Book Description

Pantaloon is a poodle with a sweet tooth. He adores cookies and yummy pastries. So when the Baker is looking for a helper, Pantaloon applies for the job.

“Oh, no, Pantaloon!” says the Baker. “You look to me as if you’d eat more than you’d bake.” But Pantaloon proves him wrong in this charming Golden classic, brilliantly reillustrated by Steven Salerno.

From the Hardcover edition.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2—This newly illustrated story (originally published by Golden Bks. in 1951) recounts the madcap efforts of a pastry-loving poodle to be hired at a local bakery. Pantaloon, zipping around the city on a shiny red bicycle and decked out in snazzy striped pants, answers a Help Wanted sign only to be rebuffed, even in clever disguise. But when Baker lands in bed, bruised and bumped from tripping over Pantaloon's misplaced bicycle, the remorseful pup swoops in to save the day by completing all the orders. Pantaloon is an overnight sensation with the customers, who clamor for his return. Baker pleads for Pantaloon to come back in letters on a giant cake in the store window, and they become "the two happiest bakers in the whole world." The final illustration, a coda to the text, bears a visual clue to Pantaloon's inevitable success. While the story line is slight and often contrived, the stylized, retro-looking full-color illustrations are snappy and appealing, and breathe new life into this classic for another generation. A worthy choice for storytime read-alouds.—Kathleen Finn, St. Francis Xavier School, Winooski, VT

5.0 out of 5 stars For Poodle lovers! January 21, 2000
By A Customer
Long, long time ago, when I was just a little girl, my sister and I would go visit our great aunt and in a special drawer she had wonderful books that she would read to us. Our favorite book was Pantaloon, a wonderful poodle who rode a bike and worked at a bakery. When my great aunt passed away we searched her house high and low for our favorite book, but it had long ago been lost. I have searched for the book for years, so I could share it with the children in my life. Now I have found it. I recomend this book to anyone who wants to cuddle up in a big chair on a raining day and read to a little one on their lap. What memories I have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pantaloon, you're back! April 30, 2000
When I was a child, my elder sister's copy of Pantaloon was passed on to me. Thirty years later I still had it, though the cover had long been torn off. Nevertheless, I read it to my daughters and they both delighted in it as much as I had. I never quite gave up hope in finding a pristine copy of it one day. It's timeless; simply lovely.

"Pantaloon" is a reissued Golden Books classic for children ages 2-5, much loved since its original incarnation in 1951, renewed in 1979 and updated for reissue 2010. "Pantaloon" re-emerges packed with all the fun and fabulous colorful paintings of French poodle Pantaloon on his shiny red bicycle, unlikely baker's assistant and prompt delivery dog. A whole new generation of young readers will learn to love the antics and unlikely successes and popularity of the fabulous Pantaloon. Just the image of Pantaloon in the Baker's shop rolling out dough and icing cakes with delicious pink frosting is enough to brighten up anyone's gray day. "Pantaloon" is surely a classic work about the power of optimism, positive thinking, and joy that overcomes adversity.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute classic March 26, 2001
By A Customer
Always on the lookout for books for my 18 month old daughter, I came across Pantaloon and was persuaded by the accompanying rave reviews to give it a try. I'm glad I did as the book immediately hooked her with its wonderful illustrations by Leonard Weisgard and its amusing story of a poodle who desperately wants to help out a reluctant baker. Pantaloon certainly deserves its rank amongst the pantheon of childhood classics and I have every confidence he will become an enduring favorite of my daughter's.

Pantaloon, a black poodle, was on his bicycle racing toward the bakery. He licked his chops and tooted a few musical notes on his horn in anticipation of those "delicious baked-and iced things." Mmmmmm! Pantaloon just loved sweets. Baker, a big jolly man, was placing a "Help Wanted" sign in the window when Pantaloon was arriving. There was nothing better, except perhaps wanting to eat sweets, he could have wanted than to be a baker's helper. Baker would have none of it and quickly turned him away saying, "You look to me as if you'd eat more than you'd bake."

Pantaloon left the shop with his head down, but had an idea. Not long after he left a "very nice old lady in a big bonnet and a blue shawl" showed up at the bakery. She tippy toed on her red heels, swung her purse, and claimed to be a marvelous baker. Well, Baker soon figured out that disguise and Pantaloon was out the door. Next up was a haircut. Perhaps Baker could be fooled into letting him be a helper. On his way back, Baker accidentally tripped over Pantaloon's bicycle and injured himself. Who was going to do the baking? Was Baker ever going to let him be a helper after this fiasco?

This delightful, humorous tale about Pantaloon, a desperate wanna be baker, will simply charm the reader. I loved the determination of Pantaloon and could picture him wanting to help out the "Cake Boss." The nostalgic illustrations caught Pantaloons desire to be a helper, but also brought out the humor of the situation. The illustrations definitely have that 1950s Golden Book flair to them that will make the adult reader smile when they remember not only Pantaloon, but numerous other Golden Book characters. If you have a youngster who would appreciate a slightly zany, humorous dog, Pantaloon is the dog for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for Poodle Lovers December 2, 2004
I got the book on the recommendation of a friend and we just loved it! We giggled as we read it because we imagined our own standard poodle doing the crazy things that Pantaloon does. No wonder Pantaloon inspired so many people to get poodles.
