Book Description
In this subject guide, psychologist Dr. Jerry Kennard provides a concise and informal introduction to panic attacks, panic disorder and the management of panic. The guide is for people who want something more than a leaflet or a webpage, but less than a formal textbook.
There was a time when the study of the human condition and mental health specifically was confined largely to students of psychology, medicine or nursing, or those involved in social care or health-related occupations. Today the message is finally filtering through that mental illness is extremely common and is not something to be feared or hidden away.
Dr. Jerry Kennard is an author, psychologist and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society. He is a former healthcare professional and academic who now writes regular blogs on a variety of mental health issues.
Was thrilled to find that Dr. Jerry Kennard has written another book in the mental health category. Those of you who have read and found helpful his Bipolar Disorder book may well have already pounced upon his new book Panic Attacks.
In Panic Attacks by Dr. Jerry Kennard once again the reader can look down the list of chapters and dip in and out of ones that are of special interest.
Once a person who experiences panic or anxiety episodes reads this book, they can then begin to understand what is happening to them and why it happens. Also what medication and cognitive therapy there is available. Armed with this knowledge they can then have hope of leading a less fraught life.
Likewise friends and family with a loved one with a panic or anxiety attack problem can learn about this condition and have empathy and understanding too.
Along the way we discover the difference between Panic and Anxiety and learn that brain activity is affected during an attack and which side of the brain has increased activity for each disorder. Before long, we the reader become totally fascinated and I for one read the book straight through. How I wish these little books were available when I was a student nurse.
This is the key, Dr Kennard with his wide knowledge, writes in such a clever way as to make each subject so interesting. Interest in turn leads us to better understanding. He is a truly gifted writer and I hope there are more of these little gems to follow.
Panic Attacks is an excellent book which is well organized and very informative. It covers panic attacks and agorophobia in great detail. The book is great for patients and psychiatrist to read and learn from. I give it 5 Stars. By Gregg L. Friedman MD, Psychiatrist, Hallandale Beach, FL
