5.0 out of 5 stars A classic of world literature, March 27, 2007

This review is from: The Lord of the Panther-Skin (Unesco Collection of Representative Works : Series of Translations from the Literatures of the Union of Soviet Socialis) (Hardcover)

A largely overlooked nation and a largely overlooked culture Georgia is one of the most unique nations on earth. Not only does it have one of the oldest Christian cultures but add to that a heavy Iranian influence through conquest and its Azeri minority, a little Ottoman influence through Ajara province and Russias soviet influence and you have one of the richest cultural traditons around.

This book written by the national poet Rustaveli at the height of the Georgian empire this stands as a classic of world literature. Most probably influenced by Arab and Persian epics such as the stories of Antar, the Shahname of Firdowsi and Leyla and Majnun of Nizami this is a similar story of epic battles, kings, princes and princesses.

I book recomended for anyone with a love for world literature.
