically the same thing. I would recommend getting the three stylus pack from Amazon to go with it. I don't like the stylus that comes with the machine but three stylus pack has a nice soft rubber head and works very well without scratching up your screen. The company recommends that you don't use a screensaver as it already has one built-in in with the screensaver you don't get as good of the touch screen capability.

All in all, this is a really nice machine and I really love mine. I checked out the Kindle and the and a couple of others before I bought this one and a much happier with it in any of the others. I would definitely recommend it to my friends or anyone else.

i bought this Pandigital e reader for my wife as a birthday gift. As she likes to read alot i figured that this might be the perfect gift. It was, sort of.
Before this e reader, I did get her a Nook Touch from B&N. My wife was hoping to be able to download free book's from the public library system and the person from B&N said it would be able to do that function. Guess again!!!! I found out that the Nook Touch is NOT formatted for Overdrive (the public library system) for free e book downloads, but the Nook Color at $249 and the original Nook at $119 were. Being disgusted, I returned the Nook and bought this Pandigital Multimedia Novel instead. WARNING!!!!!!!!!!! Don't buy this thinking your getting a tablet computer like an I Pad.
As an e reader, it's a nice device (to a degree). Set's up real easy. Color quality isn't bad. Holds real nice in the hand for reading and she has had no difficulties doing any reading with the device. It even has a setting for reading at night. And, best of all, it is formatted to the Overdrive operating system for free public library's e book downloads but you do have to have Adobe Digital Reader downloaded to your computer and hook up the USB cable to get your books. You also have to use the USB cable to download books from B&N, Amazon and other online e book sellers as well. They wont download wireless. Wifi capabilities are good as it's internet browser works fine, however speed isn't the most stellar due to a low end processor. Their are some app's already installed as it runs on an Android 2.0 system, but don't count on going to the Android Apps store. We tried to download app's for Fox News, Amazon, and a few others, FORGET IT!!!!!!!!!!! Also, the battery life between charges is ok, not great, but ok. You can read for a about 4 hours straight, but then it will need to be recharged. And you cant charge the unit in the car using the USB port, but they do sell car chargers for this device. It's a Chinese made product. You can draw your own conclusions.
All said, as a reader it works fine. However, if your looking with more functionality, save your money and buy a tablet computer.

It pains me to give this product (Pandigital Novel 2 GB 7-Inch WiFi Multimedia Tablet and Color eReader) a poor rating, because it could have been great. I bought it about 4 weeks ago and have spent countless hours working on it, filling it up with free apps, eBooks and multimedia contents. Just when I thought I finally got a useable system, disaster struck! But let's start from the beginning...

The Pandigital Novel attracted my attention because it looks like a cross between the Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble NOOK Color. I know that when used as an eBook reader, the Novel is probably not as good as neither Kindle nor Nook. But it is very inexpensive, and seems to be more flexible than a dedicated eBook reader. For example, when compared to Kindle, the Novel has the following advantages:
- Larger display (7" vs. 6")
- Color touch screen (especially useful for magazines and children's books)
- Can download free Android programs for reading other eBook formats
- Can handle more multimedia files (photo, music, and some video formats)
- Memory expansion through external SDHC card

When compared to Nook Color, the Novel is:
- Significantly lighter (7 oz vs. 15 oz)
- Available at half the cost (if you can shop around and wait for sales).

My initial impression on the Novel was less than favorable. The main problem is that its processor speed is too slow. The machine takes about 1 minute to boot up. The touch screen needs about 0.5 second to register any command. Every program launch is preceded by 5-10 seconds of blank screen. Web page refresh takes 20-30 seconds, and so on. It was truly frustrating in the beginning. But eventually, I was able to train myself to slow down enough for the machine to catch up.

The usefulness of Android market is greatly over-rated. Novel runs an ancient Android 1.5 operating system. So most new apps are not available. That means NO ANGRY BIRDS! You can forget about YouTube and Amazon "Free App of the Day", too. Fortunately, I was able to download the two most important programs from external web sites, namely:
- A free eBook reader (appropriately named `FBReader')
- A free RPN calculator (appropriately named `RPNCalc')

With FBReader installed, I then went to 'Project Gutenberg' site (look up 'gutenberg dot org') and downloaded dozens of classical books for free. Some are even available in audio book formats, which allow me to both READ and HEAR the same book from my Novel.

The Novel has very limited video capability. It is supposed to support MP4, but only in SP (simple profile). Most of the MP4/AVI files I tested cannot be decoded. Fortunately, I found a program to download MP4 files from YouTube using my 'real' tablet (the VIZIO VTAB1008). After that, I was able to show off "Who's on first?" and "Duck Season! Rabbit Season!" on my Novel. Oh life was good... but not for long.

Right from the beginning, I have had intermittent problems in booting the machine. Initially, I was still able to boot up after several retries (sometimes with the AC adapter connected, sometimes without). But as of yesterday, this machine is no more... It has ceased to be... This is an EX-MACHINE!

Amazon doesn't have any machine available for exchange, so my only option left is to get a refund. This is such a pity. But frankly, after investing so much time into this machine only to have it die on me, I'm not sure I can go through it again. For those of you who still want to try the Novel, I can only say: GOOD LUCK!

[Update on Oct 23, 2011]
I returned the Pandigital Novel and purchased the Pandigital Planet (R70A200) for about the same cost. The Planet is a much better tablet because it runs Android 2.2, so it is able to run most apps such as Angry Birds Rio, Amazon AppStore and Kindle. Its media player is compatible with most video formats, and YouTube works fine.
