5.0 out of 5 stars Some problems seem to persist and defy a remedy., March 19, 2011
I love this book.

Every american should read this book simply to compare then--life in America in 1857--and now--life in America in 2011.

The author talks about the poor, the unemployed, unions, slave labor, and free white male laborers, as well as farmers, plantation owners, and merchants, and manufacturers in the north, east, west, and south as each group was affected by the economic problems associated with the Panic of 1857. Food for thought in the current aftermath of the Panic of 2008, in modern times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Economic History of the Civil War yet written!, May 21, 2006
If you want to get to the scholarly bones of the origins of the civil war and move beyond the simplistic moral debates, this is the book for you. Simply a top rate book by one of America's top rate scholars. Read only if you are serious about understanding the historical roots of the war.
