Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
What the iPad hath wrought! It seems you can't turn around without hearing about yet another tablet device being introduced (or, in the case of HP, discontinued!) Most of the higher end ones, starting with Apple's iPad and Motorola's Xoom, along with recent offerings from Sony, Samsung, and others, run around $500 at this point.

This table, in contrast, runs around a Benjamin, or about 1/5 of that.

Does it give those other guys a run for their money?

What do you think? Of course not. The manufacturing costs of those other tablets are higher than the retail price of this one. Corners are cut in many places, including the screen (both resolution and how it interacts with your finger) and processor (the one in this table is somewhat slow), as well as ergonomics (this table is a bit heavier, and not as sleek).

But all that said, and accepted, the question is: Does this table merit consideration as a starter? Or perhaps as a second tablet to use in places where you don't trust your high end baby, or in the hands of your kids who will probably drop it and kill it in a week?

The answer: Yes, absolutely. As long as you understand the limitations.

This table features the Android 2.0 operating system. To put that in perspective, the higher end recent tables are running version 3.0, and your phone is probably running 2.2 or 2.3. (That is, if you haven't succumbed to the church of Apple). This means not all Android apps will work on this tablet. It also means the tablet doesn't genearlly support Flash. It does have a low quality YouTube app that is all but worthless. (I will add, to quiet the smart alecs among you, that, yes, you can play tricks and "root" this device and install all kinds of cutesy stuff...but most people aren't going to do that, and even those who have tried have had mixed results).

But you can absolutely run the essential basics under Android 2.0, which includes a browser, e-book readers (Amazon's Kindle comes pre-loaded on this one, but you can install Barnes & Nobel's Nook software, as well, if you wish), mail apps, and most other text-y based standard applications. You can't use this with Google's Android Market, but you CAN use it with Amazon's AppStore, which will give you access to pretty much all the apps you might want.

So how well does it perform those basic applications, such as e-book reading and web surfing? Pretty well. Is it liquid smooth? No. But it is responsive enough to be pleasant to use. You will definitely some jerkiness in certain operations, but nothing that anyone should consider a deal killer. The screen, while modest in resolution (800x600) is bright enough to allow pleasant reading. This table supports Adobe Reader, which allows you to read .pdf files on it, as well.

This table has a resistive type touch screen, rather than the much much much more responsive capacitive based type of screen found on the higher end screens. This means you may have to push harder to get your finger touches to register. If you're used to higher end tablets (or a decent touchscreen phone), you'll definitely notice this.

The battery seems to last about 6 hours after a couple of conditioning charges. In the realm of readers/tablets, that's no better than fair, and it's downright anemic compared to dedicated readers such as Amazon's Kindle--although those readers aren't nearly as versatile as this.

Along with the features noted, this tablet also supports the playback of mp3 music files and mp4 format video files. There's a media expansion slot that supports up to 32Gb size cards.

Some other nits: Booting up on this tablet is relatively slow compared to the experience on the higher priced competition. Responsiveness of the screen to changing the orientation (horizontal/vertical) seems pretty questionable: Sometimes it's too sensitive, sometimes not sensitive as I'd like.

On the whole, this isn't the greatest tablet on the market, or even the greatest tablet in my home.

But given the price, and assuming you are keeping your expectations in check, this is an excellent tablet for the price.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, but very, very low end September 21, 2011
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I have both a Sony Reader and an iPad, and so I have much to compare this to.

First of all, if you are looking for a Reader, the Novel is an OK choice. Not only does it have Kindle Reader pre-installed (and is priced cheaper than a Kindle), it allows you to buy ePub books using your Barnes and Noble account, and it also surfs the Web. I love being able to install color photos as well as the books. However, it weighs twice as much as the Kindle.

BUT, if you are looking for an awesome computer to actually be productive, this isn't it. And the documentation that comes with it falls very short.

EG. The instructions tell you to set the clock before you do anything else. However, they do not include telling you where or how to find the clock and the settings. The same holds true for the next two settings, connecting the WiFi and Calibrating the Screen Sensors.

Setting the Time first isn't just important, it is critical, since the time is not preset. Since I had trouble setting it, I tried to set up the Kindle first (where I eventually found the manual for the Pandigital). However, it wouldn't accept the link to Amazon, either on the Kindle Reader OR the browser, since according to it, the security credentials weren't appropriate. It was later that I discovered that since the time was off by over a year, nothing would work security-wise on the internet. Things went smoother once I found out where and how to set the time and date.

However, even with this resetting, I have consistently been unable to set up the e-mail app to download e-mail. I receive an error message. I can access my e-mail through the browser, but it is a bit frustrating.

On the sensitivity level, I thought I had a serious problem with the touch, since even though I tapped using my fingernail tip, a pen tip, and other objects, the screen would not calibrate. I finally discovered that in this case, "touch" worked well, not tapping as instructed. I also switched to a stylus at this point, which improved my experience.

Compared to both the Sony Reader and the iPad, the touch is not sensitive at all when working with the apps. It is ok for reading, since the pages turn easily, but I rate it pretty low. I tried downloading several apps for android, and very few of them actually worked with the Pandigital. As it says in the instructions, "many second party apps will make the menu buttons disappear" (and they do), and you have to push the volume button to "force" them to display so that you can exit the app. Of course, when the app has designated the volume button for some other purpose, you have to force quit the android to get out of the app. So, not really a lot of fun.

I was very excited about having the SD card slot, since at only 1G internal memory, I knew I would need it for my music and photos. BUT, when I inserted my 8 GB SD card, the android not only didn't recognize that it had mounted, but also seems to have permanently locked it into the slot, and I can find nowhere in the directions on how to make it let go. (I've used SD cards in many items, and normally you push down and it springs out - this doesn't). So I not only am not able to use SD cards to load the info and store it, but it also ate the SD card that I had.

What it does well -
1) It downloads and reads Kindle Books (when you can connect to WiFi)
2) It surfs the internet
3) It stores photos (although at 1 GB, it doesn't store many).

What it doesn't do well -
1) Apps for Androids
2) Productivity, things like creating and actually working in documents
3) Respond to touch easily
4) Document how to do something - plan on spending lots of time setting it up
5) With only 1 GB internal memory, you do need an SD card to store even the most basic amount of music, books, and/or photos.
6) WiFi Connection is sporadic, even sitting in the same room with the router.

It is worth purchasing at this price for what works well. But don't purchase it thinking you will be able to do a lot with it. It is, in essence, a fancy Reader with some internet access. (I had trouble connecting at times sitting in the same room as the Router.)

(If anyone has figured out how to remove the SD card, please feel free to post under comments. I'm headed out of town for a week, so I will call customer service when I return and I will update the review if it turns out I'm doing something stupid or missing something obvious.)

OK, I found a friend who helped me to remove the card using a safety pin and prying it out. It was in backwards, and once I turned it around, it pops in and out. For those with the Pandigital, be VERY careful in inserting the card, since there is no indicator to show which direction it goes, and it is possible to insert the card incorrectly.

Today, Amazon issued an announcement for Kindles that actually cost less than this (now on sale), AND the Amazon Tablet that costs around $200. Given my experience with the Pandigital, I would wait for one of these and go with the newer technology. They do promise that the touch on the Kindle Fire will be very sensitive, and this assuredly isn't. So save your money for something that actually works well, even if it costs a bit more.

3.0 out of 5 stars It works, but it could be better. October 19, 2011
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The Pandigital Android 1GB 7-inch multimedia tablet is a simple tablet and e-reader that uses a customized version of Google's Android operating system. If you just want a basic tablet for reading ebooks using the pre-installed Kindle app or reading PDF books, the Pandigital works great. It's also easy to set this up for web browsing or checking your email.

The built-in SDHC card slot makes it simple to expand the storage capacity of the tablet with a 16GB or 32GB memory card.

My biggest complaint is that it's too difficult to install new Android apps on this device. The pre-loaded apps are fine if you only want to do basic stuff, but the main reason to buy an Android tablet is so you can install apps from the Android Marketplace. As it comes straight out of the box, you cannot simply visit the Google Android Marketplace and install apps. You have to use the pre-installed app store (which only has apps I've never heard of and apps that look like spyware or a scam) Some of the most popular Android apps (such as Netflix or SmugMug) can't be installed.

In short, if you want to use this tablet as a "serious" Android tablet then you will need to install a fresh (clean) version of the Android operating system so you can install apps from the app store. If you just want a low-cost tablet/e-reader then this will get the job done.
